Give Me Roses While I Live by The Carter Family
LYRICS:
Wonderful things of folks are said
When they have passed away
Roses adorn the narrow bed
Over the sleeping clay
Give me the roses while I live
Trying to cheer me on
Useless are flowers that you give
After the soul is gone
Kind words are useless when folks lie
Cold in a narrow bed
Don't wait till death to speak kind words
Now should the words be said
Let us not wait to do good deeds
Till they have passed away
Now is the time to sow good seeds
While here on earth we stay

This monring my grandmother stopped breathing. She will make it, but I have no idea for how much long. I realized there were so many wonderful things I wanted her to know and how much I appreciate her, and I started writing an obituary. This song has inspired me to share it with her while I still have the chance, because it would matter to her more than anyone who would attend her funeral.

What I've always believe in....why give when they are gone??? Let them appreciate the love given while they can say thank yuo for caring. Same with any awards or stars in Hollywood. Don't bother after they are gone...let them be the one to see how much they are appreciated and loved by their public. Regular families need do the same, share the love, tell them you love them so they can know that they are truly loved. It can't be shared when they are gone..............................

My mom Beatrice and my oldest brother Daniel is harmonizing in this song with the Carter family, my moms side related. My brothers picture is on the front of the cassette tape when it was made. Many more beautiful songs recorded. Boy, I remember in the evening after supper and dishes finished. Family got the guitars, attached the harmonica usually on my oldest brother Daniel's guitar and the banjo papaw sometimes a few of my uncle's would grab one too and many times a Mandalin also but they would play, play and play together the most awesome music. The best times of my life was watching and listening to the extremely gifted in our family and all the other families who always brought their guitar cases and were already playing and singing before finding a spot to squat down. I can pick some on an acoustic guitar and before the big throat C. I loved to sing and in many musicals and ballet and singing also I had many solos during that time but with someone who is immediately gifted on a certain instrument example guitar I have literally witnessed these miracles w/my own eyes but pick the guitar up and instantly play an acoustic Jimmy Hendrix ballad and never once picked up a guitar until that moment. And before long he and the instrument become as one and because his gift had been given straight from the Creator we should make sure to ask Him first what do YOU want me to do or what music do you want me to play before running down that wide highway to hell. Remember every gift we have comes from God Almighty but because we have free will and we can choose up or down, left or right, strive on the narrow path or drive 3×s over the speed limit on the extremely wide many twists and turns highway to hell"""". But I hope you all are touched by the Lord and each of you find out exactly your perfect gift that can be used by each of us to go to places in life we thought we would never make it to that part of the world or way over to the opposite side you were just at. And most importantly ask God our Father what He expects from us especially when you finally find out the treasure He gave you to share with the world! God bless you always guys

Hidee Cousin, you've mirrored my childhood 💕; Miss you Grandma, Verlin May Risner/Treadway, yer beautiful voice n yer rhythm guitar face to face with you always sits you, Grandaddy Treadway, Willis Edward Treadway, yer eyes bright and wide with pride and pure joy and love, leaned forward like a jockey, watchin her Irish blood call to the heavens and straight into our bones, while you played lead. In awe I watched and listened to your guitar tango/duet. I miss you too Mom, Vera Mae Treadway Bowles, how you could sit down and play anything and how you were so often reluctant to play and sing, then so jaw droppin when you did. Miss you so bad Henry York, Rex Wilson, and "Tip" - Wilburn Tipton, and the Carpenter/Carter "Decoration Day" crowd of cousins, front porch Pickers n Grinners, n Tater salad eaters.🌹

The words to this song were written by R. H. Cornelius of Fort Worth , Texas, in 1926, with music by James Rowe. The name was "Give Me The Roses Now." It is one of many songs written by Mr. Corelius and is included in a song book "Heart Melodies" published by him. He held a singing school in our little community school in New Mexico when I was quite young and stayed at house at that time. We later visited in his home on a trip to Fort Worth. The song was copyrighted in 1926. The sad thing is that the song has been a favorite for many years, yet Mr. Cornelius practically lived in poverty. In later years I'm sure he was not given credit for the song. I do not know about the copyright -when it might have expired - nor do I remember if he had children who might have inherited any rights.

Similar text appears in The Sacred Harp tunebook, with text attributions to James Rowe (1915), rather than tune. 340 Odem (Second) Tune: T. J. Denson, 1935 Words: James Rowe, 1915 Wonderful things of men are said, When they have passed away; Flowers adorn the narrow bed Over the lifeless clay. Chorus: Give me the roses while I live, Something to cheer me on, Useless the flowers you may give, After the soul is gone. Life is the time for words of praise, Hands clasp with friendly smile, Blessings to cheer a pilgrim’s days, Are always well worthwhile. (Chorus)

To a modern ear, the Carter Family at first may seem a bit "old" as we are accustomed to 21st Century recording tricks. But, as you listen carefully to the Carters, their songs get into your blood. You realize that modern singers are a fake, superficially perfect mountain stream replica set up in a shopping mall. The Carters are a real mountain stream, pure crystal clear water, with all the rough edges where the dirt natually crumbles away. I'll take the real mountain stream any day.
