Did I buy a fake Prince Cloud guitar?

Back in 2017, I almost bought a Schecter-built Cloud guitar in peach. Ultimately, I didn't, thinking there would be other runs. There weren't. I thought I was out of luck until a seller popped up on Reverb with several NOS (new old stock) peach Clouds. But were these listings too good to be true?

I have a feeling that your cloud might be a b stock guitar. Prince’s estate probably wouldn’t want Schecter to sell b stock officially so the factory probably kept them.

@@GetOffset⁠i would have totally tried to reach out to Schecter directly. Someone there might know the answer or may want to find out that this is going on (and may reward you heavily for being such a good detective lol). I mean, I see why you’re hesitating a little bit to believe that it’s legit, but I really think it’s also being sold direct from the factory with a seller they work with who acquired them. Aside from the possibility of being a B-stock or factory second, it could be that they’re making some coin on the side and hoping Schecter won’t find out. I actually think this second possibility is more likely the case if the seller had a significant number of units when it was an extremely limited run. Even if there were a few that didn’t make the cut, it would be a relatively low number. It’s a very common practice in the tech and audio industry in Asia to sell some units on the side, so why not the guitar industry? It’s usually not done too much on American websites, but since AliExpress is technically an Asian company . . . I dunno, if it were me, I’d reach out to Schecter with a link to your video and some more details. Even if one of your KZfaqr cohorts doesn’t have a direct contact, I think general customer service will connect you with the right person if you say you’re a KZfaqr with a major concern about a purchase. If that gets you nowhere, try reaching out to the estate. I mean, if you thought you purchased an expensive limited edition guitar and now anyone can get a legit copy direct from the factory without a serial, I’d be super mad. I’m pretty sure the estate would want to investigate further to uphold the integrity of the limited run. But I’d start with Schecter first.

I bought a total knock off on ebay for kicks. It needed the slots worked on and the pickups were expectedly pretty wonky but it was a gold experience I had to have and I was never gonna get within 17 days of a Rusan, or even a Schecter, so I went for it. Don't regret it, and it is a bit of an odd little guitar to play but what a private joy it is, I turn it up and let the housequake. By the way, called it on Get Offset years ago. Takes one to know one. 💜

The factory second theory seems the most likely to me. I would be shocked if it was a total fake but the lack of a serial number is a big red flag. I would be very curious to find out if there are examples of other Schecter models that have a similar story.

There have been really poor knockoffs…it was a huge problem. I know a guy who was in charge of the gear after he passed and I remember him telling me about it back in 2020. So good on you to check into it.

Edward's made a great Cloud Guitar, with 3 single coil pickups. I put in the DG20 EMG Pickups. Its also a bolt on neck so you can adjust it when needed.

I’ve got a replica MadCat that I love and have considered a cloud guitar… probably a white “Purple Rain” era or blue angel “Lovesexy” era… but like you mentioned, they can be pricey (especially if you get one from Dave Rusan himself, which would be my preference), they’re not ideal if you’re playing sitting down, and it would definitely feel a little odd playing it live unless it was a tribute… almost as awkward as playing Prince’s love symbol guitar. So, I settled on a small replica from Axe Heaven to display. 😉🤣

Hi. Yeah, I got the pun (22 positions ...😁)! I discover you literally on Mr. Nelson's 66th birthday, which is 5 days before my own. I probably would have at least one Prince-like guitar in my collection by now, but when I was younger (like 50 years) I decided to try to be individual unto myself. I don't do signature guitars to this day, but the reason changed; now they're just too expensive! These days, though, I'm learning to do setups and the like, so I may try out one of those fakes. If it isn't too bad, I can probably make it good. Great? Maybe not, but good. Know what I'd REALLY like to do, though? Imagine a Cloud with a Floyd Rose vibrato! FIERCE!

i own one of the chinese copies. the neck is like holding a log, but its 90% for display purposes. Its playable and sounds FINE, especially considering the low price.

my overall guess would be factory second, maybe sold internally to the employees in the factory, and then sold to a dealer. that, or the factory itself pushing the seconds out the back door to avoid licensing issues. many overseas clothing manufacturers do the same thing, make extra of the name brand product, but conveniently forget to label them and then a box “goes missing” and is sold on the grey market

Emily, I would not rule out contacting Schecter as there might be someone there who would like to help you find an answer, perhaps one of the guitar assembly techs. I think many of them are guitar players and hobbyists who would welcome a quest like yours. The battery, shielding, and maybe the tuners might be a clue to someone who actually built the guitars. My guess is that it is a B stock guitar. It really is a cool looking guitar and appears to be a quality build.

