ESPN had the telecast for the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers, October 3, 1993. Gary Thorne and Joe Morgan explained it all. Piazza did a couple of things.

I didn't know or remember that Gary Thorne and Joe Morgan continued to worked together over at ESPN back in the '90s. In 1989, they served as the #2 announcing team for ABC's "Thursday Night Baseball" telecasts, backing up Al Michaels, Jim Palmer, and Tim McCarver.

I'll list a few: - Overachievers. Even after getting Bonds, the Giants were seen by most magazines and oddsmakers as the 3rd-5th best team in the NL West, they were playing way above their heads. - Rivalry. With rivalry games, you throw out the record book. The situation was reversed in 1991 with the Dodgers in a tight divisional race with Atlanta and the Giants out of it a long time before then, they went up to San Francisco the last weekend of the season and lost. - Dusty Baker. For as much as he helped them overachieve compared to expectations, he became too reliant on their top pitchers and tired them out down the stretch.

The '93 Giants basically had a three-man rotation for the first half-John Burkett, Bill Swift, and Bud Black. Anything beyond that was a crapshoot(Trevor Wilson,Jeff Brantley[better as a reliever], and September acquistions Scott Sanderson and Jim Deshaies). Black was on the DL the last two months, which exposed the weakness in the rotation, while the Braves piled up victories. Dusty Baker continued to play his hunch after Torres picked up two wins shortly after joining the rotation, but, while the Giants went 14-4 to close the season, Torres took all of those losses.

@@BrianONEILL-qf2cs That's the other reason I'd list: Fred McGriff. The Braves were starting to pick it up coming out of the break but once they got him, they went full throttle and never looked back.

The 1993 season in Major League Baseball was the final year of two divisions in the American and National League. The N.L. West had the Atlanta Braves and S.F. Giants tied with 103 wins each. The Braves completed a four game sweep against the Rockies and the Giants endured a 12-1 thrashing by the Dodgers. The Braves would win the N.L. West for the final time going 104 and 58 while the Giants finished 103 and 59, one game out first place. The 103-59 record the Giants had in 1993 made them baseball's winningest to not qualify for the postseason. The 1980 Baltimore Orioles, went 100 and 62, and finished in second place, to the A.L. Eastern Division Champion N.Y. Yankees, who were three games better at 103 and 59. The Dodgers defeating the Giants 12 to 1, evened their record at 81 and 81 improving by 18 games after finishing the 1992 season in last place with only 63 victories.

I always liked watching Kevin Gross throw. He had a great windup and follow through. Piazza was huge in this game.

The last REAL race in baseball history. I miss the old Western and Eastern Champs meeting in the LCS. No Wild Cards and rewards for not winning a Division Championship.

What a way to close out the last true Division race, Before the wild card came out, The following year in 1994, But technically not till 1995, 1994 season was canceled

Absolutely -- your remote control got a workout switching between the baseball, the battle for Mogadishu (Black Hawk Down), and the state of emergency in Moscow with the attack on the TV station.

I guess this was the Dodgers' way of getting payback against the Giants, who helped the Braves win the NL West back in 1991.
