Part 2 of my DIY vest/ undershirt/top tutorial. I show you how to coverstitch the neckline and armholes -or, if you prefer: how to topstitch the neckbands and armhole finishing bands with a coverstitch
I'm using a self-drafted pattern, but here are some links to free top patterns you can use:

In this series of tutorials I use Juki MO6714 DA industrial overlocker and Juki MCS coverstitch machine.
The fabric is 96% cotton/4% spandex French terry (240gsm), the ribbing is cotton with 2% spandex (260gsm)

So happy that you did this video. I have the same coverstitch machine and it's been driving me up the wall. I thought steppers were to put in front or behind machine feet for bumps. Never occurred to me to put one along the side. What a great idea. Thank you so much. Aileen 😀😀😀😀

Thank you ♥️ I use the strip of plastic in this video as a compensating foot equivalent 😉 you can use it as a hump jumper as well (put it under the back of the foot ) or use it to lift the front of the foot 😁 I should have explained it better in the video but I hadn't planned to talk about the strip of plastic 🤣🤣🤣 but it's super versatile and I use it a lot (and it's free!!!) 😁 x

What a great idea to use strapping web as a seam jumper!

Great vlog Alex! I have a couple of binder attachments but I do use them either! Like you I use the needle positioning marks on my machine to guide me. What a great idea to use the plastic as a hump jumper, my CPX2000 does struggle a bit over very bulky seams. I do love that Juki 😍😍😍😍😍

Thank you Lynne ♥️ I use the double fold binder (the big one, with a rake) on my babylock but it's not always perfect, so I need far more practice 🤣 and yes, the juki is quite a machine, I absolutely adore her (mine is called Erica 😉) x

Beautiful coverstitching, Alex! I also find hand wheeling whilst topstitching helpful for a much neater finish. Do you pull the threads to the underside of the garment before trimming them? Thank you for the links to the free top patterns. 😊

Thank you Laura ♥️ I have another video with all the steps for finishing the coverstitch (with a very short summary at the end), so it's basically that the threads are all pulled to the wrong side by the machine and they are secure - but I still tie a knot and bury the tails in the seam allowance (in the stitches) . The other video is called How to start/finish and unpick coverstitch (I can't link anything in the comments, sorry) x

@@laurajones4088 nothing silly here, I don't remember most things I see once 🤣🤣🤣 it's just that the finish is very easy to show, but not easy to describe without showing 😉

Thats a really clever use of those plastic straps from Amazon! I would never have thought to level the side of the foot, but I have wadded up some cardboard at the back a few times. I tend to hand crank through. You have done such a neat job and I learned how to finish neatly! Is just one overlap stitch enough? Change of subject, have you made Polish Gotabki? I watch a Canadian-Polish cook (yt) but have never tried her recipe. I’ve made them for years (church friend’s recipe)but I’m looking for a better flavor recipe. If you do make them, what spices do you use?

Thank you Janice ♥️ I make vegetarian gołąbki 😉 with porcini mushrooms 😁 but I'll find my grandma's recipe and translate it for you. The cabbage is important, it needs to be proper cabbage not some hipster novelty one 🤣 and I know you need pork mince to keep it nice and moist (beef on it's own is too dry) and sticky rice. I use lots and lots and lots of freshly ground pepper, bay leaves (to be fished out before mincing the meat) and white onions. But I'll find a proper recipe for you ♥️ x

Gingerhead & Co I wouldn’t use pork, but possibly ground turkey, portobello mushrooms sounds good!

@@janicek6399 I think traditional Polish recipes are not very cholesterol friendly 🤣 saturated fat might just be something we are genetically predisposed to like ( no obesity because of cold winters and quite an active lifestyle- that's my theory 🤣🤣🤣) Pork is popular in Poland and even though my generation (and younger ones) is far more health conscious, our cuisine is definitely very hearty and keeps you satisfied for a long time 😉 even though I'm a lifelong veggie I can't imagine a meal without fat (and I eat loads of nuts), I'd just be hungry without fat 🤣 fortunately, instead of lard I use rapeseed oil so maybe I won't die of a heart attack 😉

Gingerhead & Co we also eat lots of healthy fats😛 and nuts, but not vegetarian. A legacy of food allergy to pork from my (English) grandma. 😋And probably back through her parents because they couldn’t eat pork either. This grandma raised pigs for income but didn’t eat any pork or lard.

I can’t believe how much the JUKI can handle!
@GingerheadCo

Yep, they are definitely top machines 😁 I don't think their marketing is great (juki is better known for making industrial machines and being a sub contractor for some domestic overlockers in the past) but I'm so glad I decided to try my first juki (and there's no going back for me 🤣)

Nice tutorial! Does it comes a clear presser foot so easy to see and connect the beginning and end of the stitch of garment , when you buy this machine or need to buy separaty?
@GingerheadCo
@GingerheadCo 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't come with a clear foot, when you look closely at the foot here you'll notice it has grooves with needle positions marked on foot, it's also composed of connected parts (it's not one cast metal foot) so it provides a lot of compensation. You can actually buy a clear foot (though not in the UK, I'm not sure if it's genuine Juki or generic) but I really doubt it would be in any way better. I mainly use a industrial coverstitch now but I still think the little Juki mcs1500 has the best foot I've ever used.

What about the threads on the inside? Do you clip them or knot them?
@GingerheadCo
@GingerheadCo 3 жыл бұрын
I overlap the last stitch with the first, lock the stitches by pulling them to the inside (I made a whole video on how to start and finish coverstitching ) and clip. You can make a knot of course but I’ve never had a hem unravelled when it’s finished like that.

Do you find that accessories and/or feet for other makes fit this machine? Juki apparently don’t make a dedicated see-through foot but I wonder if it would be an advantage for top stitching.
@GingerheadCo
@GingerheadCo 4 жыл бұрын
I got a double fold binder for Juki from Sweden, I don't need a clear foot (I really like this one, the one that is on my machine) and I don't think they make any extra feet as yet. The binders for babylock are for my other coverstitch (and I don't use them very often) - for me, the only useful 'extra' so far is the double folded bias binding attachment but I'm still not perfect at using it 🤣🤣🤣

i have same machine,can i use serger thread for it do you think is ok for elastic fabric to use serger thread
@GingerheadCo
@GingerheadCo 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, use the best quality you can find, but the big cones can easily be used both for serging and coverstitching (mine is 100 % polyester, oeko certified overlocker thread)
