When guitarist Randy Bachman was writing Undun, he and singer Burton Cummings were in a music store. Randy saw the flutes and thought that would sound good in the song, however nobody in the band played flute. Burton could play sax and the guy at the store said the fingering on a flute and sax are similar, so they bought the flute and Burton learned enough on it to play the song. He is by no means an expert on the instrument, but he gets the job done.

He is awesome pianist. There are different instruments he plays. Guitar, flute, sax, harmonica and most proficient on piano. Depending on the song. He is now 75yrs old. And still sounds great. Love his talent. Do some research on Burton Cummings and you will find out what a rare jewel he is.

The Guess Who is possibly the biggest band to ever come out of Canada. Burton Cummings is one of the finest rock vocalists, ever. His main instrument is keyboards but he will pick up any number of instruments throughout a performance just for fun. Undun may be their most jazz forward song, hence the flute. You might be interested in the Running Back Thru Canada Tour where you will see the band reunited for a concert in their home town. You may also notice the lead guitar player, Randy Bachman, one of the finest guitar players to ever come out of Canada. He may be better known for his other band, BTO of Takin' Care Of Business fame. Undun is included in the set. Cheers.

Claire, I read that him and a bandmate went to a music shop. He told the guy he wanted to learn the flute quickly. The guy said, don't you play (I think it was clarinet.) clarinet. He said it was same. So he started playing it on gigs. There's another great flute solo in Nights in White Satin, by Moody Blues. There's a live version from2008 at Royal Albert Hall. Moody Blues were the first rock group to incorporate an orchestra in their music. They originally did the song in 68. So this is 40 years later, they are in their late 50's, early 60's. They are phenomenal.

The Guess Who are from my home town of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Burton was considered to have one of the best male voices in rock and roll in the sixties. Burton is known mainly as a pianist, but they wanted a flute for this song . So they went to a music store, picked up a flute and learned to play it in a few hours. He is able to do it with other instruments as well.
@spyder277
@spyder277 7 ай бұрын
Burton just started to learn and play the flute on the song Undun because Burton said the fingering was the same as the sax that he played too. So for Burton just picking up and learning the flute originally and putting that popular and recognizable signature flute part in Undun was quite amazing for Burton to do in The Guess Who on their Canned Wheat album. So Burton should be praised for what he did on Undun adding the flute. Actually on the Guess Who Canned album on the song... 6Am or nearer Burton does two flute solos! Which would be interesting for you to cover as a follow up on your channel. Also The Guess Who actually did probably the first ragae song by a rock and roll band called... Follow Your Daughter Home... where Burton Cummings plays flute and leads with the flute... which is a pretty cool song and grove because The Guess Who compared to many rock and roll bands were so diversified and multi talented musically and in their song writing, because every Guess Who song sounded different than the one before! Which takes talent! It would be interesting too to see you cover these two Burton Cummings and The Guess Who flute songs on your channel.

I think this song is the only one he does flute on. His main instruments are his voice, and the piano. When the Guess Who were putting out their music the big bands they were competing against were The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Beach Boys. During that tie twice they had hits from both the A-Side and the B-Side of 45's. That was an amazing thing to accomplish in those days.

First off, that is Burton Cummings. He's got a great voice. Check out his "Stand Tall". You were right about the flute being new to him. Are you familiar with the Moody Blues? They did a concert at Royal Albert Hall in the early 2000's. They were around 60. They did Nights in White Satin. Great flute solo and a full orchestra. It's fantastic.

Definitely do have a listen to the studio version. Any live version of this song just doesn't do it justice. It's a brilliant song and imo, their masterpiece. You're right, he is not a flutist; he is a great piano/keyboardist and singer. IIRC, he had played the sax for a bit and was told that the flute was similar fingering so he did a short piece for this song. I don't recall a flute in any other Guess Who song.

Burton is not a flutist. He is basically a pianist and a vocalist, but he plays guitar and probably other instruments. He was a saxophonist in a previous band for a couple of years before The Guess Who. He must have been in his late teens or maybe 20. He was only only 21 when the Guess Who had their first hit. The story is that before a performance with the Guess Who they were in a music store earlier in the day and Randy Bachman said he should play flute in a song. He said he didn't the fingering. The store owner said it's the same as the saxophone. Later that evening he played flute in a live performance for the first time.

Give me more.....flute and ....cowbell:) Ive been trying to play flute by trying about 10 minutes every 10 years and largely due to this song. Since he is from my home town Winnipeg in Canada. I find the flute such a breathy hard to play instrument while a sax seems so much easier to get big sounds from . Anyhow...maybe this is the year i can at least play this piece....as simple as it may be to an actual flautist. Thanks for covering the song on your channel.

I do too. I have to admit I wish reviewers such as this channel would choose the studio recordings rather than live performances. Thanks for the review, Claire. Liked & subscribed. If you haven't heard the studio version, I strongly advise you to check it out. His solo is better on it, well, so is his singing, so is everything. In fact, to my untrained ears, I think the flute in that recording is far better, and might even cause you to given his skills at the instrument a bit higher mark kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d7Jgq8aaxNiriKc.html What's amazing is that he and a bandmate were in a music store, and although he had never played a flute before, he bought it after a salesman there told him that the fingering was the same as the sax, which he did play. What's even more amazing is he took the instrument home that afternoon and had mastered it sufficiently to have worked out the solo pretty much immediately, and performed it that same night in a concert!
