It's a damn shame this man isn't mentioned in the same breath with a great many of the finest songwriters and recording artists of his time or since. Along with Brian Jackson. Two wonderful artists who together made some brilliant music on some truly fine albums. This is some divine stuff, people.

" I saw him go to pieces" was my theme in life for too long. My life was in pieces because of bad habits. I use to say that I was in fractions; fractions of a man long before I heard this compelling, enlightening song of life. When I stop my destructive lifestyle and not only felt but experience my life coming together, finding inner peace, that's when I discovered by mistake mind you- "Pieces of a Man" by Gil Scott-Heron and thought this song is about my life and how God has given me a chance to put all the pieces together. Yes this song brings tears of joy and sadness, not only about my life but the many people who because of certain situations saw their life break into Pieces. But it's never too late to put your Pieces of a Man (or Woman) back together again and never forget the words, music of this beautifully constructed song by the late, great Gil Scott-Heron.

Gil didn't have the great material success of other musical artists of the late 20th century because the feds had it out for him. His political lyricism couldn't be co-opted and posed a real threat. This idea that he was "troubled" comes from the media coverage of his run ins with the law. It appeals to liberal racists, but it also functions as a threat, "see what happens to even the most talented if they insist on politicizing everything." When, for instance, DemocracyNow says "He was so brave" it means "He was so foolish to think of challenging the power and all-seeing might of the empire."

@@BurstVesselsI can see where a song like “Whitey On The Moon” would threaten the political establishment and make him a target. I’m white but I can understand the truth in every word of the song. Gil was troubled because he saw how the corrupt racist system was never going to treat black people as equal to the elitist establishment. No matter how much he wrote about it, nothing was going to change. Are black people really better off now than 50 years ago? How much bigger a piece of the pie have they gotten? From one slice to three?

I was born late to the party. But his music was such an important part of my life, i just can't put into words. Before/During/After, this man was a Prophet, a Visionary, more than a Racial Activist, a Musical Genius, Ahead of his Time, a Handsome, Beautiful man. R.I.P. There will never be an equal. Luv u Mr. Heron💯

@@carrion-fairy No need to read anything on anything I know who Gil Scott Heron is, His father was the first black player to play in the Scottish Football league. The point is that nothing, absolutely nothing in this song is unique to any race. It is the struggles of a working family. Now fuck off you sanctimonious virtue signaller.
