Why I chose a Giant Schnauzer over another Doberman.

I wanted to share my thoughts on why I did not get another Doberman Pinscher after Kazi passed away. Kazi had so many amazing qualities and I plan to instill those into Tux as we raise him. I thought it would be nice to share why some other working dog and herding breeds did not make the cut as my choice for family dog.
Some of the breeds that were recommended were Mastiff, Pitbull, Great Dane, Cane Corso, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Dogo Argentino, Boxer, Rottweiler, and Australian Shepherd.
The breeds I was interested in were the Doberman, Dutch Shepherd, Malinois, Border Collie, and Giant Schnauzer.

After two Dobies, i am now on my 2nd Giant. Two things you should know. 1. Always keep in mind your Giant is smarter than you, and 2. They are also referred to as Peter Pan dogs because they refuse to grow up. They are clowns and where most breeds reach the adult status between 1 and 2 years, count on 4 years for your Giant 😂. You made an excellent choice and i wish you all the best!

best description !!! My 9 year old believes she is 2. a pure clown but also the greatest guarddog of the family or workplace. She lets noone get in the office but when the "fun persons" comes she acts like a pup. also have a 9 year old labrador and shes just an old fart. she never runs unless there is food at the goal.

I had 2 giants, both german working line. Extremely clever, extremely protective. The first one was also cuddly 😂 Cautious with strangers, dominant with other dogs, but never agressive. And as i lived in a flat, i went with them for long walks, 3-4 hours a day, plenty of energy. You made a perfect choice.

My only issue is that once’s she goes. I’ll have a hard time getting another one. So if I do chose to. You bet it’ll be another Doberman lol

I just got a giant about 4 weeks ago. Honestly, it's surprising how much he's exceeding my expectations. Incredibly smart and very confident and protective already of my two year old. There seems to be a nice curious respect and apprehension when people see the giant schnauzer. I like that it's unique but, under that fur it's a controlled beast. They look like werewolves too lol😂

David, I went through the same process, but over time. Had, in order: Rottweiler, Schnauzer Standard, Giant Schnauzer, Malinois, Great Dane, Spanish Mastiff, Italian Mastiff (Cane Corso) and German Shepherd... all great dogs, each with it's tops and downs, but no doubt, the Giant Schnauzer is my nº1. Checks all boxes to me, and very importantly, natural instinct to know how to behave in all circumstances (more than any other). Very balanced character. Not sure if I was just lucky, but from other owners, it seems to be this way. Deep connection. However, the 1st two years of age, they are pure energy...that goes down to "better than normal" from year 3 onwards. Be careful with extra exercise in the 1st 6-12 months, as all large breeds are sensitive to over physical stress when growing... Have a great life with your Giant. Cheers from Spain.

@@michaelo1676 Hi Michael. After the Giant turned 2 years old, he was that kind of dog that knew how to behave well in any circumstance. Incredible balance. Before that, it was all play, play, play. The German Shepherd is not as confident as the Giant, and this compromises his behavior at times. Even after the 2 years of age, he is still on a play mode regularly. When he wants attention, he tends to bark w/o other purpose. The Giant was more of a gentleman. Both very attached to me, but the Shepherd a bit due to dependency, the Giant of simple will. Regarding having them at home, the Giant looses almost no hair, wheras the Shepherd is a rug production plant, haha. Not sure if I was just lucky with Kuro (the Giant), but he was a truly amazing dog. I hope this helps.

And the GS you have to worry about the grooming. I've had a miniature before and I didn't care for taking him alot to the groomers.

I have a Doberman Pinscher. This is my third Doberman. Before I decided on the breed or type of dog to get, I researched the working class breed thoroughly. This was the class that I wanted to pick or select my furbaby from. When all was said and done, my selection was narrowed-down to two dogs. The German Shepherd and the Doberman Pinscher. I loved these two dogs due to their history of guarding and protecting. They were also the only two breeds that law enforcement and the military used. They are highly regarded by security firms, as well. The things that tilted the decision to the Doberman Pinscher, was its hair. It had short hair, and required less maintenence. I had visited homes that had German Shepherds, and the hair was a no-no for me. The thought of seeing hair floating across the room, indicated to me that dog hair would get into everything, even my foods. This was a deal breaker for me. I could not be more happy with my furbabies/furbuddies. The Dobermans have excelled in every way. They are everything that your read about them. They are excellent in every way, if they are trained and socialized very early. You must be seen by them as the Top Dog! The leader of the pack. They responds and respects a strong leader.😢

