In this episode of HUNTR Podcast, we bring on special guest Joel Burham of Whitetail Fit to talk deer with us. We often discuss the similarities between fitness and hunting and how they go hand in hand. Joel is the perfect example of that as he's created an entire brand around that lifestyle with his company Whitetail Fit. Not only does being physically fit offer a better hunting experience, but training your mind to have discipline and consistent work ethic is a big part of it too. We hope you guys enjoy this podcast as we get to know Joel and talk deer with him. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

Killed a lot of deer with my High Country. They put out the fastest bow at the time until Darton came out with the lightning. Fun fact, High Country had one if the first carbon bows that came out in the mid 90’s

68 lift year round, start rucking in February for elk season in sept. All this 80 lb talk you will pay for later in life I guarantee it. I shoot 55 lbs with cut on contact broad heads and can kill anything in North America. I’m sitting in my trailer in Nebraska ( from Missouri)working on tree stands on 5 farms as I write this. I solo hunt in Colorado wilderness I hope well into my 70s. Cardio is the key in the mountains, the older you get the more intense workouts is the key. Great podcast lots of great info but you should tell people to pull what you can comfortably and leave your EGO at home. 🏹🏔️⛺️🌲

1:12:33 Standard weight for crossbow bolts (i happen to be looking into buying some custom bolts right now, i want a 475gr setup) is 400-460grains. And a heavy bolt will be anything over 470 grains up to 700grains. Light weight is 350grains to 399grains Im your resident crossbow guy. I got a 428lbs bear(22 1/8in score) in upstate pa 4 years ago. It turned to face me as i was pulling the trigger in my crossbow, hit in the side of the jaw (his right said) carried on through the neck and lodged the muzzy fixed blade broadhead into his 2nd vertebrae. The shot was absolutely not what intended. But thanks to the fixed blade broadhead, and using a 425 grain set up, the bear bleed like a stuck pig for 500ish yards and i got him

6:51 about covid, yes theres a summer spike in cases right now, the reason its no longer an issue and people dont talk about it, is because we have good anti virals and good emergency treatments for it. Its no longer a pressure on the health care system. I got it this past fall right at the start of the rut, laid me up with bad flu symptoms for a week, and lost my sense of smell totally for three weeks and didnt get it fully back for a month and a half

To your point on bow shops, there are very few that really know what they’re doing. I’ve had some bad experiences in the area that I live in Alabama. Everyone says the last guy didn’t know what he was doing. Often times it’s a young tech making $12/hr.

Curious what setbacks you think Mathews lift has? It is a more aggressive cam. I will agree but I love mine. As far as accuracy and speed goes, best I’ve shot in a while on a 29.5 ata. Honestly want to know or what you’ve heard. Seems Mathews has sold more lifts than they have when they dropped the switchback.

Crossbows (ravins) are so deadly it’s not even funny. I was injured and had to shoot my ravin 2 years ago and dropped 4 does and the 5th one went 20 yards. Between 15-40 yard shots. Hell doe number 6 was with a muzzleloader and it went 150 yards haha

I have one more short more question. Do ether of you play pickleball to stay in shape. Its estimated 35 million Americans play pickleball. Its the fastest growing sport and by 2030 it will up to 40 million players and thats just in America.

60# 340 ibo bow 400 grain arrow 280 ish fps. Rage hypodermic Will blow through mature bucks out to 50 yards if they're broadside with proper shot placement. Fast and flat like a coyote rifle. Shot placement trumps all. Heavy arrows just kill trajectory. Deer aren't lost because people aren't shooting enough poundage. Deer are lost because shots are rushed, the pin isn't settled and the shot is punched off. Excessive poundage leads to more of this sloppy shooting. I think most people would be really surprised about what a truly tuned bow with a truly straight flying arrow will do for penetration. I shot Rocket Hammerheads for year until I realized they weren't opening upon entry which just sucks up energy and kills penetration. A bare shaft tune imo is the key for accuracy and penetration.
@chuck8586

The point of a heavier arrow isnt the perfect shot placement. Its to correct for bad shot placement/only getting a marginal shot. And they work fantastically for that. On a perfect shot they’re simply just as lethal
@natemihlbachler3511
@natemihlbachler3511 24 күн бұрын
@@chuck8586 however a heavy arrow requires knowing the yardage more precisely and a lighter faster arrow gives the deer less time to react. Hitting the dreaded " back a little" really isn't any better with a heavy arrow. Flat shooting makes for less error imo.

@@natemihlbachler3511 heavier wont hurt accuracy much at all out to 30. After that, just practice, it’ll still be consistent
