I'm an MD (radiologist) and I see tons of people with back issues. The main problem in golf is swinging "too hard". Forced acceleration and deceleration in a rotation puts tons of stress on your spine. Stop trying to rip it every time - instead swing relaxed and easy. Not only does a forced swing hurt your back, but also your golf game. All the best and keep up that swing and tempo, looks great!

Hey Doc, what would be your instruction for someone with degenerative discs and sciatica? I have gotten a shot in my buttocks when I was 23, I am now 35 and dealing with some nerve issues. Do you think yoga or stretching would fix my issues or should I go to the Veterans Affairs for another shot? I have been stretching not everyday but most. Thanks Doc!

Thanks for the likes! Some things to look for (if some of you are interested): - Try to let the weight of the club initiate your upper body downswing. Don't try to forcefully accelerate the club right after the backswing with your shoulders or arms. Let the club stop (feels like a pause) on top of the backswing and let it fall down again - use that momentum to further accelerate. - Don't stop half way in your follow through. Complete it every time until the end to decelerate slowly and steadily, even (and especially) if your strike was bad! - Hit around 70% every time! You'll only lose around 10% of your distance (you'll be shocked how far you can still hit the ball with less effort). Your strikes will be better too. - Try to have a fluent rhythm in your swing. Relax your muscles in your setup position - Disconnection of lower and upper body is for pros. As an amateur with back pain - don't overdo this! Have fun and enjoy your game, stay safe!

Hey Matt, I’m a physical therapist and what I’d like to comment is that the golf swing is something that puts a whole lot of torque on your spine so making sure you have adequate mobility in your thoracic region is essential. The lumbar region is meant for flexion/extension where the thoracic spine is highly related to your swing because it’s meant to rotate. So I personally think t-spine mobility exercises in addition to lumbar stabilization/strengthening exercise will maximize your swing and minimize risk of further injury.

Absolutely! Can't wait to see what this does for Matt's game! I don't swing the club as well as Matt, but fixing my posture, getting more upright with less bend in my spine and my knees, I'm striking the ball better, tighter, and just as long if not longer with relative ease. More importantly, I don't feel strained after every shot!

Matt - fully understand how difficult it is for you to take a lot of time off. Besides the great info Grant shared and your making changes to try to ease the stress on your lower back, one of the biggest changes you can make is to park your ego and worry less about smashing irons and learn how you can hit more club and get the great results you are seeking. Have had back issues, including two necessary surgeries, over last 45 years. When I stopped trying to hit 9 irons, 165 yards and instead would take a 7 iron, my back issues eased. God bless Matt, this will be a lifetime journey.

Great ! I can so much relate to that. I had terrible strain on my back as well, due to hunched over posture together with butt out. My coach said no and did the same thing Grant did to you. I now have #1 gotten rid of my back issues, #2 much improved my tempo, #3 stopped hitting all out, but rather take one higher club, #4 relaxed in my mind. Bottom line: I took 8 shots off of my card. Amazing stuff (now breaking 85).

Matt, thanks a ton for this video-both to see how dedicated you are, and it is something that folks like myself need to see. I’ve had the same or very similar back issues. I can say that the 80-90% controlled output along with the right posture is the way to continue golfing with a lower back injury. Another thing that I’ve found, and I’m sure that you are doing as well, is to make sure and do a lot of stretching and strength training to strengthen your entire core. That has been the secret sauce for me as well. I used to carry all of my clubs at least 10-20 yards further, but with bad posture and a ton of stress on my lower lumbar region. Even with 3 herniated discs I am finally back to a comfortable swing that never gives me pain. The distances for all my clubs are creeping back to what they used to be as well. Anyway, thanks for all of the amazing content and keep at it brother, you’re one of my favorite people to watch in golf!

Moe Norman and the single plane swing puts very little stress on your back and if executed properly you won't lose a lot of distance and keep accuracy at a premium. Todd Graves and others are great places to start! Good luck in your recovery, Matt!
@rhull3939
@rhull3939 Жыл бұрын
Yes. Moe's swing was so simple and effective. He didn't have a ton of club head speed and look what he did. His driver was around 105mph. Pretty low. If more pros realized the simplicity of his swing and implemented it with around 115mph, their accuracy would skyrocket and still drive the ball over 300 yds with adequate distance with all the other clubs. It's amazing to me how complicated the golf swing has been made out to be in recent years. Absolutely crazy.

Matt I gotta be honest with you bud. I'm glad you hurt your back. Like I feel for you and all, but the new swing is a lot like mine because I have a lot of spine damage. Your lesson with Leadbetter helped me out a ton and I appreciate it. The best thing I can tell you from years of dealing with these issues is to make sure you keep every muscle from your neck down limber. Your muscles are essentially chained together through your body so when they tighten it adds compression to the spinal column as they contract. Legs, glutes, and lower/mid back are going to be the most important. It's not a solution by any means, but in the past 10 years I've found that this ounce of prevention prevents a lot more than a pound of pain. Hope this helps my brother. Be easy.

Hey Matt, wishing well in your recover, last year I had a very similar injury, pinched sciatica nerve and a bulged disk, literally had no range of movement in my left leg for weeks, also being only 21 at the time I knew I had to buckle down to get this fixed, a few things I can recommend with getting strength back in your back is light swimming (walking around in water helps as well but don't over do it), bike riding and light core workout 1-2 times a week (pilates, yoga etc) took a while to come back but I have had minimal soreness since doing that program. cant wait to see your progress!

