I am in no way an expert on Giant Schnauzers. After watching a lot of videos I noticed that they seem to be made of springs and they are very snappy. I love the way they move. It’s kind of comical and one of their endearing qualities.

Valomie, what training did you do to your dog? I am trying to tech my Schnauzer or get him trained.
@valomie6 жыл бұрын
The short answer is positive reinforcement, especially for trick training. Kyzer's tricks looked great because he wanted to do them and he performed them with enthusiasm. Training is something that we both enjoyed immensely. We were best friends who spoke different languages, but each trick we perfected became part of a shared language. Training should never be a chore - it should be fun.

Beautiful dog! How long was the training? I'm thinking about getting a giant. Our Rottweiler died a few years ago and it hasn't been the same without a big dog in the house. I now have dig allergies so looking for a large breed that is low shed, low dander.
@valomie8 жыл бұрын
TheSavvySwede Thank you! We attended high level obedience classes until he was about three. He was always the star of his class and a pleasure to work with because of his intelligence and enthusiasm. I had hoped to compete with him in obedience eventually, but then I went to law school and started a demanding career. So we just performed for friends and family. We were always working on learning new behaviors and perfecting old ones. If you have any questions about Giants, please let me know. They are a challenging breed, but so incredible.

Great tricks! How the heck did you get your Schnauzer to play dead so well? My standard Schnauzer would be impossible to train to do that. Oh and to whoever gave this video a thumbs down they need to seriously consider seeking professional help.
@valomie6 жыл бұрын
It actually took several years to perfect. The build up of trust between us was a big part of it. He was not a dog who would ever roll over or show his belly, so asking him to fall over on his side and stay stock still was rather a big ask. But I always rewarded him heavily for it. And over time I would push the envelope more and more - waiting for some time before releasing him, walking circles around him, petting him, picking up a paw and dropping it. That trick was almost always our grand finale as it was such a crowd pleaser. As you can probably tell, he loved to perform tricks, and as time went on, I think he really came to like that one a lot.
@cozitsmj875 жыл бұрын
@@valomie Hah! Funny how you mentioned not wanting to roll over. I quit bothering with teaching that trick to my boy a couple months since I got him at 3 months. Long story short he's now 22 months and we're revisiting trying to learn submissive tricks other than the Down command starting off with lying on his side which is helpful with grooming

Giant Schnauzers should never have their ears cut. In the UK we do not dock their tails either (unless a proven working dog)
@davidphillips18453 жыл бұрын
@@chris45rpm Why not have ears cropped? It cuts down on ear infections and looks great!
@chris45rpm3 жыл бұрын
@@davidphillips1845 As a vet I can tell you cropping actually makes the ears more prone to infection, both during the process and afterwards as the inner ear is more exposed. Secondly whether it looks great is purely subjective, but ultimately it is completely unnecessary and purely an aesthetic preference (sadly).
@davidphillips18453 жыл бұрын
@@chris45rpm So is circumcision but they haven't outlawed that in the UK. There are many vets and breeders that say it definitely cuts down on ear infections because it allows more air in the ear and less moisture which is a breeding ground for bacteria. But even if it was only cosmetic that's okay too. It's a matter of the owner's preference and it doesn't harm the dog when done correctly.
@chris45rpm3 жыл бұрын
@@davidphillips1845 Veterinary science states there is no medical or physical advantage to the animal from the procedure. As for circumcision, It should be banned. Genital mutilation in the the name of religion with the design to purely dull the sexual organs is ridiculous.