Prince's estate is known to be highly litigious after Prince died. Over dumbass issues like not letting Morris Day tour as Morris Day and the Time, so it'd make sense for schecter to be careful.

I'd like to just say big ups for buying a house in 2017. We bought ours around that time and we would not be able to afford it now with prices and interest rates the way they are. Also, cool guitar. My guess is made at the factory but not sanctioned by Schecter. Maybe they built more than they were contracted for or something like that.

Honestly, we lucked out on the house. It was originally listed as the wrong home type, which made it look overpriced. We were the first offer and they were motivated to sell.

You're a dyed-in-the-wool Prince freak, so legit or not, as long you didn't have to remortgage your house, I think it's just a deeply cool, unique thing to own/play or just display as tribute to one of the most legendary musicians of all-time. Enjoy!

It's got to be really frustrating to not know for sure if it's a replica/counterfeit or a legit factory second. An argument could be nade that, uf Schecter isn't supposed to sell the factory seconds it's basically the same as a fake. Especially without a serial number (that's assuming there would be a reason a legit guitar would not have a serial). It sounds good in any case. From the replies you've gotten the seller does seem to know more than he is willing to say... though an argument could be made that it comes iff that way because he is either a non English speaker or knows just enough to do transactions with people from English speaking countries.

The pot should read 250k **** Ouch, what did you offer them? It was listed for $1,980. I would think that is a decently built replica, but I can find nowhere in a 30 minute search that has a picture of the cavity showing the internals to compare a real/paisley park/original diamond schecter, etc. If it turns out to be a fake, I would replace those internals with better hardware, check the pickups to see if they are even reading the values that the guitar should put out...and then at least you will be happy with the sound.

@@GetOffset Oh I figured you came in right around 1400, but that's all good. Those tiny little pots really have me suspecting it isn't real because I don't know if Schecter would use those tiny little pots. Trust me though, if all you did was upgrade the pot(s) to a 500k for that EMG 81 and use some decent quality pots....it will sound much much better.

@@GetOffset The seller was pretty easy to find. Looks like they have one left. For the quality I don't think you overpaid, in fact you got an insane deal. It's almost definitely a factory second.

My best guess from what you have shared is that it is a "real" Schecter from the factory. But lack of serial no. It probably was a factory 2nd. No big deal. Still a fine guitar. Enjoy it.

I went through a similar journey last year but in the end was not able to find a proper Schecter (let alone a Rusan, of course) for a reasonable price. So instead I resolved to find the best Aliexpress clone. While the neck on the one I got is very similar to yours, with the love symbol inlays instead of spades and dots, these clones have a distinctly cheap feeling plastic nut and truss rod cover. I didn't see what yours look like in the video so I can't comment on that. Furthermore, the fret ends on mine do not actually reach all the way to the edge of the fretboard. Yours look in better shape. I ordered from a vendor whose photos showed the same electronics cavity shape as yours but the one I actually got had the other common shape. Go figure. All things considered, there are enough differences from ye typical Chinese clone to say that at the very least yours looks like something other than that.

This looks like a MIRAE guitar. They make a lot of copies including fake schecters out of korea. Most seem to have no logos. Plenty of them on ebay and reverb. They seem to have decent quality but theyre not schecters or factory seconds. Theyre just copies with subtle differences.

@@GetOffset ok so i went digging some more. like 2hrs of digging and reading lol I think its a legit schecter at this point. Mirae is a trading company in s korea where schecter diamond series are made so it would make sense. Also the original maker i believe owns the rights so maybe that has something to do with the no serial and i vaguely remember some kind of news and fuss about that back in the day. Schecter 2nds have a stamped 2 on the back of headstocks. It is weird though that schecter has no mention of it on their site. not even in their discontinued vault. But again it might be due to rights.
