My favourite plant is Wisteria. It grows daily quickly but not like other faster growing plants. After a few months the Wisteria in my community tank has grown out into the substrate and it starting to grow up. And you can take lots of cuttings from it and it will quickly start to grow back. I have it in three tanks and all of my fish like it.

A few years into a RCS/MTS tank my Anubias Barteri grows a new leaf every few months directly under a 5000K LED bulb light with a dense mat of Salvinia and Duckweed on the surface. It's flowered a few times too. All I have in my shrimp tank is Anubias and Java Fern which both thrive. I can't seem to keep the Java Moss though. I fertilize once a month (all in one and micros) and throw crushed coral in the tank once a year to counter (dechlorinated) soft water but no other treatments. Love your videos Irene!

A piece of advice that has worked out for me so hopefully helps you as well. I joined the fish clubs in my area and got lucky enough to run into someone online that only lived 10mins from me and has his own fish room and has so many plants he has to trim he just throws out what would be 100s if dollars worth of plants every other week. He just gave me giant handfuls of different kinds so if I do kill it, it won't be money down the drain. So definitely check out local fish FB groups. You could get lucky like that!

Great list Irene! I had the same problem with my crypt tropica- added potassium for java ferns and the crypt looked like I froze it. It was doing well before that, but has struggled ever since (over a year). My corydoras keep uprooting my crypt parva, so I don't recommend it in tanks with busy bottom dwellers. I can grow dwarf aquarium lily the best, do pretty well with pogo, but I can't get an anubias to live for more than 3 days before their perfectly healthy rhizomes turn to gelatinous ooze. I've tried several varieties from several great sources. Everyone says they're impossible to kill... I seem to be highly skilled at it.

your advice about java ferns and potassium is right on, supplementing with potassium really helps them thrive!! (i'm convinced this is why the seachem potassium bottle has a java fern on it hahaha). i've had good results with java ferns dosing (alternate days) potassium, easy green, and phosphorous (since i don't feed flake food). my other nominations for this list (as someone who has killed several octopus plants) would be emersed pothos (in HOB filters, etc) or emersed bamboo, with the only caveat being that they are nutrient gluttons and will starve other plants (mosses/java fern) if you aren't supplementing fertilizer. they do seem unkillable, though.

I started my 29 gal. aquarium in mid-January (2022) using Eco Complete substrate (black) plus added root tabs in a grid as I distributed the substrate. I started with Cabomba, elodea, jungle val, dwarf sagittaria, and dwarf hairgrass, and Pogostemon stellatus ‘octopus’. Of these, only the dwarf sagittaria has survived and is thriving. Have two stems left of the pogostemon, but very slow to grow and doesn't want to stay in the substrate. So, in frustration I bought several bunches of hornwort (way too much!) which can't be killed, several Crypt undulatus (similar to the lucens), and 3 small anubias. The only problem with the crypts initially was keeping them planted. However, after about a month with these new plants, all are thriving with very little melting. My crypts are absolutely thriving and growing. I use only a low to medium level hood light (kit) and no CO2. All are doing well, but the hornwort can get a bit unwieldy. But, really has helped keep H20 parameters in good stead, only having to do water changes every 2 weeks now. Love live plants! Thanks for your great videos, Irene!

I have the Octopus plant (I like to call it that since I cant spell or pronounce the scientific name) and I bought 5 of them when they were small and after a few months in my sorority tank, it had grown really huge and the bettas love them to bits and they look great as they grow taller and lush and beautiful. I didnt use a fertilizer since I used to have a lot of females and they had some platies which poop a lot and they feed my plants partnered with the sunlight it gets since its on my balcony made it grow massive.

I just bought a bunch of plants online and boy, most were a lot down. I bought 3 dwarf grass carpets and it all arrived brown and flattened. I bought some amazon frogbit... all brown. I've spent hundreds on a new 5 gallon I was going to use specifically for aquascaping and it's not going too well. I have a bunch of plants thrown in with my gourami to keep them safe, and a half filled 10 gallon keeping the carpet and floating plants safe (as well as trying to soak some wood to keep it from floating xD). I just hope it's worth it in the end. Hopefully the carpet eventually revives itself, but I'm thinking the frogbit is a goner... Not sure if I should try either of them again EVEN THOUGH I didn't kill them and they arrived like that. I wish my "local petstore" (which happens to be a Petco, sadly, and even that is a bit of drive for me) had floating plants to buy.

