Our giant was the runt of the litter and she is currently 90 pounds and a year and a half old. Her father was 110 pounds. She is like having a toddler in the house again. If she is being quiet then you need to find her. And she can't go out to pee without a toy in her mouth. She panics if she can't find one. Our backyard is littered with stuffed animals because she forgets to bring them back in.

Our boy, Baron, went to 139, and truly was all muscle, never soft or OVER weight, and actually looked trim and fit! He was from an excellent breeder; so, some excellent genetics were on his side for health and temperment. Still, he was defiinitely strong-willed. We were very, VERY careful to socialize and train (with whole-family-consistency) at a very early age, and throughout life. He was loved by the entire neighborhood! Lived 12 years. Died on his birthday. Thrived despite a few toe cancers, but ultimately succumbed to osteo sarcoma in his last 45 days. Went very fast. Miss him terribly. He was my stalwart pal!

To anyone even thinking about getting a GS. Take heed of this video. This is the cold truth not click bait. Our male GS is nearly 6 years old so I know what they are all about. We’ve had other dogs before. Loads of exercise every day, very smart, gets bored very easily. Eats a lot (our has raw food). Very demanding of your time and attention. Think of them as a big heavy hairy toddler that you cannot leave. All that said I love mine to bits. Not an easy dog though.

@@DogsNowChannel No problem. Credit where it’s due. Before we got our GS I did a lot of reading up & spoke to breeders aswell. He is exactly as I was told he would be. Lately I’ve seen some quite misleading puff pieces about owning a GS on KZfaq that concern me TBH. You have been accurate and fair. People need to realise what they are taking on. I would not recommend a GS with young children for example. Being honest with yourself avoids a lot of misery for both the owner & dog, there are scores of other dog breeds to choose from to get the perfect dog to suit your family, home, work/life balance. A GS is rare for good reason.

Jon. Interesting. I have a gigantic property so there is a lot of running room, etc, and was considering the breed. I believe all you said and have heard it before. Puzzling though, is that our neighbor in California had one and the dog was very friendly, to me and other neighbors. The owner, a small woman said that yeah, it needed training but that she'd never had any trouble with it at all and that very early on, it learned she was the boss. She said she'd heard that "who is boss" had to be reinforced EVERY single day, but that had not been true with her dog. Biggest surprise for me was that the dog seemed very calm. Energy yeah, but quite calm. I expected a wayward, headstrong whirlwind. Nope... Maybe she got a 'prince' of a dog, an outlier.
@jfro5867
@jfro5867 Жыл бұрын
@@Allan-et5ig Hi. I understand what you mean about ‘be the boss’ and that’s correct sort of BUT that doesn’t mean you have to be mean or mistreat. We are not breaking the dog or anything at all like that. Never. It means showing lots of love, being very consistent with house rules, masses of socialization when young and forever TBH, being very confident and calm yourself in all situations because the dog needs YOU to lead otherwise it will make its own decisions and yes it’s an every day thing. Females are probably less dominant you dont say if your lady neighbours is/was. Sounds like she had good energy and that’s why her dog was the way it was. A big garden is a great advantage provided it’s secure. Our dog is naturally a teffiic guard dog but can clear a 5 foot fence easily if he is minded to so it’s got to be secure. Very strong prey drive. This all sounds like I am putting you off and in a way I am. I absolutely love my GS and he loves us, no doubt about it but these are not easy dogs. Since I left the breeders I have only seen one other GS in 6 years yet hundreds of other breeds out & about. That tells its own story. I would go and find a registered breeder, explain what you are thinking and see if they will let you go and meet some GS dogs, have a long chat and be honest with yourself. I would not buy a GS without seeing it’s mother, it’s home, knowing who the sire was. They are magnificent dogs, handsome, clever, funny, strong willed, powerful, so loyal, that want to be with you all the time. Best of luck with your decision.
@jfro5867
@jfro5867 Жыл бұрын
slightly further…..forgot to add. Our GS is excellent with neighbours too and calm but he would not tolerate them coming into the garden or house unannounced at all and would run at them, and charge them, no doubt. All the postal people know about him. So to be 100% safe I keep our dog in the rear secure garden all the time where he can run in & out of the house if he wants, I always know where he is safe UNLESS I am with him out the front or out out. If anyone comes into the front he barks like mad through the metal see thru gate. You won’t miss him put it that way! Hope that makes sense.

I'm getting a poodle puppy in a couple weeks (just worked out with a friend) just for my boy to have a companion while I work. Soccer and walks are enough on some days but not enough every day. I agree with almost everything you said about Giants. I've had three now, they are HIGHLY intelligent..They do get quite attached to the primary care giver. Don't worry if you already have a cat in your home, they think cat's are dumb. But be careful about strangers on your property if you don't socialize them. All of ours were boy's, ranging from 90 lbs to 115 lbs. Breaks your heart when they pass away. They truly are a family member. Don't think you can have them in a large size kennel, one of ours was potty trained in that, and he could open the gate with his teeth and paw. Not for First time owners, without having a stern handle on it. They love water. I miss mine still...

