Give Me An Answer with Stuart & Cliffe Knechtle

10 жыл бұрын

DescDescriptionCliffe Knechtle has a good dialogue with students at The University of Arizona - Tucson. Recorded in October 2012.
The "Give Me An Answer" ministry began as an outgrowth of the dialogues Cliffe Knechtle has had with students on various university campuses throughout the United States. These universities include the University of Maine, Harvard, MIT, University of Florida, University of Texas, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Diego, Berkeley, Stanford, University of Hawaii and the University of Washington. Cliffe spoke on these campuses in front of the Student Union or Library at noon for five to ten minutes. At the close of his initial remarks, he'd open up the time for questions and answers, which usually turned into a two to four hour dialogue with students. His crowd size ranged from 25 - 500 students at a time, and between classes, new students would join the discussion. This is an extremely effective way to reach a large number of university students with the Gospel of Christ.ription

It's so easy to type out quick witted comments, it's not easy to do what cliff does. I was an "atheist" for about 5 years, and cliff was one of the ones that made me think different, and actually read for myself and think for myself. Thank you cliff for doing what you do. You inspire me.

I observe that a common thread of argument among the students is that they can't believe, or don't want to believe that there is "one being" that has any ultimate authority. I was reading in Matthew chapter 8 this morning about the Roman Centurion: 5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” 7 Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?” 8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment. The Centurion acknowledges AUTHORITY. He accepts that he himself has authority over his soldiers, but he also realizes that the Emperor has authority over him, and that God has authority over the Emperor. And that's the rub with young people today. They have been raised to believe that NO ONE has any authority over anybody. It is the fault of their liberal parents and their liberal teachers. They are in for a very rude awakening both in this life and the next.

Cliffe says atheism cannot explain free will and that without God we can do as we please.. but we have constructed a society that punishes wrongdoing, if you rob rape or murder for example, you will more than likely pay the price for your crime. We are in essence social creatures, we have deemed what is acceptable in life, causing hurt or harm to another person is frowned upon. We're not the only creatures that do this in nature, plenty of other animals do this. Even the humble ant will work as a team. Also I'd say our morals change over time, here in England 50 years ago it was deemed to be an illegal practice to engage in homosexual activity, which could result in a prison sentence, .. today it's totally acceptable to be in a homosexual relationship, we've moved on.. for the betterment of society.

“Cliffe says atheism cannot explain free will and that without God we can do as we please.. but we have constructed a society that punishes wrongdoing, if you rob rape or murder for example, you will more than likely pay the price for your crime.” Fascinating that you said that your society was constructed to punish wrongdoing, throughout European history and Western history, modern society was forged from Christianity. Now I know that there were those, namely the ancient Catholic Church, who misused the teachings of Christ for their own gain, in which Christ warned about. But the problem with your argument is that not all societies in the world conform to the West. Today there is still African slave trades, women treated as cattle, apartheid (also known as dhimmi) as well as the torture, murder and rape of those who do not follow a particular religion. And they believe that what you and the West is in a constant state of wrongdoing. So how can you explain that? “We are in essence social creatures, we have deemed what is acceptable in life, causing hurt or harm to another person is frowned upon. We're not the only creatures that do this in nature, plenty of other animals do this. Even the humble ant will work as a team. Also I'd say our morals change over time, here in England 50 years ago it was deemed to be an illegal practice to engage in homosexual activity, which could result in a prison sentence, .. today it's totally acceptable to be in a homosexual relationship, we've moved on.. for the betterment of society.” But how does homosexuality benefit society? Today in England pastors and common people are being arrested in the street for merely saying homosexuality is a sin. I saw a story where a Christian couple in England was being pressured to shut down their coffee house, by the government, because they had a LCD screen posting Bible verses that could be seen from the outside through a window. Also the amount of muslims that live in England are being allowed to call for the destruction of England as well as a muslim who beheaded a British Soldier in the streets that has been ignored for severe punishment.

jrc99us Thanks for your reply and your thoughts. You've given me quite a few things to respond to. You say modern society was forged from Christianity, certainly that played a part in Western culture, but real democracy was forged much much earlier in ancient Greece some 500 years before Christ, even the word "democracy" comes from the Greek translation "rule of the people". You are absolutely correct in saying not all societies in the world conform to Western values, I'd say there are many nations around the world that could learn a thing or two from the west.. perhaps first and foremost how to treat fellow human beings of other colours, creeds ,and sexuality. Your comment about pastors and common people being arrested in the street for merely saying homosexuality is a sin here in England is highly exaggerated ( if you can give me links i will gladly look into it), I did some online digging, and did see there was a small incident where a street preacher called Dale McAlpine was arrested on grounds of using homophobic language here in the UK in 2010, he was found not guilty and awarded costs. As regards your other comment, I could find no evidence that any couple were being forced to shut down their coffee house because they wanted to put bible verses in their window. You are free to put anything you like in your own window so long as it isn't libelous or defamatory against anyone. You do have free speech here in the UK, again, so long as it isn't slanderous, I've not heard of any Muslim call for the destruction of England, if that has happened, it would depend in what context it was said, ie, if they were openly encouraging others to commit any kind of crime against the state, it would be acted upon. You mentioned the despicable attempted beheading of the British soldier (Lee Rigby), again, those 2 fundamentalist Muslims were brought to justice and will serve the rest of their lives in prison. Our democracy is by no means perfect, we get things wrong sometimes, but in general, the standard of life here in the west, as you probably know, is much better than some other 3rd world countries. I was a little perplexed by your statement "how does homosexuality benefit society"? As I mentioned, homosexuality was seen as an immoral act a little over 50 years ago, we, as a society, have changed our position on this, and it has become much more accepted nowadays, gays are a part of everyday life now, they don't have to hide their love or feel in anyway ashamed, gays can and do partake in every aspect of society here, and quite rightly too. It benefits society that they don't have to hide their love or be punished for who they are. What would you do with gay people may I ask? Do you find them a blight on society? True morality is doing what is right regardless of what you are told, Religious morality is doing what you are told, regardless of whether it is right... ie: you are told certain things are wrong from the writings of an old book, and you don't question it.

Hey Daniel, thanks for your kind words, don't worry I'm very rarely offended by anything anyone says to me. I do realize that I'm probably outnumbered by Christians, so it's only natural that if I say anything to the contrary concerning Christianity, I will expect Christians to defend their faith. I'm probably more offended by comments from Atheists aimed at Christians, some of it is really nasty. I'm not out to offend anyone, just to give a different view. All discussion is good if conducted in a proper manner. Thanks again.
