We're lukewarm on "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," the sequel to 2021's "Ghostbusters: Afterlife." The latest film in the franchise is an improvement on its predecessor, as it does a better job of blending the old and the new. But the action comedy from director and co-writer Gil Kenan still struggles to cram in too many characters, images and subplots, tugging at our nostalgia for the original 1984 "Ghostbusters" while also spinning the series forward with new characters. Co-written by Jason Reitman, who directed "Afterlife." Starring Paul Rudd, Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Bill Murray, Kumail Nanjiani, Annie Potts and Patton Oswalt. In theaters March 22.

Came here to see you folks review this after reading Christie's review on Roger Ebert. Was unaware that Gil Kenan directed this, which is cool, since he made the vastly underrated Monster House which should have won the Oscar for best animated feature of 2006 over HAPPY FEET (!!!!). Fun review C and A, thank you. Last Ghostbusters movie I liked was 2 in 1989, if only for Bill Murray's line "Yeah, I know Bassmasters, sure..."

I finally saw Afterlife the other day, too - and they Force Awakens-ed it: rebooted it with the exact same plot as the original, with similarly bad results. The original '84 film was written by comedians, and Afterlife and Frozen Empire were not. Why not let Patton Oswalt and Kumail Nanjani take a crack at the script, instead?

I honestly blame all the problems the 2016 reboot on what this one became. While I have issues with both the humour but more importantly the directing decisions and editing of 2016 it was objectively a comedy about people catching ghosts. However what I think after 3 viewings over the years damages that film is it has all the hallmarks of that era of big American studio comedies where they seem to let the script go out the window and say improvise and I think in segments it works either the director or cast or more likely director, cast and editor couldn’t cut together a film where both the comedy came through and more importantly the characters came through. Scene after scene the characters seem to change because their actual personalities were lost with improvisations scenes and takes. While I think this can work with some comedies the story they were also trying to tell needed to be kept more intact. Then when everyone complained before and after the film the people behind the camera in the production side took the wrong message ghostbusters shouldn’t be a comedy it needs to be reverential to the past and now that Reitman and Ramis have died I think it makes it more complicated for them not to think about it in that way.

Having now seen the movie. The frozen ghost needed the Mckenna grace character to be possessed and somehow, the mechanics of the soul removing device was conveniently written into this plot to let it happen. Yeeesssshhhhh. No machine = no plot = no movie.

Frankly, I think they are scared of the GB "fanbase". And for good reasons. Just like with Star Wars, the culture war makes studios hide behind the past as protection. Not because of lack of creativity on offer, but out of fear of a "fan" backlash. Not a good way to make movies (or even blockbusters for that matter).

I don't know, man. I seriously doubt I'll go see this. Not trying to sound precious or anything, but basically, I liked the first Ghostbusters quite a lot. Full stop. That's it, really. I haven't truly enjoyed anything in this franchise I've seen since then. A common criticism I've heard about this one besides the obvious one of constantly trying to remind you of the 1984 movie is that there is too much stuff, and yet somehow not enough, because it just doesn't measure up. I think I'll pass on this and see "Immaculate" instead! (Hot nuns make the world go 'round, after all) lol

I loved the original Ghostbusters in my childhood but could care less about these recent remakes. how about having Paul Rudd, Simi Lu, Bryan Tyree Henry and Kamil N. be the new GBs, have them try to put a team together in NYC, fighting ghosts while living in an inflated, post pandemic NY. The Ghostbusters saving NY (and maybe civilization) being forgotten 40 years later is like if we forgot about the Vietnam War or people forgetting about WW2 in the 1980s. Amusingly, another fan favorite franchise does the same thing. Originally, when Star Wars hit the theaters, it was made to sound like the Jedi had vanished (yet to be determined how at this point) so long ago that no one remember them and even considered it a superstition or sad religion... only to find out that it only happened 16-20 years before the OT and that the Jedi were galactically famous for negotiating disputes and keeping the peace... It'd be like if the Beatles were forgotten 20 years after their peak. *Many* of the senior officers in the Imperial Fleet would have fought by Jedi and been commanded by them and served under them... I think we just have to chalk it up to continuity issues that are inevitable when sequels and prequels and whatever else are made so far apart from the originals. Of course, I guess with SW, Lucas started in the middle of the series and had to work backwards then forwards while the GB creators could have made the transition smoother? I dunno... eh well.

Why is it hard to get about Ray Parker Jr's song? In Ghostbusters 2 it was already established that it existed in the GB world. I think you guys are asking for logic that isn’t part of the GB world. We're talking about a world were a 50 foot marshmallow man walked down the street and the statue of liberty was moved via an NES controller and a toaster danced to "Higher and higher". I will say the pacing could have been better, but overall it was a good movie.

I know I'm in the minority here in saying I never understood the attraction to Ghostbusters in general, so the idea of seeing a legacy sequel that has pretty shameless callbacks is not on my to do list. The review is more entertaining than the picture itself! The one thing I do want to comment about is the sharp looking Izod that Alonso was sporting! Every once in a while he's wearing something that has me check online retailers to buy. Case in point; he had a Cannon Films logo tee on a review. I have one now hanging in my closet and if it's on in public, guys in my age range will be nodding in approval.

The original was a 100% comedy starring three of the most gifted comedians at the time. The ghost busting was just the vehicle for the comedy. That is what is missing is the new "generation" are too serious and bland with little to do. There is no it factor saying man we want to see these new people take a crack at this. The studio knows it too, since they cram 100% nostalgia in every ounce of it. The plot was too scary and "serious" and the new characters are not zany, they are earnest. It is like they do not get what the original was at all.

I remember seeing the original in a packed theater in 1984. Probably the most fun I’ve ever had in a movie theater. The commotion that occurred when the Stay-Puf Marshmallow Man was revealed was a level of communal public laughter/hysteria/craziness that will never be equaled. The movie knew its zeitgeist. It was perfect for its time. But it faded pretty quickly. All the sequels sucked (ok I haven’t seen all of them - let me know which didn’t) and even the original has not aged particularly well and looks terrible on home video. Even by the 90s it was outdated. I don’t understand why people keep revisiting this. Note to my fellow boomers: you will never be young again. The 80s will never come back and they shouldn’t because they were actually terrible except for the fact that we were young and had friends and fully functioning bodies. The fun is all over. Time to accept this. Democracy is over, the planet is melting, and it’s our fault for laughing at Bill Murray instead of trying to build a better world. Let Ghostbusters die.
