@@allywong9675 It's a bit blurry and the two often are very close together and many movies are kinda both, though often one more than the other. If you ask me, the main goal of horror is to interact with the audience through the emotion of fear - if you are scared, unsettled, disturbed or disgusted, there are likely at least some horror elements in there. Thrillers on the other hand work with suspense and keep you on the edge of your seat as to what happens next. In short, in thrillers you want to know what comes next, in horror movies you dread what comes next. But like I said, it's hard to make a clear cut distinction between the two and I wouldn't see my comment as the only interpretation.

And, during the dancing scene, what’s so strange is that I believe they all wanted Dani to win so she would feel this sense of pride and power which would lead to her believing she is more important. It would causes Dani than to subconsciously make the decision to go full in but it technically wasn’t really her. Basically they had put the idea in her head so she would think it was all her choice to stay and be a part of this fully. It’s a masterpiece and a disgusting movie in and of itself

I love this movie and that there is so much discussion about it. Also, I love it that ALL the characters are morally ambiguous. Hårgas are a cult and and they wanted Dani to be May Queen. They manipulated the events so that they could advance Christian and Dani to break up. This is what cults do in real life - destroy old relationships in order to get people in. This was made possible, because they are BOTH confused, both having their issues and lack of direction. But I'm amazed that people consider Dani innocent...hello, she took part in choosing a human sacrifice, when the morally / ethically choice would to refuse?? It's a horror movie but people are pretty messed up if they don't see that... I don't think what Christian does can be called "gaslighting" - but he's still being quite spineless and manipulative, but more out of instinct rather than any plan. Video about Gaslighting and Midsommar: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bpiPlr2Akr7apYk.html Who is acting out of a plan, are the Hårgas. They want to break-up Dani and Christian. They create the environment where he feels like an outsider, and she feels like she belongs there. This is a point I haven't seen been mentioned often: when they make Dani choose the final sacrifice- in what condition is Christian? Unable to SAY ANYTHING. Dani is angry at him, justifiably, but at a man who the Hårgas have made paralyzed and unable to speak. And they want Dani to be freshly heartbroken, so he would pick Christian- because doing so, she is made accomplice to the killing. That's her TRUE FINAL RITE into the Hårgas. Not the fabricated theatre of May Queen crowning, but making her take active part in choosing sacrifices. In that moment, she's liberated, but also insane. Is Christian a shitty boyfriend? Yes. Should they break-up? Yes. Should Dani choose a sacrifice? No. She should have either picked the Hårga man or flat-out refuse to choose ANYONE as a sacrifice. People idolising Dani somehow seem to overlook this lol. "You go girl, be held and find a new home, take part in human sacrifices!" Is a new side shown out of Dani in the end? Yes, but it's partly because she's gone insane. The original script literally describes the smile as insane, as liberation that the insane only can feel. She has lost everything and she's made to choose a sacrifice- a sacrifice that she's also being manipulated into. And she is now in the control of the Hårgas after that. She's taken part into their murders. The suit made out of flowers is a perfect metaphor: they shower her with love, but wanting to imprison her. She's so overwhelmed with the flowers it's hard for her to move. They welcome her "home", because as the only blond female of the group, she's the perfect baby making machine for their blood lines. A pregnant woman has more trouble to escape as well. And this is why I love this movie even more than Hereditary: it's even more psychological, doesn't require supernatural aspects- and it's core strength is at what is IMPLIED even more than what is actually shown. That is powerful. NEITHER Dani or Christian are innocent. Neither are they guilty. They are lost, confused pawns and neither find any true liberation in the end. One loses his life, one loses their soul, sanity and individuality. There's a chance she will adjust but that is left open. I think it's a perfect ending to a horror movie. The character that has lost the most, has also become part of something truly sinister.

I love Trin even though I just subscribed two days ago after watching her with Pretty Much It, but she is hilarious and relatable and those people who say otherwise can just leave, literally exit out of the video if you don't like it, it's easier to do than having to type up a whole hate comment...lol

in seriousness though, the film is so poignant. In the beginning, danni had no support, no love, no one to turn to who really meant it. And by the end, she does. She has a community. She’s surrounded by people that care about her and that’s why she’s smiling by the end. This emphasises the power of the cult. They used her trauma to make her stay and persuade her into thinking exactly what i just talked about

I like how you mentioned that the movie is light, yet somehow it's scarier that way. I think it has to do with the fact that since we associate the dark with spooks we tend to feel better/safe when it's light again. However when everything scary happens in broad daylight we don't have that mental safety net. Bad things can still happen when it's light out and you're in a field of flowers. There is no where you can go that will make you feel safe. Anyway, that's my hot take as to why Midsommar is so scary :D

The "dancing until you drop" thing comes from a legend about that village. A bard came to the village of Horga to play at their village dance. When the old folks of the village had gone to bed the tune changed and the young people started dancing like crazy. They all danced to death and the bard disapeared. He was in fact The Devil. Oh, and the hung up in the ceiling with his organs out is a viking method of execution called "Carving a blood eagle". They believed that if the condemned could bear it without uttering a sound he would be welcome into Valhalla and his disgrace would be forgotten.

I honestly loved Midsommer. It was a great cinematic experience. Hereditary was also amazing but the thing that makes Midsommar scarier than Hereditary is definitely the fact that Midsommar solely relies on the dark and twisted human nature rather than Hereditary which dives into the supernatural. It gave me chills, but simply because it's not something that is impossible, but also because it's highly believable. Not everyone believes in the supernatural, but everyone can believe in the dark cultic nature of some people.

Trin Lovell it does seem like it Should be considering everything else in the movie. a lot of people said that part always feels like it doesn’t fit completely in the movie but I think it was just so Dani wouldn’t have a family so she would be more vulnerable to the cult 🤷🏼‍♀️

@@LovellTrin i just realized the original comment said "Trin" but I read Dani omg. Lol in ur defense it never outright says the sister did it but the context clues of Dani mentioning her sister's mental health & then her worrying over emails are the context clues.
