Hey. Ghost notes, and mute notes are practically the same thing. A ghost note is a mute note, put into the context of a groove. When a note is written in parantheses in tabs (like (3) or (9)) it means it's harmonic. Hold your finger lightly on the string, right above a fret and hit the string. (5th and 7th and 12th fret is easiest to ring). Ghost notes are written as "x" in tabs. Good luck!

in essence them, the ghost notes are notes played without allowing the string you are playing to vibrate? its basically a percussive effect?

Hey somthingworng im also a rookie bassist and what I learned is that mute notes are notes of the bass you don't hold all the way completely, when you hit a mute not, you take you finger slightly off the string so you only hold the note for less than a second

John Taylor in Rio/ Duran Duran
@MaggieTheCat01
@MaggieTheCat01 3 жыл бұрын
My friend and I were chatting about Duran Duran's John Taylor a few weeks ago. She said that her ex, who used to play bass in a band, was listening to Rio one day when he said "That bass player's a bastard" (meaning he's really good). I just revisited Rio, and some of the comments were praising John's bass playing, saying he's playing _ghost notes,_ which is really difficult, apparently. Not knowing what ghost notes are, I searched for it, which is why I'm here. (You're fascinated by all that, I can tell. 😏) So, is John Taylor an underrated bass player?

Hi Scott, I am a bass player for about 5 months now, and I absolutely love your lessons. I've been learning so much thanks to you. My question now is, whats the difference between mute notes and ghost notes? In scores they are written in the same way(I think), and in tablature they are written as (3) and x respectively. Whats the difference between both sound wise and technique wise?

Wow 9 years ago this video was uploaded. A great piece for ghost notes is Barbary Coast. Jaco plays ghosts notes within the groove for the entire song. It adds a bit of chopiness to the already great bass line.

These used to confuse the heck out of me. The best "easy" song to learn about ghost notes is " baby ive got your money" by odb. Most charts and tabs show both ghost notes on the line as any other note, but to play it, and play it right you have to hit 2 ghost notes in rapid succession. Simple line to learn( just 3 notes), and itll get a smile out of A few girls in the crowd later on.

Thank you Scott, the Ghost Notes drove me crazy, but I have one question left. I don't seem to understand the Ghost Note of the open string. I know this is an old video from you but I really hope you can help me out. How do I play it? Btw I love your work. You are a great teacher.

This is so funny - I have the hardest time ***NOT*** playing dead notes because I play them to keep locked-in to the tempo!!!!!!!!!!! I guess it's kind of a crutch from the days when I was teaching myself how to play (by mimicking whatever I heard on the radio) and I've needed to un-learn it. Oh wait, first I'd better learn to be deliberate about the selecting the string to play the dead notes on.....Cool beans, Scott - thanks! :-)

What about using a muted tap on the string as a ghost note? Like, sometime I instinctually kinda softly slap the muted string for the first ghost note, then mute and pluck for the second with the same finger on my right hand, and then let the third ring out, and it seems to have a little gallop feel to it. Is that, I guess, wrong?
