In this week’s video, we take our morning nature photography adventure to explore a trail along the Dan River in North Carolina. This was my first nature photography adventure of 2024 after taking a month off from photography. Expectations were low on this February morning, but with a little luck and taking the time to explore the forest floor, I found some hidden gems. Using my newly repaired Nikon Z6 and the 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses, I captured more intimate photos of the forest.
The Camera and Video Gear used in this week’s video include the following:
Nikon Z6 Mirrorless Camera w/ 24-70mm Lens: amzn.to/3oNoXOs
Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 lens: amzn.to/3IGna8K
Kase Wolverine Filters: amzn.to/3IGna8K
GoPro Hero9 Black: amzn.to/3iAsKOj
Google Pixel 7a: amzn.to/3Z9MX24

Hi, very nice video and photos!!! Yes, it always feels so nice to get back into the woods after a long lay-off!!! I agree with someone else about the length of your videos! Another 5 or 10 mins. would be nice. But not mandatory! Thank you for sharing your adventures!!!👍👍👍📷

It was tough to watch this on a day that is snowing heavily (here in Canada) 😅 I'm eager to get out. especially after seeing these beautiful shots! I really like the club moss and forest floor shots near the end. We have lots of those in the forest by my place but I haven't really figured out how to capture them yet. And I just had to do a double check that this was taken 2 months ago. We're not going to see weather like that for a few more weeks. It's somewhat weird for me to think of February as anything but freezing temperatures and piles of snow, but that's when I like to do some winter landscapes, maybe a snowshoe outing or two since the sun is high enough by then to take the edge off the cold.

Ugh...the dragging of winter! I lived in the mountains of Colorado for 15 years (at over 10k feet in elevation), so I am very very familiar with winter and how right now it's still winter! We specifically moved to North Carolina because we wanted a life with less snow! 😂 Hopefully, spring will makes its way to you in Canada soon! Have a fantastic day! 😀📸

7:49 in, “borough?” No. “Boro?” No. “Burl?” Yes. “A dome-shaped growth on the trunk of a tree.” 😎 Have you ever done any focus stacking? I’m still learning that technique myself. I’m so ready to get outside with my camera again too! I’m not a cold weather/yucky weather photographer! Enjoyed your vlog. 👍🏻💜👍🏻

Sometimes my words don't get enunciated very well, but yes burl. My habit of talking fast probably doesn't help! 🤷🏼‍♀️ I do focus stacking on occasion. Sometimes I do it manually and sometimes I will use the camera focus stacking setting. What's funny, is sometimes I think about how I could have focused stacked an image while I'm editing. There were a couple of the Clubmoss and fungi photos that I thought, I could have focused stacked that, but didn't. As an fyi....if I do ever focus stack or combine more than one photo to make an image, I always say how many photos were combined or stacked to create it when I share my camera settings. Hopefully, the weather will get better in your area soon! I know I am looking forward to spring flowers...daffodils will start blooming around the end of this month! Have a fantastic day! 😀📸

@@AcaciaFikeNelson My enunciation can be quite unintelligible at times. I have a rather thick south-central Kentucky accent and have been asked many times "where are you from?" Although I've lived here in western PA since 1988 I havern't lost my southern accent. Sometimes I even spell that way. (Droppin(g) the "g" from words endin(g) in "ing.") I have a confession to make regarding focus stacking: I was in a small woodlot near our house and decided to focus stack an image with an interesting tree as the main subject, but I wanted the foreground and everything leading up to the tree to be in focus. I know how to do it manually, as my Canon EOS R doesn't have the auto focus stack feature. But get this, instead of moving the focus point in camera, I physically moved the camera, placing the focus point on each area! Needless to say the image was completely unuseable and looked horrible! 😂😂😂

@@AcaciaFikeNelson Indeed we do. I remember my first successful focus stack, of an old stump in the back yard. I was amazed, it was one of those "AH HA!" moments.

@@TC_Conner I love those Ah-Ha moments. I remember the first time I took a photograph of a waterfall and smoothed the water out with a slow shutter speed, I am pretty sure I did fist pump when I finally understood HOW to do it! 😀

Thank you Peter! I do love the way that photo came out. 😀 I would really like to see that area of the river when it's lower because I think there are additional rocks and color patterns present. So I definitely plan to head back again later on in the year. Thanks again for watching and commenting! Have a fantastic week! 😀📸

Thank you David! It was so nice to get back outside! The green fungi on the log were so cool. With the way the sun was breaking through the tree's branches, it made me think of the way the sun breaks through the surface of the ocean and you get that ripple effect. Like I could have been looking at a coral reef or something. Looking forward to getting back out there again soon! 😀📸

Thank you for your comment and support! I appreciate it. The leaf balls were such an interesting find. The fact that those ones in the trees were at least 10 feet from the ground tells you just how high the water level rose during the recent flash floods. 😬

@@robertdavis1255 Very nice! I loved my D7000 and had that as my backup before my Dad bought it from me because he wanted a little upgrade. So....I am currently down to just the Z6. Hopefully, I will add a second camera in the next year or so, but will most likely buy a used one. Save some money. 📸😉

I use a GoPro HERO9 Black for most of my videos (shooting at 4k and 30 frames per second). I will occasionally incorporate b-roll from my Google Pixel 7a and my Nikon Z6. Both at 4k and 30 frames per second. The settings on the Z6 are typically 1/60 second and I typically use my 24-70mm f/4 lens.
