The backlog can be brutal, and many of us are left asking 'how do we get through it?' - Our backlogs can build up for multiple different reasons, and a lot of the time the best method for making progress through it is to just make yourself play a load of games in your library. Maybe scheduling a time to play a certain game works for you, maybe spontaneity is key, or maybe just making peace with having a backlog for a while is the way to go.

YESS! Honestly, this video is something that perfectly helps answers my mental debate of "I swear I'm gonna play X game soon, I just wanna play this game for right now." I have bought a bunch of games using xbox gamepass (that has unfortunately expired), and there's also a ton of cool games that my dad bought for me on his PC and other consoles that we have that I find cool yet never play them all that much even with free time (partly because I'm more of an Xbox guy). Long story short, This is a great video on why backlogs happen in gaming (especially in my case), and I'll perhaps even try to organize my backlogged games on my xbox once ik how to do that. Have a good one man.

I for one am thrilled to have a backlog the size of mine. It means I have so many exciting experiences awaiting me, completely separate from what the industry is currently releasing. The day I clear my backlog will be a bittersweet one, for sure.

This is definitely the up side to having a backlog, that sort of comfort in knowing you have a load of great games for the future!

I did a recent check of games that I'd say are in my backlog or otherwise need to complete, and thanks to a number of bundles (most notably the itch ukraine bundle), that list is somewhere in the 900s. From small indie projects that in theory I could beat in a day, to big AA or AAA projects like RE7/8, Disco Elysium, DOS2, etc. And I keep doing things like start practising speedruns of Celeste, rather than making progress on it. My plan is to only die once I've completed it. This should make me functionally immortal.

The year is 2340, TokenOracle has now made 12% progress through their backlog. Bundles are a fantastic way to get insanely huge backlogs of games though, and when they're supporting good causes it makes them even better :3

I need to stop buying games I know I won't enjoy but still buy because everybody else loves, and sit back to look at what I enjoy and what I don't. I bought Elden Ring fully knowing I don't like soulslikes, but EVERBODY was telling me to get it. I have so many games in my Steam library that I need to play, but everytime I start them I realise why I haven't played them. The big picture is I should stop letting the internet dictate what I play, and play what I like. Games are supposed to be fun, and just because the Godfather is a "masterpiece" doesn't mean it's an easy watch. Maybe that analogy sucks, but this video really put me into check lol. Thanks KZfaq recommended.

I think you're right, and I like the analogy! Even if a game widely seen as one of the best ever made, it doesn't mean you're going to enjoy it, and so sticking to games that you have more of an interest in (and will have more fun playing) is absolutely the right move!

Really agree with you on "you don't need to finish the game to fully enjoy it" I have great time playing sea of stars with how beautiful the pixel art and enjoyable soundtrack, but stopped midway through and play new game because I have enough of the game and playing it more doesn't make love the game more.

I always like having a bit of backlog because you always have something new to play if you have the desire! 😁

I like having a fair few games ready to play, my issue is that the list seems to grow much faster than I can get through them! 😅

i think an issue i have with my backlog is finding people to play with as i have a good mix of singleplayer and multiplayer games i wanna try but the issue is finding a group to play with as my mood with games swings a lot between multiplayer days and singleplayer days which can be difficult to work around

I feel that - plus many friends are also into entirely different games from one another!

Loved the video! Your “rules” for getting through the backlog is pretty much what I’ve been doing, just committing to only playing backlog games and not sticking with anything that’s not enjoyable as well as leveraging how long to beat! Though I agree the backlog is imposing, especially when picking what’s next so I’ve just been crowd sourcing suggestions from comments so I don’t have to choose haha!

Thank you!! Crowd sourcing suggestions is such a cool and interesting method for getting through it, I guess it must also take out a little bit of that ‘choice paralysis’ as well!

I actually have to backlogs: The Backlog (Games I have to finish) and The Graveyard (A pitiable hellscape of disappointment and misery) and somehow that makes me less stressed about the whole thing.

Hahaha, I too have some games that are currently rotting in the graveyard! Maybe someday I will manage to resurrect them.

What a nice and relatable video! There are a lot of games in my library that I'm sure are really good, but I just can't bring myself to play them. The worst part is that I had a habbit of starting a game, almost finishing it, getting to a really hard or boring part that I reeealy didn't wanna do, start a new game, repeat. This habbit was really bad so I had to make a rule not to start new games until i finished old ones. This rule does not work, I still have to finish sabnautica and cave story (and a ton of other games that I just gave up on) but instead I bought Eastward and now playing it. I guess getting fully obsessed with some good game is just not what I need right now sinse I'm almost always mentally drained. Something not insainly hard (I'm looking at you good ending of cave story) and cozy with a good plot is all what concerns me right now, one day I think I'm going to go back and finish all other games, just not today, and that's fine with me But I really don't care about like 70 games in my library that I haven't even started playing. I'll get to them one day! It's good to know I have good games ready to play at all times

Thank you! I totally understand what you mean, I have a few games that I got pretty far into but ended up dropping for one reason or another before finishing them. Eastward is actually on my backlog right now, and its one of those games that I think I'm waiting for the right time to play instead of actually just booting it up and trying it (I'm hoping its one of the next games I try out, though!)

great video! im probably just repeating this video lol but i personally have 4 types of games that i choose from depending on my mood : - comfort competitive games - comfort chill games - new low commitment game - new high commitment game and applying what u said like not worrying about dropping a game if u dont enjoy it. i also have a spreadsheet to mark every game i played so i can remember which one i dropped because i didn't like it or because im not in mood/bad timing. i think there's a website to organise your backlogs, surprised u didnt mention it. im too invested in my personal spreadsheet tho because im a nerd 🤓

Thank you! That is a really good way of organising all of your games. I honestly probably should look at using some sort of backlog site, atm I just have my steam library to look through and some physical games on a shelf - but could be a great idea to start using a system like that!

One problem for me is it's easier and more cozy in a way to watch other people play games. It's not just a gaming experience then but a parasocial one

I’ve got like halfway through Alan Wake and I really enjoy it and want to go back to it I just struggle with single player games my favourite type of game is co-op and most of the good ones I’ve finished some multiple times. I usually end up playing one of the two multiplayer games that I actually enjoy instead:/
