The dream of the Pan African Village, a rural settlement for returning diaspora in Ghana's Cape Coast, has become a source of bitterness.
This land is located in Asebu Ghana where 5000 acres of land was given away to the diaspora for the registration price of $1000 per plot.

Africa is a continent and the majority of the land is not inhabited by anyone. But not surprising as soon as the African diaspora comes home to invest and settle in Ghana by invitation there is a problem with people coming home and receiving land whether offered by the local village chief. Where is the outrage for the Chinese, Lebanese Europeans (white) or Indians stealing gold bringing in trucks and digging devices right in their faces in the village being allowed to cart away natural resources while the local village people work for them for peanuts or less. Make it make sense???

And these are the same people who let Arabs bully them into a whole religion. Then look down on their former slaves for not being “African” enough meanwhile their progeny is more monied & relevant than they ever were😂 I see way to many & hear too many bad stories about investing in africa as a black american, now if your white chinese or indian its like the gold rush there.

If you want to know more about this issue and the process inwhich those who are on this land will have to go through please see this book by this scholar Anthony Ephirim-Donkor The Making of an African King: Patrilineal and Matrilineal Struggle among the Awutu (Effutu) of Ghana

Oshay…please research before confusing people. In Ghana chiefs are the ultimate land custodians. Some families have settled on lands for generations but do not have the right to sell the land. Even when they sell the land, the local chief should be consulted. In the Asebu case, the family was only contesting about 100 acres of the supposed 5,000 acres! The Asebu case went to court and the court recently asserted that the family couldn’t stop any construction on the 100 acres land. In Ghana the chiefs have a lot of power over land issues because it’s engrained even in the Constitution that they’re the land custodians for their people. There’s a new fruit juice factory setup in Asebu area helping abandoned orange farmers sell their produce. They’re happy with the development. I also understand that farmers are compensated when their lands are taken within the allocated 5,000 acres. The diaspora should even make sure that if farmers are asked to relocate, that they’re compensated and asked to keep farming. Some small land farmers may take the compensation and never farm again due to multiple reasons including age, lack of help or equipment. There’re going to be issues with the diaspora coming to Africa, in this case Ghana, but don’t make the issues sound insurmountable. Lastly, Ghana could never be Liberia because Ghana was established with a functioning system of government before the diaspora came. The lack of government experience of the Liberia diaspora was one of the primary issues. Current returning diaspora are far more educated and technically experienced.

Land is a very sensitive issue & is already causing problems in many African Communities even without the Diaspora Return and ought ro be handled senstively. I give an example of my own accenstral home of Buganda in Uganda where land issues are causing troubles within local people. We do not want it to delay or inconvenience returning Diaspora people of which Iam one but local chiefs in Africa have culturally, traditionally & historically exercised undue authourity over their subjects that would in today's world be unacceptable and these "give aways by local chiefs" need to be collaborated with due deligence by following up with National Land Registry Authorities to ensure safe legal ownership. The problem with African societies is that many Africans have not traditionally had the need to register their property because that's the way it has been so you've many Africans who rightly have owned land without registration documents! Before any land let alone such large amounts of land are sold off, there ought to be meetings with locals to harmonise transfer of ownership. We need to demonstrate that we can handle and manage our African issues amicably & peacefully & our adversaries are watching! We love Diaspora Africans and Iam because we are. ❤

Perhaps African chiefs could consider implementing a referendum system to distribute land to the diaspora, which could reduce land disputes by gaining public consent. Raising public awareness across Africa about the Transatlantic slave trade and the involvement of chiefs in it is crucial. These chiefs hold a moral responsibility to close this historical gap, fostering reconciliation for the peaceful coexistence and prosperity of both descendants of Enslaved Africans and Continental Africans.

@@GgBrooketake your case to the Asantehene. If he does not agree to distribute some of the lands that he is holding as a custodian for the direct descendants yet to come then it is fair to accept that most of the other chiefs will also refuse any similar consideration. In general, the lands are all custodial. And in many countries, such as Ghana, freehold title is not available to non citizens or foreigners. The Asebu Free Land initiative leaders have been confronting the issues and generating solutions in very productive and successful ways. In conversations about the Great African Resettlement, it’s important to recognize the level of consciousness that most Diasporans have, and what that means. Many Indigenous Africans on the continent as well as Diasporans understand that we are truly interdependent upon each other. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for and it is important that we stay focused and be intentional about our solutions and making progress.

This problem can be resolved easily by purchasing land from a reputable real estate company where the land is litigation free and there are no issues between chiefs and families. Another way to avoid this is by buying land from a chief who owns the land outright with his immediate family...government land maybe available as well. The Pan African Village has issues with litigation between the paramount chief and some families who farmed on land that was sold to the diaspora. I expect the case to be settled soon and it will be interesting to see who wins...the chief or the families. THIS IS NOT AN ATTACK ON THE DIASPORA...it is a conflict between the chief and the families who claim the land is theirs.

REMEMBER DIASPORANS must appreciate that all lands in Ghana belong to somebody - local families. Also all Lands have vegetation on them and therefore not WASTE land. IF Diasporans think that they can carry guns and run over locals that will be another UNACCEPTABLE and wrong strategy. When it comes to land there is not absolute AUTHORITY in Ghana. Not many Ghanaians like the Chinese, Lebanese, and other foreigners doing galamsey in Ghana, destroying vegetation, water bodies etc. Our leaders are complicit in these confusions.
