The efficiency difference is an interesting find in the JP8’s. I’ve never wanted to mess with strapping amps together, but this is good info for the folks looking to do something like this.

I think it was a gain matching issue internally with the amps. That would waste a ton of power because of the voltage/output impedance mismatch on each hot terminal. It should have been the same at 2x the load impedance as one amp

I reconed some subs for a local guy around Christmas time. They're d1.5 ohm coils. He had a single jp8 originally and now 2 strapped. He's running the amps strapped at 1.5 ohm(series parallel) and they've been solid. Very good power for the money, and reliable. Great video man! 👍

7-8 years ago, I had two Crescendo amplifiers strapped. The slave failed, and when sent in for repair, I was told that strapping was harder on the input section, as that was what had to be repaired. Once I got it back, I used it as the master, and several months later, the other amp failed. Sent it to another repair person, as the other was backed up. Same issue with that amp, input section. That person said the same. I don't know how true I is, so I will ask you..I follow your repair channel.

@@Chuck_Sanders I advise that both amplifier output sections be replaced if there is an output or sub failure in a strapped installation. Some designs will hold up better than others. If a customer only sends one in I will let them know that the other may have been damaged and to be prepared for a repair bill on it.

@@ellensburgamplifier I'm not sure if the output section had damage, I was advised the input portion had been damaged. It was curiosity as to what may have caused that, and why 2 different individuals would advise that strapping was harder on the input. I'm just wondering if it was board specific, I haven't really strapped any since, and just gain match. Idk why, just made me leary I guess. Any other possible reasons why that may have happened? Thanks for responding

Actually, you could strap any two matching half bridge amps even if they don't have a strapping feature as long as the settings are pretty well matched and you wave a way to invert the phase of the input signal to one of them. If they have a phase inversion switch that would work perfectly; just set one to 0 and the other to 180 then wire them the way you illustrated. Or if the head unit or line driver has a phase inversion feature that only affects one output. The main advantage of strapping imo is the load seeing double the voltage, so you can get up to 4x the power into a given impedance than one of the amps could do into it individually (EG you're in an impedance crunch and can't wire the load low enough to get the most out of the amps individually, strap them instead). Even further you hypothetically could strap two different half bridge amps together depending on how they're grounded internally and how the settings/crossover phase distortion matches up on them Also amazing stuff as always Big D can't wait for the next one!!

So I'm going to strap my amps the right way today they have the feature of strapping and have a slave and master switch also have a phase switch which one should be 0 and 180 master phase zero slave 180 on phase or since they are strappable it is not needed?
@darrylpioch2055
@darrylpioch2055 9 ай бұрын
The amp in slave should automatically bypass all its settings and the settings on the master amp will control everything. And of course beware of the speaker terminals XD.. what was once a minor shock touching the leads when the amps were cranked may now be something seriously painful haha@@johnoates3326

I have one of these amps running at 1 ohm powering 2 JL Audio 12TW3-04 subs in my Tundra along with 2 of the JP84 amps powering the rest of my system and I am quite pleased with them. Price has done a good job with these amps. My system is designed to deliver the best sound quality it can and these amps are doing a great job. I was totally unaware of these amps before I saw them being tested on the dyno here on your channel. So thanks for that.

Most interesting video because I stopped customizing OP's auto sounds after 30 years @ the turn of the century, when seperate amps were for splitting Bass, Mid and Highs. My focus had turned to building computers and being in the country all we had were phone lines for internet with modems topping out at 56K. I had up to 4 phones and could STRAP each with modem together which would increase the internet speed up to 4 times...

@@yeahitskimmel Yep as long as each line has a modem and you have an ISP. I had 2 lines that ran to the old farm house and when I built a new house beside it I put in 4 lines. never ended having to use more than 3 because we soon got satellite/cable. Today with high speed/DSL strapping is possible... it's called bridging...also because internet is much faster today there is "split tunneling" where, for example, certain programs and/or Puters can go thru a VPN while others won't.

@@411LED Shotgunning, as it was called by DIAMOND brand. You could also strap a 56k modem with a cell phone. Back in those days,, the software involved would split the file, say 2/3 of the file was handled by your 56K and the last 1/3 was downloaded over cell phone, at the same time. That was on Sprint, before EVDO 3G/WiMax/4G LTE, thus the speeds were in the 13-30K range realistically. As wireless goes, of course, the speed would vary wildly and thus the portion of the file handled by cell phone would always end up taking longer. Basically, a complete disappointment, but hey, it Worked!