Agree totally. Our 1st family dog was a Bouvier des Flandres, he lived to 11 1/4 years, died of cancer. We then decided on a German Shepherd, believing less work with grooming, oh foolish mortal. I just traded grooming, for constant vacuuming. When he was 5 yrs we added a female German Shepherd, Czech lines. She is almost 12 and winding down with age and ailments. We are returning to another Bouvier. For us, they are more calm and observant, only using enough force or intimidation as the situation calls for. They can be a little stubborn, but not hyper or trigger happy, as some Shepherd lines can be...shoot first, ask questions later.

A Beauceron would be a good choice too. They're one of the breeds that Doberman's & Rottweilers are made from. They always get mistaken for dobbie/rot mix lol. They were known cattle dogs too but not like how brdr collis are on the herds heels, Beaus are more lax & do it at a calm distance, less stressful for the cattle. They're sensitive & intuitive too but not for first timers, they need something to do. Some do bite work too. From what i hear they're on the more gentler side of guard dogs. Some folks use them for service dogs too. Plus they can either look really goofy & friendly or they can look terrifying, just depends on if u crop their ears or not.

Many people do not know that the original pinschers and schnauzers were once the same stock from which the individual breeds came. This was before there were formal standards for “breeds”. Smooth coated pinschers and rough coated called “schnauzers” were often in the same litter before the “breeds” were refined and developed into what we see today.

Hello, I really enjoyed your video. I’m so sorry for the loss of your beautiful dog Cozzi. I’m also a dog lover. I currently own three dogs: a GSD, a Schnoodle and an American Staffordshire mix. You stated that, “pitbulls aren’t very intelligent.” After raising multiple pits, I’ve learned different! They are very intelligent! They may not be as athletic or active as you may like but very intelligent. My Amstaff has been the most obedient and easiest to train. I’m recovering from a traumatic brain injury and it’s my pitbull that gets me out the bed and is by my side daily, on and off leash. I’m an experienced dog owner. Over the years, I’ve raised pure breeds (Labrador retrievers, American Staffordshires, Toy Poodles, German Shepherd Dogs, Beagles) and mutts and my preferred choice is a pit bull type dog. They are very loyal and obedient with the right training. My dog Buddy (American Staffordshire mix) is protective yet non-aggressive, will fetch, run laps, follow commands, guard the yard and family and simply be a couch potato. I think you made a great choice for your family - Giant Schnauzer - an amazing breed! I lot of versatility in the breed. ❤

I have had a Giant Schnauzer bitch for 10 years and lost het to cancer. I incriminate the dog food we bought for her. No matter what the brands tell you, dog feed is basically a Gigo model: garbage in, garbage out and your dog ultimately paid the price. She was a lovely family dog, but her presence was never that of a Doberman. Especially after having run through our wet pasture, we felt we were left with a half size dog as the hair diminished in volume. I subsequently had two Kangals (Turkish shepherds) and now you're talking guard dog and presence. Wishing you lots of happiness with your beautiful Schnauzer.

I really thought about a giant when I was searching after our boxer/cattle-dog mix passed, I ended up with a standard schnauzer. I had a pick from two separate litters, had narrowed it down to a female, when I got the kennel, I chose my girl because a) she was a pip-squeak (she still is, about an inch shorter and 10 pounds lighter than the breed standard after a year) and b) she was the most out-going puppy of the bunch. She was the first to trot over to greet us. Anyway, she's my buddy, but I have to admit she is quite the handful. :D I think the giants tend to be a little calmer, still energetic but not quite so (what I call) "crazy." I think maybe enthusiastic is a better word. HAVE FUN with your new dog! I think you made a great choice. One other thing I think you will appreciate is that they know when to bark and when not to bark, at least it seems that way to me.

