CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Susanna (Winona Ryder) is tortured by Lisa (Angelina Jolie) to the point of breaking.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In 1967, 19-year-old Susanna (Winona Ryder) feels that "reality is becoming too dense" and is diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. The doctor suggests to her parents that she be committed to the Claymore Hospital, and she spends the next 18 months struggling with her troubled psyche and the bizarre world of the institution. Susanna bonds with several other patients, including Lisa (Angelina Jolie), Polly (Elizabeth Moss), and Georgina (Clea DuVall). As she realizes that Lisa is potentially dangerous and truly needs help, Susanna begins to work harder with her psychiatrist (Vanessa Redgrave) and the nurse on the ward (Whoopi Goldberg). But Susanna soon learns that getting out of the hospital is not as easy as getting in. Girl, Interrupted was based on the autobiography of Susanna Kaysen, who really did spend a year-and-a-half in the McLean Psychiatric Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts.

It's crazy to think how big Winona Ryder was around this time. With Beetlejuice, Heathers, Girl, Interrupted and even Edward Scissorhands. Winona Ryder was HUGE. A few scandals over here, some rumors over there, mixed with a shoplifting attempt caught all on camera. And she was almost never heard from again. Thank God she found Stranger Things. This movie touches the heart of mental health... basically, whatever you are struggling with, as long as you are feeding it and avoiding reality, you are dying. The only way you can live is if you stop feeding the disorder and firmly ground your life in reality. Otherwise you end up in both physical and mental imprisonment, like these women.

I used to think this scene was heartbreaking, but actually, it's a happy (albeit perverse) ending. Lisa was finally confronted by her demons, and this enabled her to be freed from them. She essentially begs Suzanna to "rip out the truth" and she does, having recently faced her own. I wish the move elaborated more, as in the book it is revealed that Suzanna bumps into Lisa a few years later down the line. Here, as a single mother, she is quirky but ultimately sane, and most importantly, cured.

Susanna delivers a cold hard truth, not just to Lisa but to the other girls. They are all "dying." Georgina probably wants to be normal, but her lying (if I'm understanding pathological lying) makes her life exciting and in an odd way "fun" that a normal life doesn't give her. Polly, for whatever genetic or environmental reasons, tricks herself into pretending she looks normal and may believe herself younger then she actually is. Whatever her reasons, Janet has unrealistic expectations on the way she looks. And Cynthia is attracted to other girls, but this is a time when same-sex relationships were mainly a behind closed doors secret. And Lisa...her tears prove she's not sociopathic at all because true sociopaths don't cry like Lisa did when Susanna slapped her with the truth. Lisa probably deluded herself to be a sociopath, likely because it gave her an identity or purpose. The girls are all stuck at the institute because they don't want to get better...because it would mean they have to face the harsh reality of who they really are. They, like Susanna had done, hurt themselves or others to try to kill the thing that kept them from fitting in with the real world. The movie may be dramatic, but the psychology behind it proves that these are all just girls, real human girls who are more complex then what they seem.

The most well done thing about this scene is that it destroys the common misconception that sociopaths are completely incapable of any form of feeling. Many people incorrectly think that. The truth is sociopaths physically cannot feel empathy, sympathy, or regret/guilt. However, they can cry for themselves, which is what Lisa is doing in this scene. It hurts them to not be able to feel, it hurts to be physically incapable of being empathetic and normal. Lisa is an evil person for sure but that is mainly because of her brains incapability to process remorse and whatnot, and that’s an awful feeling to be unable to control yourself in that way and thus practically unable to control if you’re a good person or not. Many sociopaths block this pain out, they refuse to see their actions and behaviors for what they are and continue to act them out, but if they’re truly confronted and called out in this way, especially the really bad sociopaths, will likely break down as she does not because they’re guilty or remorseful, but because they fear the way they can’t control themselves and are pained by the lack of empathy for other human beings that they feel.

Lisa shows here that she isn't dead, and she says that at the end. In the same way that sociopathic people can't empathize with others, empathic people can't really empathize with sociopaths because there's nothing there to feel or to find, or to love. That in itself is really cold, and for a sociopath to actually come to terms with that - I understand it would cause pain. Maybe I'm wrong, because Lisa was absolutely evil to Daisy. I had to watch this movie for my class, and I have a theory about Lisa. She was diagnosed with sociopathy/psychopathy but I believe she might have bipolar disorder. This scene seems like a mixed state, she has the energy from her mania but self loathing and depression at the same time. She also engaged in grandiose plans like an attempt to escape to Florida which point to bipolar mania. And if you notice, they say she breaks out of the hospital every few weeks. This would be consistent with her cycling into full blown mania every few weeks which motivates her to break out. Also there is a scene where she is in her room sobbing uncontrollably on the floor, which could be when she cycled to depression. I feel like this movie didn't accurately portray the diagnoses they gave the patient, but Angelina Jolie gave a great performance. I can see why she won the Oscar.

Did anyone notice that this is referencing her time traveling? The beginning of the movie started with the doctor asking her how she reached for the pill bottle if all of the bones in her hand were broken, and she asked him how she was supposed to explain to a doctor that time can move forward and backwards and what goes up doesn't always go down. She asked a therapist in the middle of the movie if she thought she might have ESP or something. My mind is blown, I realized this recently even though I've seen this movie a bazillion times.

Lisa is a sociopath even if she cries. She cries for herself not for the other. Sociopath can still show emotions
@taracollins5597
@taracollins5597 Ай бұрын
I'm not entirely sure if Lisa was a sociopath. She was cruel often, yes. Manipulative, definitely. But you see certain subtle clues that show she may not be soulless. In the strongest scene, you see Lisa using a hand-puppet to try to cheer up a depressed patient & she says soothingly "Don't be sad. Don't be sad!" Also, when Susanna wanted private-time with her boyfriend, Lisa tries her best to run interference for her by blocking the nurse's way. Lastly, even after her callous comments about Daisy's suicide, she puts the cash IN SUSANNA'S POCKET & leaves anyway. I think Lisa was mean, but also a heavily-damaged girl who was very jealous of the patients around her having families that cared.....so instead of risking being a kind person, she became the bully instead.

@taracollins5597
@taracollins5597 21 күн бұрын
@@CicoinTokyo777 Actually, sociopaths cannot feel empathy. That is why the diagnosis of sociopathy exists, why they are classified as a sociopath. They care about no one but themselves. Psychopathology is different. Some psychopaths are also sociopaths. But not always, as weird as that is. Some psychopaths CAN feel limited empathy or even affection.

I can totally recognize Suzannas BPD here. Because at one point Lisa was her Favorite person. She idealized her. And the second she turns on her she gets even colder than she is. This is known as splitting and it catches people off guard cuz here you were obsessed and inlove with someone and they hurt you all the sudden you switch and go cold. I do this alot. Very relateable

I hate when people say sociopaths dont cry. My brothers a diagnosed sociopath and ive seen him cry many times ! However they may not cry at what makes "normal" people cry such as deaths , funerals , ect. They may think things like that are funny. Alot of the times they can tolerate alot of phyical pain but mentaly can not handle pain or the truth which causes a breakdown! If you or I saw a kitten being flung across the living room we would be scared / sad and try to help wheres a sociopath would think its funny .