Many years back in the 1990's I was getting into the extra sound in the car system but did not want o spend much, but still wanted good as I could. So I bought the Radio Shack (Realistic) 120 watt 60X2 subwoofer amp. Seeing they could be bridged stereo to one mono channel with the built in switch and wiring instructions and I had a dual voice coil subwoofer in a tube I bought a second one. Found out a few months later they were discontinued and marked down greatly, and made a deal and bought two of the 160 watt amps that looked similar, but without the subwoofer filters.. Some years back I was experimenting with these and wondered if it was possible to bridge the 160 watt even though it was never meant to be. These had built in high level input connections ( meant for the 1960-1980's cars. ) so I just connected the output like the 120 watt amp had said for bridged operation and on the input side I wired in one channel correct positive to positive, and the other channel I found out works if done the opposite way on that channel. Thus it was bridged. They did apparently share a common internal connection like the other amp, but I never traced or looked at the circuit closely to see if I was wright, but a general look inside of the amp cover. I never tried this long term, but the principle should work but obviously bridged always means the bottom ohm load will have to be raised to twice that or the amp will overload. I would suspect even a 1 or 2 ohm resistor linking a second amp could also be functional on a none approved matched amp set, and the input swapped on one as well.

Just picked up a jp23v1.5 in black about 3 weeks ago for 249.00 and that a steal folks ....this amp puts in work ....if you have the electrical to support it .....that being said I replaced a skar rp1500.1....and it was a very good amp ad well but I run an American bass xr12 d2 ...and even though either amp would probably support 2 of these 12s I went ahead and picked up the jp23v1.5 because you can strap/ link it to another jp23v1.5. .....so when the budget allows for another xr12 d2 if I want more power I have that option ....and I am really impressed with the jp clip light is nice to have as well as temperature and voltage meter ....have played it at hight volume for extended periods of time and a out 118 is as warm as it has got .....not sure I have even had the fan to kick on yet .....glad see this vlog so i know around the power I would get if I do get another one and link/strap it ....big thumbs up big d .. .and hey that's my nickname as well

I can honestly say in 15+ years I've never actually met somebody running strapped amps in a non-competitive system. Maybe bc most ppl have subs/amps already RMS matched so when they want to go bigger it's likely they'll need another sub that can be run independently. The one benefit of strapping that can't always be achieved with more money instead is cutting down on your X dimension in exchange for greater Y if you're limited on space for length

What I learned from wattage on your dyno? When test your amplifiers at 4 ohms 2 ohms and 1 ohm That's straight power the amplifiers are recieveing? But when you put a subwoofer in a enclosure the impedance is going to rise how high anywhere from. 5ohms to maybe 1.5 ohms so the amplifier is not going to perform better than your dyno and uncertified is a danger zone for any amplifier clipping means voltage drop on the electric system so certified would be anyone's best route ?Just saying but overall I would like to commend you for your efforts and hard work you been showing us over the years? They did not provide "Whack Math" as you call it. The math is absolutely correct. At 1:20 they show 650 watts at 2 ohms at 14.4 volts, that would be 36.055 volts at the outputs. Formula for wattage 36.055volts x 36.055volts /2-Ohms=649.98 watts (650 watts). Once you "Strap" the amps you now have 72.11 Volts at the output of the 2 "Strapped" amps. 72.11 x 72.11 /2 Ohms = 2599 watts... Otherwise known as 2467 watts @ 13.79 Volts just as You showed us with your dyno test. Again back at 1:20 they show 2300 watts at 2 Ohms @ 14.4 volts. That's the part you call "whack math" but no sir, that math is absolutely correct and you demonstrated it. They show 2300 watts into 2 ohms strapped instead of 2599... why? Maybe their power supplies aren't strong enough to push against each other when strapped, maybe other reasons, the world may never know. Will you publish this post? I hope you realize your mistake, surely you know ohms law and the way to calculate wattage by now. Have a Nice Day

Damn. I’ve been out of the loop too long. My last system was 6 Memphis 12”s and three 1000d’s and that sounded nuts in 2012. I didn’t have all that fancy strapping of 5000watts I had 3500 over all at max. Probably didn’t use all of it at all Kid at my job is running 3 18”s at 3000 watts a piece basically. And I started looking into all this new fancy stuff.