Bolbitis heudelotii should be on the list as well. But if you don't grow it with CO2 injection, you need to grow it under lowlight/shade if you don't want it to become an algae farm. Pelia moss should be pretty easy as well. Easier than any regular moss in my case. Another one that i haven't grown personally but was recommended by tons of people is Sagittaria subulata. It's almost unkillable, unless you intentionally kill it. Lucas from LRB Aquatics had one that was still alive after weeks without a dedicated light source. Lucas also practically didn't do any water changes on his tanks.

I'm pretty sure that mystery anubias in sonic's tank is either bartini or goldcoin.

so funny because there is basically only three plants that I can't keep alive - java fern, crypts, and anubias, LOL In my area the water is soft and on the high end of pH. What grows easy in my water from your list is the octopus, water lily bulb, frogbit. Plus any kind of sword plant, banana plant from bulb, and for moss - suswasertang. I'm sure I spelled that wrong, but it grows like crazy in my water and the shrimp and rasboras love it.

I added 5 Frogbits, now it covers half of the surface. Bad thing is those Frogbits have no long roots because my Angelfish love eating them and they always grow new shoots.

Meanwhile, my cryptocoryne wendtii brown are taking over my tank and my dwarf lily hasn't grown back yet after I trimmed it massively last month. The crypt roots are everywhere, and they even push up my dwarf hairgrass. I guess it's got something to do with what nutrients are in the water. My substrate is black sand with root tabs and my water is moderately hard.

My Bolbitis h is only two weeks into my new aquarium, and plantlets are growing off the spores. What do you recommend?

Hello. Can these plants be planted directly into the substrate? Also, will they survive with my African Cichlids and two mystery snails?

I am surprised that Bucephalandra is not on your list. In my experience, it is just as easy as Anubias. ;-)

I can speak to crypt parva. I have one that's been in my tank for a whole year. It hasn't died back... But it also hasn't grown any. It might have put out two leaves in the whole time.

I killed my anubis nana petite, but I've been able to keep a java fern alive. I also planted dwarf sag and it has covered the whole bottom of the tank, with no co2.

What is the algae eater at the 7:10 mark? It's really going to town on the java fern! Thanks!

Hi! I new to live plants and need a refresher for fish. I just got a marina led 10g with a marina s15 filter. ?s. Can I use the sponge filter I saw in your tank? Instead of the filter I have and still keep a crystal clear fish tank. Cause those throw away filter cartridges are expensive to get every to weeks. Can I use that kind sponge filter with multiple plants that are placed in the background. I have a self controlled heater. I got colored rock for bottom. But I was thinking about the tan-ish brown rock they sell at PetSmart. Cause I want a natural look with the tan-ish brown rock. But like said I'm new to the live plants stuff. I did start up the tank for 3 days but I had to break it down. Cause I didn't know what I was doing. I'm 54 trying something new. I've had fish in the past in a 40gal which was 16yrs ago. I will add fish later of course. So ? I have is will the gravel colored,, tan or brown from PetSmart work? What kind of plants will work with that led light that came with the tank it's a starter fish tank kit. Can I put lava rock and artificial drift wood from the PetSmart or Petco in tank? Since the tank has been broke down. What order do I put the stuff in before fish. Cause it will be like a month before fish will be in it. Due to prices go up it's expensive. I know I put stuff down as a base then decor but after that idk. Do I add some water to add the plants into the locations I want them. Then fill the tank up and from there IDK. So I could use your feedback on my issues and concerns I have. Help prime time aquatics

I think maybe crypts do well in hard water. I ave super hard water that kills a lot of plants but my Crypt Wendtii and Crypt Balansea never melted and are thriving.

Thank you so much for this. I'm new to this and I'm stating a 5.5 gallon tank and wanted to plant it. Also is it possible to put a betta with 5 or 6 tetras in a 5.5 gallon?

In addition to the high bioload that stocking level would give you, which would be hard to manage in such a small tank, tetras are pretty active fish. They need room to move, and 5-6 would be on the small side for a school. And nowhere for them to run if your betta turns out to be on the aggressive side. I would probably go with at least a 20 gallon if I was going to try tetras and betta together.

Curtains to cover all the lights that are reflecting. Most KZfaqrs have a stand with a dark curtain that they hang in front of their tanks for filming

Thank you so much! Yeah, I usually film at night and turn off all the lights around the tank to try to avoid reflections, but sometimes I have to film in the daytime and I always forget to close the curtains or turn off a light, etc. Since I film myself talking during the daytime, it bugs me that you can see my tripod in the tank reflection!
