Part of the reason Kirk Hinrich made the team is because they wanted a defensive PG. One of the embarrassing losses in the 2004 Olympics was to Puerto Rico when Carlos Arroyo lit them up. In general, the 2006 team was made in response to the weaknesses of 2004. They grabbed non-all-stars to fill team needs because the 2004 team had far too many redundancies and holes.

As an old school basketball fan, I'd like to hear Gilbert Arenas opinion on the 2014 Spurs and how they cooked Bron and Wade in the finals. That was how old school 60s and 70s teams won, to see that style beat players of that stature and see how today's stars can't replicate that style keeps the argument alive that old school teams would be competitive with the right coaching.

@@michaelmayers3622 The Spurs would have also won the previous final if they didn't run out of steam. Miami didn't really win that final but the Spurs *gave* it away. On top of that Miami still needed the best 3P shooter to get it at the last shot. The only convincible title win by LeBron at Miami was against OKC and that season was shorter with no training camp which was an advantage for the younger teams. Spurs were no anomaly in 2012-2014. They played fantastic team basketball these 2 seasons.

@scholariffic8055 But considering Tim Duncan is 37 years old and the leading scorer on that team was Tony Parker with 16.7 points. Lebron james was the 1st option that year so that's no excuse to get beat that badly. The Spurs team wasn't as deep. what if Larry bird who averaged 28-10-6-1-1 was on that team or Wilt playing that style? It would have been worse because they're better players.

He could have replaced kirck Heinrich. Kirck is a better defender then gil ask wade and stephen jackson if you think im bs ing and thats what it probably came to in coach K mind, that and he felt joe and gilbert could do the same thing and if you watch those games battier was the best 3pt corner man and he did that job well when playing. The 2nd best would probably be joe and gilbert if he was on. it came down to those 2 players on why gilbert didn't get on the roster of 12 shits tough espically for guards ask rondo for 2012 usa team, but at the end of the day, your building court synergy not collecting names

@Beanz06 was a very good player averaged 20 and 18 in a time where most games finished In the 80 and 90's and early 100's points were hard to come by but then again it looks like you were born in 06 so you wouldn't know

Antawn Jamison is a career 18.5ppg scorer. Brad Miller was an All Star and prior to Arenas's tryout, the last selfish point guards (Iverson and Marbury) led team usa to a damn bronze. Yes Gilbert was a scoring Machine, but teams dont win gold medals and championships with GUNNNNING point guards. His approach has always been wrong and thats why he never experienced much playoff success..

tellin Gil at that time that he was in the bubble of makin Team USA amongst the players that made the team is DISRESPECTFUL. Gil was HOF talent that got cut short because of injuries and his ego too 😂.

His "Mamba mentality" probably got him booted off...He deserved to be on the team, but Arenas was wanting to kill people, he was so aggressive on offense that the coaches thought he was detrimental.