How’s it getting more power? How’s the efficiency getting worse.. 2xD’s make an AB..? Is this normal for all brand amps strapped? Great video, this isn’t newbie information

It's technically not. His 2 amps dyno higher than the rated rms. Say 2 x 1000w rms rated amps dyno at 1100w and 1250w individually. The strapped result should dyno around 2350 watts

My qusstion is would u get the same outcome if u perfectly gain matched your 2 monoblocks and wired one amp on each voicecoil on a single subwwofer build? So is strapping the same outcome should be right? 2 amps to 1 big amp or 1 amp per voicecoil power would still be the same outcome coorrect?

My mono Amps are not linkable but the way i run them i dont need too, i have two Pioneer GM-D9601 amps running at 2 ohms driving two 4ohm SVC subs each. i would probably be better off getting a more powerful single amp, it cant be the most efficient running two separate amps. I do only have one remote for both amps however, i bought a dual output potentiometer of the same value to replace original and put it in the housing and then added a second socket to it to connect the second amp.

Hey big D, I've been watching your show for awhile I have a question for you? My Partners came over, one had their bass Subs at 8ohms 2000watt rms, the other partner was at 1ohm 2000 watt rms both had the same amp company but obviously the eighth ohm app was rated at more power ( but it doesn't matter because they both played their music at 2000 Watts) , The 8ohm system sound way better it was clean crisp punching Bass not to mention he played his music all day literally with no smell of dual coils heating up, no nothing🤷‍♂️ My one-ohm guy could only play his music for maybe 30 -1hour straight without it having that burnt up smell with the amps heating up to the touch, it didnt have that clean crisp bass punch it sounded muddy compared to the 8ohm🤷‍♂️. I would love to see you do a test like this comparing sound quality with different ohms ....✌❤ Big D

How does setting clipping work? Do you set the master than slave or does the master control clipping for both? Does it matter where settings are on the slave or are they all overridden anyways?

Strapping amps can cause phase issues occasionally. Best to have a 2 channel oscilloscope if you're going to strap your amps.
@envisionelectronics
@envisionelectronics Жыл бұрын
If fed from the same signal, they cannot have phase issues. You can have different gain on each amp and maybe that’s what you’re actually saying.
@DibeezyTheGifted

@@envisionelectronics I suggest you check out Barevids gain matching video and you'll see what I mean. If you've ever had a two-channel oscilloscope on some strap damps yourself in person you would also know what I'm saying. Phase can and will be off.

That's not what he's saying. He's saying if a single amp dynos at 1000 watts, when strapped you won't get any additional wattage out of that amp. If the other amp dynos at 1050 watts your total should be 2050 watts and no higher. He saying you shouldn't get a result of 2500 watts just because he strapped them.
@johndough111

His amps dynod at over rated rms. Say 2 1000w rms amps dyno at 1100w and 1250w. The strapped result will dyno at 2350 watts.
@ryanmckee3102
@ryanmckee3102 Жыл бұрын
You won't get more than double what your worst performing amp dynos. You won't get the extra power from your better amp because the outputs are synced. Each runs half the sine wave. You have to run your weaker amp as master, so there will be no chance to clip the other side of the sine wave.
@PoXFreak
@PoXFreak Жыл бұрын
@@johndough111 first of all, if both amps are the same, they *should* do around the same power. No one should EVER use 2 different brand amps with different ratings in a strapped scenario, even the same brand.
@Chuck_Sanders
@Chuck_Sanders Жыл бұрын
@@PoXFreak his comment didn't say that. He was referring to how one amp, could be stronger than another, and you'll never get more output, then both combined. It wasn't in correlation to being different boards or brands. He just worded it a bit differently

This is kind of a random question but while you were talking about efficiency it made me think of something. would an amp be more efficient being driven at a lower ohm rating but at a lower power rating. for example lets say an amp is good down to 1 ohm and makes 1000 watts, and 500 watts at 2 ohms but you only need that 500 watts would it be smarter to get a sub ran down to 1 ohm and just have the gain turned down or just get the sub ran at 2 ohms with the gain turned to the rated rms power?
