Giving Your Trombone a Bath | A Comprehensive Guide

Today, as per my good friend David's request, we are diving into the world of brass maintenance. This video is an in-depth tutorial on how to give your trombone a bath. In this video I did a lot more editing than normal, including timelapses with me playing The Acrobat added into the background. The editing portion is a bit tedious, but also rather enjoyable. Let me know what you think.
You will need:
- Your trombone
- Slide grease or cream (preferably Yamaha or Slide-O-Mix)
- A flexible "snake" brush
- A mouthpiece brush
- A cleaning cloth or rag for gentle polishing
- An old towel to rest your trombone on
- Degreaser or dish soap (Ajax works well)

4 years later and this video somehow finds its way to me! This was very helpful as I really wanted to find a way to keep my trombone clean and not damage while in storage.

Glad I could help! Although make sure in the future that if you use slide cream and not the oil stuff you need to add water-- that's a huge fault that I didn't even notice while filming.

Great video, but just a concern. If I own a trombone with a standard rotary valve F attachment, is it the same process to clean?

jonsoles No it isn’t. Sorry, I’m a little late to the game here but as far as I understand, it is not good for the trigger mechanism to be that wet

Some feedback from a fellow trombonist, if you'll accept it: looks like you forgot to spray water after applying slide cream. That's an important step. Also, slide cream and slide grease are not interchangeable. It's possible that the slide cream is contributing to your tuning slide issues. It's often entirely unnecessary to add any cream to the "2nd position" region. Usually just the stockings is enough, although that may depend on the individual trombone. Keep up the good work! Instrument maintenance is vitally important and I'm glad you're spreading the news!

David Roth thanks a lot for the suggestions! I'll try cleaning off my tuning slide and using some trumpet slide grease. As for the second position area, that region tends to be a little choppy, so that's why I apply some cream there. Not sure why that is the case, but the cream seems to fix the issue for the most part.

I don't have slide cream, so what I used to do is grease the slide with slide grease, and then water it down with valve oil, now I just use oil because I haven't had access to grease in months.

The grease/oil trick works really well on trumpets' 3rd valve slides in my experience, and probably isn't half bad on trombone. Unfortunately, my current trombone is a beaten-up student model with a dent or two in the slide, and even with top-grade Slide-O-Mix products the slide is slow and jerky.

More or less. Just make sure not to let the water get too hot, and you may also have to do some additional polishing at the end.

I recommend buying a snake, but nothing harmful will happen if you give it a bath without a snake. The snake only helps to clean more effectively.

@@Plotani Yes, I was using the 891Z. Unfortunately the trombone I have now is one of their student instruments, the YSL-354.

You’ll have to disassemble the trigger first off. There are probably a lot of videos out there on the topic.
