I love to imagine that: Vampire already doesn't have a soul, instead it's Will and Beast, and if you kill him... You kill his Will, emerging the Beast inside. He transforms into a Varholf from warhammer fantasy.

Want to make Van Helsing 100x better? Watch the whole thing in black-and-white, rather than just the intro. You’d be surprised how much more interesting it is, and also hides some of the dated effects.

The mix of action and horror does seem very dnd. I would love a Call of Cthulhu Grim Hollow guide so you could do the dark fantasy more investigatory and tense.

Honestly, Van Helsing in this is a better example of a paladin rather than a ranger.
@GhostfireGaming

Hard to say. IMO Paladin’s are mechanically so heavy armoured and melee based to feel satisfying as a stand in for Van Helsing with his many more technical gadgets… It’s why we wrote a specific Monster Hunter class, to try really hit the core fantasy of characters like Van Helsing rather than circle around it like Paladins and Rangers do.

@@GhostfireGaming I was speaking in terms of RP and archetype, but I disagree with your premise. Dex-based Paladins with studded leather, defense fighting style, and shield of faith max their AC at 20, enabling all kinds of fun chicanery. And just flavor their smites as swiping their sword with holy water or alchemists' fire.

Paladins are based off of King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table. I had never heard of Van Helsing before this video, so I could be wrong, but this video's depictions of him don't strike me as an Arthurian knight-like figure.

@geoffdewitt6845 Жыл бұрын
@@trenthobson2756 I mean, paladins can draw some inspiration from the Arthurian Cycle, but they don't have to. Text supports a more expansive reading of the archetype. Please see the vengeance, conquest, and Watcher paladins.

Van Helsing is the antithesis of horror and fear. Van Helsing is a high powered, badass who actually hunts monsters-several of whom fear him. The essence of the fear at the heart of horror is vulnerability. You want fear, look at Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Alien, The Mist, Dawn Of The Dead, etc. The common thread in successful horror narratives is that the protagonists face an overwhelmingly powerful horror-against which they cannot survive. They are on the run for their very survival from the evil(s) and can only hope to discover some way to shift the situation to gain some possible hope of not suffering some terrible certain doom. Van Helsing was a super-hero movie with basically a video game character as a hero.

While it is remarkably difficult and has failed numerous times, a more powerful protagonist does not necessarily diminish the horror. Of course you can get various forms of horror with the goal only being to survive the horror in one way or another or to defeat it on a way that seems extremely difficult and all-or-nothing. But fighting horrors, while taking away the more traditional fear of defenselessnes, opens up a new avenue of vulunrabiluty; now it's no longer a vicious hunt but a full-fledged fight for survival with tooth and claw. All these horros are inherently more powerful than you through various means and if one is to beat them then never easily, always at a hair's differece. This means you can never rest, never lose focus as while you need to give it your all to even be equal to these things, they are this strong just oit from themselves, so if one makes even one mistake it's over. Now the Van Helsing movie did not convey this in any good fashion, there were singular instances were it came across somewhat o.k. but nothing more. I think this feeling can best be experienced, ironic given your comparison, in a video-game. Think the first three Resident Evil Games; sure, you can kill most zombies in one or two shots but if you slow down or aren't careful, from any angle one could come and end it.

With respect, I've always taken Van Helsing's line of "they're all the same" not as a sign of ignorance on his part, but a sign of indifference to the beast he's dispatched to kill. He's used to the cycle of hunting all these fantastical creatures

Not only Van Hellsing but there's plenty of mediocre early 2000s films that provide excellent sources of inspiration for your D&D games. Heck, the creator of the Eberron campaign setting has flat out said that he's taken inspiration from films such as the Mummy franchise and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for his creation.

If you want a good take on the "specialized monster hunter" concept, Vampire Hunter D (the books) not only has monster hunting as a legit profession, but the hunters are specialized in what specific monsters they hunt with Vampire Hunters being considered some of the best depending on the strongest thing they're known to hunt. It's a really cool take on the concept that I feel does a lot of what you describe in this video but a bit more expanded on.

Ohh how bout "Dark Gnomes" a gnome town that got pulled into the Shadowfell, infusing their illusion magic with shadow, making it more deadly, and they create dark twisted flesh/mechanical golems, thats what pop into my head when the vid explained the dark dwarves in Van Helsing....damn these could be cool, and we don't really have any twisted gnomes in 5e, you got elves and and dwarves that have evil sub races, and with gnomes, that are generally considered a good race..... The pain is sweet.

Draculas transformation in Van Hellsing is paying homage to the Castlevania Dracula transformations as they do look similar and Van Hellsing turning into werewolf seems similar to cornell from legacy of darkness.

I think Dooregar gets me more than any other mispronunciation. Like, everyone can say DW-arf. No one says Dooraf. A Dooraf is a tall leopard-horse. Why can no one say DW-er-gar? DU-ER-GAR. DWER-GAR. Duergar. Like Dwarf. Same sounds. Not Doo-ragga.

I think the jabs at the film were overly harsh. It felt less of a "heres fun things you can use for your campaign" and more "Van Helsing's a bad movie.....oh and heres stuff you can use in D&D i guess" My fiance and I are big fans of the film, and while we know its not perfect, it feels kinda mean spirited how this feels like its just kicking down at the movie for 25 minutes while loosely tying it to a TTRPG video format.

Also, Van Helsing hates being a monster hunter. He is basically being coerced into doing it by the church under a promise to reveal his forgotten memories. So of course he's jaded and says things like, "Yeah, yeah, they're all the same." Because they all just need to die, and he's the guy that has to kill them. One way or another. Sorry, I know that's not necessarily the point of this video, but this weary portrayal is a fascinating angle to approach this character from, as an NPC or as a PC. Think a paladin who is questioning their faith and their oath, and forced to do more jobs that they don't really have the heart for, but they are forced or motivated by something the church is holding just out of their reach.
