While it's known as a great practice tool, the Zoom B1x4 is also a capable all-in-one pedal that's actually pretty good for live performances. I'll show you the patch I built and how I used it for a 70's themed rock show.

Thanks for the most instructional video I've seen on KZfaq. I first came across your channel for the "How to sound like.." videos and loved your style. I'm a newbie bass player and have been wading through the sea of pedal and DI reviews and was pleased to see this video on your channel. What I wasn't expecting was to learn how much you were able to achieve with just using your onboard tone control, picking/plucking and hand position on the bass and how this enabled you to cover a wide range of music genres so effortlessly. Inspirational. And a great insight into using the B1 Four. For someone like me just starting out, it looks like it the perfect tool and it means I don't need to spend almost as much on a higher end pedal as my bass cost

I've got the Zoom B3 (slightly older model than this). I gig with it all the time and I've ditched my other pedals. At a gig all you need to do is set up your amp, plug in the pedal, plug your bass into your pedal and you're ready to go. The B3 only allows 3 pedals to run simultaneously but some of the presets have 2 sounds combined. What I really like is the built-in tuner, especially as if you press and hold the tuner is activated and the amp is muted, great for between sets as I usually check the tuning at the start of the set and then unmute and I'm ready to go.

Very appreciated. The layout, order, and fxs you used sounded very appropriate for when and where you used them. Navigating the zoom's can be more involved than desired. Zoom fan here. Used to gig my B1-Four in a similar way, as 5 separate effects. A little clunky if I wanted to turn an effect on and off during a song, but really, what mattered most was how it sounded, which was fine.

Yeah, that’s always the trade off. It’s not as elegant and easy to use as individual pedals, but it is a lot smaller and lighter than a full pedalboard. For gigs where I only need an effect or two, the Zoom does just fine.

Nice to see someone else who runs a Zoom B1x4 into a Rumble 500! :) I found that the B1x4 comes preloaded with a lot of very usable patches right out of the box. I also have the Zoom B3 and Line6 Bass Pod. They were mostly preloaded with exaggerated sample patches to illustrate the capabilities - I had to design my own patches with both of the latter to get something usable on stage. Instead of using the up/down pedals in edit mode - I like to sandwich my base patch (compressor,amp,cabinet) between a copy with a Flanger and a copy with an overdrive (or whatever "special effects" I might need). This way, you can easily use the Flanger by selecting the adjacent patch. You could even use the expression pedal (with it linked to the drive control of the overdrive patch) and the you'd only need 2 patches.

I appreciate this video - there's lots out there about the quality of the effects, but few people talk about practically using this device during a show. B1 Four is something but B3n is superior and I do not exactly know why. I gigged with B1 Four on a professional stage, going directly to PA. Then, I bought B3n, and set it up with the same settings as in my B1 Four (only compressor and amp sim without cabin). The sound guy did not know I changed my processor. He just wanted me to tweak the master a bit. (B1 Four was 80%, and I had to decrease B3n to 50%. At the end of the gig, he said "your tone was really good today, went very good with the drum kick".

Alas it ruins the tone IMHO. The older B1 coloured the sound less.

May I ask something quite stupid 😅, how do you power your zoom during the live? Thank youuu
@ampthebassplayer

Not a stupid question at all! I use a OneSpot power supply when I use it live. When I’m on the road, I use a USB power bank though. Makes it more portable.

How do you switch individual effect pedals on and off with the Zoom on the floor while playing? With your foot? I can't do it efficiently as these buttons are tiny. Am I missing something?
@ampthebassplayer
@ampthebassplayer Жыл бұрын
Yes, there is a stompbox mode that makes the big black foot switches select a pedal and turn it on/off respectively. Just hit the edit button on the left until you can see all your pedals in a row.

thanks for the video. Is there a way to turn a patch on and off with the pedal? I only want an effect for part of the song. I would need to do this for several patches that I would use on parts of a few songs.
@ampthebassplayer
@ampthebassplayer Жыл бұрын
Two ways you can do this. 1. Have a whole patch that you switch to from your normal patch 2. Turn on the individual pedals within a patch. If you need more than one thing turned on at the same moment, then option 1 is better. Otherwise, option 2 is fine.

@@ampthebassplayer Thanks, but that wont work for me since I have a few different patches I'd work through. I figured out there's no way to bypass the whole patch with this pedal other than jumping to a clean patch, but that's an issue if you use more than one patch. I ended up using a bypass stomp box switch so I can go from my clean tone to a patch on or off. Thanks!

You could have blank or empty patch and that would work like a bypass.

Quick question, can you make the b1x4 as audio interface? like, can I record directly to my computer or phone using the b1x4?

Hi! Is there a difference in sound between b1four and b2 four models or is the difference only in performance?

I’m not sure. I haven’t yet gotten my hands on the B2 to compare.

I have a question, if using this live are you plugging it in to your bass amp? And how do you set your equaliser on the amp if you do so? Do you set the equaliser 'flat' and use the zoom to control the tone?
@ampthebassplayer
@ampthebassplayer 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I put the Zoom between my bass and the amp which is a Rumble 500. It tends to be a bit bass heavy, so I roll that off on the amp's EQ, but it's flat otherwise.
