CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Lisa (Angelina Jolie) reads Susanna's diary (Winona Ryder) to anger the other girls and push Susanna over the edge.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In 1967, 19-year-old Susanna (Winona Ryder) feels that "reality is becoming too dense" and is diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. The doctor suggests to her parents that she be committed to the Claymore Hospital, and she spends the next 18 months struggling with her troubled psyche and the bizarre world of the institution. Susanna bonds with several other patients, including Lisa (Angelina Jolie), Polly (Elizabeth Moss), and Georgina (Clea DuVall). As she realizes that Lisa is potentially dangerous and truly needs help, Susanna begins to work harder with her psychiatrist (Vanessa Redgrave) and the nurse on the ward (Whoopi Goldberg). But Susanna soon learns that getting out of the hospital is not as easy as getting in. Girl, Interrupted was based on the autobiography of Susanna Kaysen, who really did spend a year-and-a-half in the McLean Psychiatric Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts.

Lisa and Susanna are two sides of the same coin. They see people and their truths. Lisa just weaponizes it.

Exactly. I've seen so many comments talking about how Lisa is so real...and I mean she is, but not in a good way. She doesn't try to care. And yeah, maybe Susanna wrote some potentially hurtful things...that she never intended for anyone to ever actually see. That's the difference between Lisa and Susanna: they both tell the truth as they see it, but Susanna keeps her opinions to herself while Lisa doesn't care who gets hurt in the process.

Dionne Daniels I think that had to do with Susana saying that to her. Susana is Lisa’s best friend after Jaime died. I think that’s what hurt Lisa the most. Also it probably pissed Lisa off that Susan wrote everything down instead of telling the truth. Overall, Susana is the real villain in this scene. Lisa said it very clear “so nice of you to pass judgement now that you’re ‘cured’”
@bloodymary7651

Februarysblog I agree, Susanna was pretty mean for writing criticisms about the others, especially the part about Polly. Lisa was a top villainess, you love and hate her! Yeah she can dish it out but can't take it when the tables are turned. People who are like that are pathetic. I doubt you'd feel good physically or mentally if you lived around someone like that day in day out. There is a reason people are kind to each other and don't go out of their way to make others feel like shit by making them look at all of life's hard truths 24/7. I get that Angelina Jolie is very sexy and all, but if Rosie O'Donnell (or someone else unattractive) played the character I doubt you'd have the same reaction. Just think about that for a second. Is it the character or Jolie's sexy enigmatic performance that makes you like her so much?

She's seen as "the bad guy" because she is a psychopath. You can be honest but without coldness and being cruel, sadistic and then push buttons that makes them suicidal. Who made her God to correct everyone's issues? Denial, is self preservation for what a person can handle at that moment, not everyone is capable of confronting that denial without losing their minds. What makes her wrong is that she thinks she has to control, change everyone who didn't sign up for such instead of accepting them for who they are, good or bad. Who gave her that authority?

Lisa’s intensity and seemingly having no emotions is just a mask to wear to disguise that her heart is too big for her body. She has to cut her self off from feeling remorse along with her other emotions because she is so sensitive and has been broken...perhaps from her childhood , perhaps from heredity, perhaps for not being loved and respected and accepted for exactly who she is through out her life. clearly been identified as someone emotionally unstable. Some people may be born not feeling for others but I believe Lisa’s character has a good heart. She is just damaged. :( Susanna’s opinion means so much to her. You can see how she crushes Lisa with her words by saying she would rather be out there in the crazy world then in the hospital with her.

@Aurora Nox I think she could have been borderline but that's just my theory. She could have had ASD in real life but the film's portrayal of her is way different than in the book. At that time in the '60s, there wasn't an emphasis on why Lisa acted out the way she did. She was less severe in the book. If someone diagnosed her today it could be different. She could have had traits of anti-social disorder and sociopathy but there was such a black-and-white view of mental diagnoses back then.