Our Doberman was the perfect Family dog. My Daughter just lost her GS of 10 years and I’ve never witnessed a deeper connection between a person and a dog. My Rottweiler was my first dog. Over 40 years later I still have fond memories. He was a big teddy.

I have an 8 month old salt and pepper giant schnauzer, after having a GSD. She's very smart and picks things up quickly when properly motivated, but she also has that stubbornness they're known for. She also loves to roll in the mud but the wire coat is actually pretty easy to get clean. She is really wary of people she doesn't know but gets along with other dogs great.

Schnauzer's are great dogs for many reasons one of the best things are health and lack of shedding. I've had the pleasure of living with 3. I've also have had 2 GSD's. Our first GSD shedded to a point that I was always amazed that there was still fur on her body. Our current GSD is a working line sable from Germany the breeder told us what to feed him. Long story short he barely sheds its crazy to me. I'm not sure if it's just his genetics or if what we feed him is what stops the massive shedding. All we feed him is royal Canin GSD with raw beef with liquid omegas and joint supplement. Malinois are just too high energy for me as it is I take our GSD to the park daily for high intensity training the obedience training and bite work weekly. Really I just really like the working line shepherd dogs, terriers, and rotties. It's really tough losing a fur child it was especially tough losing our first GSD for whatever reason not sure why she was just a great dog.

One breed that you may not have come across is the CBR. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever was bread to retrieve and guard. They descend from hunting hounds and the Lessor Newfoundland. They weigh in between 70 and 120 ponds and are famous for very cold wet weather retrieving. They are wonderful with the family and very, very guard-ie. Their nickname is the ‘pit-bull of the marsh’ because they will not tolerate anyone or any dog who isn’t part of your hunting party. They will run them off and don’t hesitate to bite. But be warned they are not Labradors. These are real working dogs that must be worked hard daily. I like that mine is very alert and is an excellent watch dog, but has the mastiff type guard qualities of not backing down, so he’s an asset to our security. AND I can take him hunting all day in cool weather where he’s a beast. Having said all that this may not be a good breed for the first time dog owner. Most new owners think they are getting a fuzzy brown Lab, but what they are actually getting is a super athletic retrieving Rottweiler. The other downside is they tend to overheat when working them in temps over 80f. PS I have always been a fan of the Giant Schnauzer for the reasons you mentioned. Nice vid.

@@oui2826 most Breeders have been breeding CBRs smaller because the smaller dogs tend to hunt better and live longer, but there are some very large dogs still being bread. I have come across several. Remember that one of the breeds that make up the CBR is the lesser Newfoundland. And although the lessor Newfoundlands were not as big as the Newfoundland we know today, they were still substantial dogs.

Never thought of my GS as a furry Doberman, but whatever floats! I will say they don't need cropped ears for them to have a presence. My question is does he stay in the house with the family and if so when he goes outside to the bathroom and walking or playing outside when he come back in does he smell. I say that to say this I had a bernadoddle Rip Onxy. He lived in the house but when you took him outside for whatever reason he would smell like a skunk for about 10-15mins when he came back in the house, it was so weird to me. Tux is essentially an indoor dog, meaning he sleeps and stays inside most of the time. However, I work him daily in the back, and he regularly dives in the pond and goes in the dirt and mud. So when he gets gross, we keep him off the furniture and will bathe him a few times a week.

Large Standard Schnauzers were mixed with Bouviers, Great Danes, and I think possibly standard poodles to get the Giant Schnauzers, whereas German Pinschers were mixed with larger dogs, rottweilers, I think Great Danes and some others to get the Doberman Pinscher. Originally the prototypes; the Standard Schnauzer and the German Pincsher where just long and short haired versions of the exact same dog. Modern breeders have even crossed the two types recently and you end up getting both Pinscher-ish or more Schnauzer-ish puppies again in the very same litter, but the pups did manage to lose the trademark black and pepper salt colorations.

My kids are 10 and 8 and have experience with our last Doberman, however they have had some learning to do with Tux as a puppy. While he has not harmed them, there have been combative moments from him that we were able to mitigate. Puppies in general are quite mouthy and are not well behaved. While teething they can break skin while instigating play. I personally wouldn't raise a GS puppy and baby at the same time. It's too much work.