Giant schnauzers are a ton of work and require almost a 24/7 commitment. There are rescue organizations for this breed, because many people cannot handle them. Unlike a mini, a giant will totally change your lifestyle. They’re very loving dogs, but not for most people. I speak from experience I’ve had both types of schnauzers.
@elenarodriguez9875

Every dog needs training and to know that the human is the pack leader, regardless of breed or size. I have worked with many dogs for years and some of the most aggressive ones were small or even breeds people don’t “expect” to be aggressive. At the end of the day dogs are still animals with teeth and can bite so humans are ALWAYS the ones responsible for the dog’s behavior. People need to get a dog that is right for their lifestyle and be educated not just getting a dog based on looks. And it is not fair to the dog when HUMANS are not educated on what they are getting themselves into and they need to be accountable for that. Any dog can be a great addition just like any dog can be a danger. One of the worst dog bites I got was from a Yorkie that had bit multiple people in a two week span. And one of the sweetest dogs I worked with was a Cane Corso that never even curled his lip. I love schnauzers. They are great dogs!

My Giant is an amazing family dog. Lovable, ruff and tuff, and mischeivious. He hates storms, and actually chewed through a wooden door when my wife and I was at work. I cannot however, brag on my dog enough, easily trained, and always in tune with his family and surroundings. Naturally protective, some people say dogs are only protective when trained, this isn't true with the GS, he will protect his family if he senses danger. Be watchful of them around children, because they dont know their own strength, and can easily knock down a 200 pound man without effort. They want to be with you at all times, but do have a mind of their own, and will take charge of a unexperienced owner. My approach to my GS was never through yelling or hitting, (this is a huge NO NO), I've always used repetitive training, love, and shown devotion to his needs, in return he has become a wonderful pet. A super domineering owner can turn this dog into something to be feared-so understand the GS won't take to cruelty and become timid, but will become offensive because thats their nature. My GS is my best buddy, I'd recommend this dog to anyone who has experience with large breeds.

How are GS with small kids? Two scenarios I would appreciate providing more info: 1) kid being 2 years old and the GS being a puppy. What should I expect there? 2) kid being 5-6 years old and the the GS being a puppy. Again, what should I expect there? Are GS gentle with kids in general? Any specific things I should be aware of beforehand? Do they tolerate toddlers’ harsh touch/play? What about grooming? Can I do it myself? Frequency? Thank you.

Schnauzers don't like noise, shout....in my opinion this breed of dog is cute, nice and have a lot of energy 😅 they likes to be the center of attention,they are gentle but they have a character, and they don't tolerate harsh touch 😅 All the breed schnauzers have the same character but i think GS are calmer than mini schnauzers 😅. We have a 6 month old giant schnauzer and a 6 month old german shepherd. Our giant is extremely friendly and playful but it is a VERY physical play to say the least. She learns new commands with 10-20 repetitions typically but keep sessions to 5-15 minute segments with play and praise between😂 the activity and mental stimulation required for giants is very high….i put in 6-11 miles on foot every day typically so I can’t imagine what our pups put in🤣 we have 17 and 11 year old girls and our 11 year old would have had a lot of trouble handling our giant 5 years ago…but if you do not leave a younger child unsupervised i would see no issue at all👍 natural property protection instincts started showing at 3.5-4 months old(but warms up to friends n family very quickly) we have been socializing in public since 3 months old and she does quite well with external stimulation. All in all i would recommend a giant schnauzer in a heartbeat as long as you have TONS of time to devote to the pup and a good sized yard😁👍

We got our GS when he was 9 weeks old, trained him ourselves. My brother (much younger than me:) was 18 months old, my sister was yet to come. Our Short has NEVER made any harm to either of them, not even unintentionally. He was extremely big and strong, even for this race, but equally delicate and careful with kids. Sometimes they happened to pull his ears (or tongue!) and stick fingers in his nose or eyes, as very little children can do. He just sighed and moved aside. I don't know any other GS living with toddlers, so I cannot guarantee its always the same. But ours was an example of goodness.

Giant Schnauzers are pretty on-par with German Shepherds as far as strength goes. Ours was a protection dog that did quite a bit of cart-pulling. I was around 220lbs at that time(he's passed away, and I've lost weight), and he was content to pull that for as long as I ever asked him to. For context, he was about 105lbs at his heaviest point. I'be owned purebreds of 6 different breeds in my life. If I could start over from the beginning, I would have started and stuck with Giant Schnauzers, and never looked back. They are large but not unmanageably so, very trainable, can learn a lot of different jobs/sports, very loyal, standoffish with strangers... there are too many positive traits to list. A truly outstanding breed.

I some time wonder if she is a giant teddy bear as seems to be all lovy dowy. I, however, to my dislike, very timid. Any dog being aggressive or dominant , be it medium or large or giant, she gets scare and runs towards human protection with her tail between legs. But at the same time does everything to play with the dogs. It makes me wonder if she can be bold and protective when things go south for us. I believe this breed is a bit skittish.

@@treasurewilliams13 it does vary but I would just recommend that you see the parents of the dog before you buy a puppy to make sure they aren’t too big for you and so you can see the dog overall.

Sake, you Americans are . Let's teach them to fight.. attack,, where as, over here in Scotland, we teach our dogs to stand fast, be calm , enjoy their life, with their leader, and family.

I have had all my vets tell me to never feed a dog raw meat. I will listen to my vet, not an add that pays for misinformation.