I think Lisa was speaking from a place of hurt and grief here though, especially with the scene that came right after. I really think she was tired of everything and maybe she truly cared about Susanna, which is exactly why it hurt to be used and labelled a villain by her. It was no different than what everyone else did (including her own parents). Lisa’s character is obviously more of the verbal fighter, and when she’s angry she stabs with her words (I think a lot of what she said was just plain abusive and nasty though throughout the movie), but at the same time I really just think Lisa needed better help, love and understanding. The needle scene and the ending of this movie made me hurt for her. I understand where she’s coming from.

There aren't many people who can accurately portray the pain of someone with the potential antisocial PD that Lisa was diagnosed with - contrary to popular belief, there are people on that spectrum who have feelings. Given the era, who knows what her true diagnosis was. Either way, Angelina is an unbelievably gifted actor.

Its weird how this movie is about mentally ill but makes you reflect on so called "Normal people". The movie shows us how dark & cold lisa is and how shes truly capable of being mean and the "Villain" ,And we come to that conclusion coz its soo evident & obvious coz she shows it. But what about us ? What about Sussana ? She was not a sociopath but she still was capable of being mean just like we all are. So aren't we the villains in a way too ? But nobody calls us that. Just because we hide it in our hearts,minds & journals. Sure we are not the extreme kinda mean but we could get there if it calls for it. Damn sociopaths must hate 'Normal people'. Wonder whos more scary here ? Atleast sociopaths come with a warning but normal people come with a big surprise & shock. Thats what lisa went thru in this scene

Angelina Jolie deserved an oscar for this performance and Lisa had her issues but she had vaild points and Lisa was the villian and she was more of a villian than Suzanna was. Suzanna wouldn't tell anyone to their faces what she really thought of them. Lisa did. Villians go from one extreme to the other and they don't lie they tell it like it is and Lisa did just that. She pushed Daisy's buttons and Daisy died b/c everyone knew about her and her father and Daisy wasn't cured she still lived in this small world of being protected by her father. That's why Lisa did what she did to Daisy. Lisa had control over the patients but Lisa had problems too. She was given electric shocks and treated horrible by society. I felt that. Angelina can play psycho so good. Angelina Jolie proved herself to be a good actress and she played Marianne Pearl in A Mighty Heart. Winona Ryder is a good actress and she was nominated for her role in Josephine March in Little Women and Winona Ryder was also in Bettlejuice and Heathers. Bram Stroker's Dracula in 1992. She is also in Stranger Things (TV)mini-series.

Lisa uses people’s weaknesses to her advantage or to just mentally toy with them for her own personal enjoyment. She’s a classic sociopath. Being honest is one thing, but using the truth to control people is a whole other thing. Lisa isnt “just being honest”, her intentions are selfish. That’s why I find Angelina Jolie’s performance so captivating! She shows how charming and influential a sociopath can be, but also how malicious they are as well. A great example of this would be with Daisy and her suicide. She convinces Daisy to let her into her home, and ultimately begins to mentally toy with Daisy for no other reason than to amuse herself. She enjoys manipulating others and lacks compassion and sympathy, while also holding grandiosity about herself. And when Susanna decides to distance herself from Lisa, Lisa rebuttals in trying to bring Susanna back down to her level of control, but Susanna ultimately decides to get better rather than accept her “fate” as a “lifer” like Lisa. She no longer has control over Susanna and becomes enraged by this. Angelina’s performance is amazing, and I think accurately depicts the depravity and surprising relatability of a sociopath. While we can see ourselves in Lisa in subtle ways, we also see her emotional detachment.

Obviously the book and the movie are completely different things. But I believe the portrayal of Angelina’s Lisa is correct. No matter how awful Lisa is the majority of the time, you still feel for her. I’ve seen a lot of talk that Lisa killed daisy... she didn’t. Daisy was failed by the system. So many things in that scene show how daisy was there. At her end, and Lisa told the truth. Now, obviously if anyone in daisys life would have done this in a proper setting maybe daisy would have lived.. it was a moment, Lisa was jealous of daisys freedom and snapped. Callous, cruel and vindictive.. it’s terrible but ultimately she’s not to blame. I feel for all characters in this film. I read the book way before seeing the film and there are a lot of discrepancies. I found the film used too much humour. Things to make people laugh at mental illness, but also stretching the truth a lot. However I still like the film because of the performances.