This is so great to see. I have a condition called Scheuermann's Disease, its a type of kyphosis where my vertebra developed in a wedge shape instead of a block shape giving me a pretty severe permanent hunchback. I love golf and have been playing since I was a kid, I'm now 27, and every time I golf my back starts to give out around 14/15 holes. I'm about a 10 handicap and hit the ball pretty hard. Drives are usually around 170-175 ball speed, 300 or so carry. 7 Iron is around 180 yards. But I feel like I don't do a good enough job transferring that weight forward and keeping my spine stacked like you're saying in this video. Really really really helpful for me to see how to swing properly and take some of that stress off of my spine. Guess I gotta head to the range now and film myself swing, slow down and try and implement some of these changes. Thanks for the tips Grant! Matt, I hope you get better soon and back to 100%! Good luck out there my man.

Having had all the same surgeries as Tiger, I can say from experience that it's definitely a challenge to rebuild your swing and manage your head. With enough work and good energy though I have a swing that hurts me much less and in the end I really didn't sacrifice distance. I did lose yards at first but I've found more comfortable ways to generate the speed. Don't beat yourself up if it takes a bit to adjust! You got this!

At 55 I've just been diagnosed with neck problems in the C5-C7 region which have greatly impacted my golf season. It's scary to find out that any part of your spine is damaged, but from your story and reading the comments many people deal with it. For me, I'm working with PT and developing a stretching/strengthening program, I'm also very conscious of work ergonomics and how I use my body in day to day activities. I've also decided to not do range sessions any more, just go and enjoy playing with my wife, or my friends a few times a week. Best of luck on your recovery journey and thanks for sharing this video. Good luck with the new golf swing Matt. I'm 51 and have been playing golf since I was 15 years old and have back pain. The key for me to manage the pain over many years has been slowing down my swing. By doing so I have obviously lost a little distance however my accuracy has improved which for me has meant lower scores.

I’ve felt back pain in the same place after swinging my driver on the range before and this video helps so much. It’s unfortunate that you had to have this happen to help others out, but at least you can help people like me with preventing the same issue

I've always rooted for Matt, in all the good good vids. The last major I was on edge hoping to see him get the dub. Can't wait to see him competing again

I’ve been a cop for almost 10 years and the duty belt on my waist has caused back issues. I also got in a car accident on my honeymoon in Mexico and my L2 and L3 are basically fused together now. What I found for me was focusing on a solid stretching routine and warming up. Getting slightly longer clubs so I don’t have to lean over was a blessing too. I still can’t take a full swing but I’ve noticed slowing my swing down has made an improvement. Stretching my hip flexors and psoas muscle before the round have prevented further injury. Thanks for the video! Brought out some new ideas for me to try with my own swing.

Hey Matt, I commented on the last video (you liked it) about how we would love to see a rehab series. As a Med student interested in the spine. And someone invested in ur golf game curious if we can get some behind the scenes rehab too. See it all from stretching to strength building to rehab to doctors visits, maybe MRI’s/ X-rays, even recovery stuff maybe. Massages, rolling, icing etc. I assume that there will be tons of range sessions and maybe a new club fitting to fit the new swing too but just feel like this would be a super cool series

Coming at this from a different angle. I work at a mattress company and thinking about the training, experience and studies I've looked at, you should continue to sleep in zero gravity. Like you said, it takes the most amount of pressure off of your back and over time that should help a lot with making sure your back doesn't act up! Well wishes Matt!

This couldn’t have come at a better time. Been dealing with some chronic upper neck pain and tension headaches that I know are from just killing my self at the range hitting hundreds of balls with probably not ideal posture/mechanics. Will definitely work on this stuff. Keep it up Matt you the man!

Congrats on the progress. I respect how mentally tough you stayed during the GG major. You played great. I hear you guys talk about “first swing of the day” when you film content. Going straight to the first tee and going 100% with a driver isn’t great on the back. Keep up the good work!!

I've never had any proper issues with my back besides some minor soreness occasionally (which comes from mainly me sitting most of the day), but I'm going to implement this into my swing when I play again. I always had a naturally low "athletic stance", so I'm going to really take this video and try to stand a little taller and straighter than what I normally do. I hope even people without issues take something away from this and adjust to help prevent any injuries.

Great to see you back out there Matt, an extra 15 yards on a driver swing isn’t worth you giving up the game. 70% in middle of club face almost always goes as far as 100% mishit, stay disciplined, praying you’ll stay healthy

L4-L5 and L5-S1. Bulging disc here. The best workout i can tell you is a medicine ball and do forward and backward hip rotations along with side to side. It works the very fine muscles to stabalize your core and back

As an avid golfer that had back surgery at 15 and dealt with numerous back surgeries and problems related. I went to an inch longer irons and went to hitting a fade. Seemed to have helped with my longevity. Back pain is an everyday thing though never completely goes away.

I've had multiple back surgeries and I've been trying to rebuild my swing. But changing from a traditional swing to a single plane is hard. So inconsistent because I have a tendency to go back to old swing. Good luck Matt you can do this brother
