Perhaps the title of this video should be changed. Not trying to hate but there isn't much good advice in terms of "getting your start". Just a bunch of DP's talking about broad concepts of cinematography as a whole (composition, lighting, failure). And the only fresh DP who got his start recently in this video is Bradford Young who frankly said nothing of value or relevance. All the other DP's got their start before the digital revolution and don't have the same perspective as someone starting out now. Just my two cents. Nothing inherently wrong with this video but when I see people commenting how informative and helpful it was I wonder if we even watched the same thing. Much love, but I'll still call things out when they need to be.

Brendan Grant Yeah its really odd. The closest hints of these guys talking about where they started sounds like they just kept taking on projects that were basically handed to them and did them only to get work. Its really odd. Compare this to now where there is no semblance of that, unless you're an actor.

What the hell are you guys talking about? All of the featured DP's are discussing their early career; how they were moved and motivated to become DP's, what were the fundamental lessons along the way and how they learned them, how they grew into the job and techniques required, and generally how they gained skill and wisdom to do this job at the highest level. What were you expecting, the phone numbers of agents? How to do 3-point lighting? And Bradford Young said nothing of value or relevance by explaining where he got his sense of form and composition from? How on-the-nose literal does advice have to be to inspire you? And the "digital revolution" hasn't changed 1) lighting, composition, the need for a unique perspective 2) storytelling fundamentals 3) the dynamics of working on a movie set. Besides, some of those old guys (Rodney Charters for instance) know more about digital acquisition then most people on the planet - though it's totally beside the point of this video. If you want a guide on how to "break-in" to the industry, well, there is none - everyone breaks in differently, gets noticed in a different way for a different thing. True 40 years ago, and true now.

Film Riot, if I’m being completely honest.. you guys make really cool videos and effects but in your tutorials you tend to move very fast while explaining multiple things without showing exactly what to do. I would appreciate if you could make one video where it is a step by step tutorial very carefully on putting together the ENTIRE effect and inputting it.. even if it makes a long video it really helps me out and other people in the same situation as me. Thanks!

Thanks for the video. I'm just confused how the same guy who worked on the great looking movie Arrival also worked on Solo which looked like crap. Half the scenes were underexposed and the focus point (usually characters' faces) were not even visible. It definitely did not feel like the same people worked on these two movies.
@MystikalScopeProductions
@MystikalScopeProductions 6 жыл бұрын
Daniel Draghici mind you the film had to go through huge 2nd and 3rd act reshoots in the month and some change Ron Howard stepped in. Most of Solo was already shot and put together when Lord and Miller were handling it. Young most likely had to shift and scrap what was shot before and redo some of t and you can tell. That’s why we didn’t see a teaser or anything until after Howard stepped in

Good stuff, but why are none of them American? One thing I've noticed is the flat lighting a lot of the new people are doing because of all the lighting Banks. I think it's a little sad because we are missing some of the molding that used to happen, now everything flat and boring. Of course I'm talking about independent stuff mostly where they are lighting for HD.

How to deal with Time Management and conflicting schedules with actors and getting the actors to give their best performance and how you deal with the pain aching scrutiny of audio?
@Brendan-Grant
@Brendan-Grant 6 жыл бұрын
We live in an age where film equipment is so cheap and advanced, there's virtually nothing you can't do for $1000 or less. Aerial drone photography? No problem. Smooth dynamic long takes? no problem. Capturing proper exposure in the middle of the night? no problem. The things we can do nowadays were things filmmakers only dreamed of doing 10 years ago.
@Brendan-Grant
@Brendan-Grant 6 жыл бұрын
The way you deal with conflicting schedules is with money, or being very good friends with actors to the point where they will drop everything to work with you. Most filmmakers would agree, nice audio is more important than the video itself- give it more attention instead of making it an afterthought.

This is the first film riot video I want to dislike.... and I’ve been watching film riot since 2011... please spend the time to do your channel and Cooke optics channel justice and edit the audio, color correct the shots and minimize the distractions of the story you’re conveying. I’m a subscriber to both channels and this video does a disservice to both channels.

Yeah, but in the 21 century, cinematography slowly goes away. Everything gets green screens so you have no idea what you film and how to do it. Cinematography slowly goes away from cameras and into 3D software.
@MystikalScopeProductions
