LEGO Train Junctions Shorter Crossover Hack - LEGO Train Junctions Hack! LEGO city trains used to be blessed with lots of different sizes and shapes of track pieces. This is how to moc hack the LEGO junctions to create tighter and closer crossover points.
gjbricks.com | / gjbricks | • Top 5 and a bit LEGO C...
Before we carry on, I want to make it clear that I was not happy cutting track pieces to hack them into shape. But, I’m very glad I did!
Why did I do this? I wanted to be able to run two LEGO Train Tracks and be free to have my trains swap. But I couldn’t because the gap between tracks when you connect two junctions meant it took up half of our LEGO city (creative embellishment there).
• Custom LEGO City Updat...
And for the record, there are aftermarket alternatives like 4DBrix and TrixBrix have versions that allow you to have a shorter crossover, and indeed multi-directional. But this approach is about half the price of them (currently).
In this tutorial, I will show you how to cut the LEGO Train Junction to go from 16 studs apart to 8 (or even 6 if you need). The idea is to cut two of the sleepers, and then a piece of track and join them together with two plates.
One thing before carrying on: Kids, if you are considering this, get your parents to do it. Sharp things and cutting sharp objects is dangerous!
To do this, I used a sharp, strong craft knife to cut theme because it gives a smoother finish. Using a hacksaw can give a very “hacky” and rough finish. If you have a power tool, that’ll help.
You’ll then want to finish them with a small file - I used a metal one. Once done, join them with a 2x4 plate across each of the cut sleepers.
Now, for my first time doing this, I ended up with about a 1mm gap which is fine - visible in my Custom LEGO City layout because the table is white, but once I’ve gone and laid the Ballast you won’t even notice the gap.
The LEGO trains don’t notice at all and are happy to be able to switch quickly between the tracks.
Watch till the end as I’ve some video of my LEGO city passenger train 60197 and cargo train 60052 running around the track.
I really hope this helps you save some space and hopefully add crossovers where you thought you couldn’t.
Let me know what you think along with suggestions when you've finished watching the video and don’t forget to like it!
And if you haven't already, hit the subscribe button and turn on the "bell" to get the latest updates and see what I’ve been up to!

Unfortunately they were only made for ~18 months over a decade ago and are now rather pricey. The one I have, I only "only" paid $100 for it. Bricklink's best price as of May 2024 is $92.

There's a marvellous 3p company that makes some switches that dont curve back towards the straight, with a,left and right they form up almost exactly like your cuts! Trixbricks is the company name!
@BlockHeadUK

This is a good hack (pun intended) to get a better layout for your town. The reason the originals have the curves sticking out is to preserve the track geometry - after you add the extra curve to make the siding parallel it then lines up with the far end (once you have added a straight to the points). So points + straight + curve gives you 2 parallel tracks of the same length. It is a pain but it wouldn’t preserve the joint locations on subsequent straights otherwise, which I suspect would upset folks even more! 😁 As for the cutting LEGO issue. I was against it until recently, until I realised the only way of getting large quantities of 16-wide thin baseplates was to cut up a 48x48 into 3 long strips. Buying after-market second hand was going to cost me a fortune. And my city is so small that the layout required the hacking solution to make it work with train tracks. I’m happy I did it. After all, it’s your property and you can do what you like with it! Just ignore the haters 😉

I like the way that 4D Brix sells theirs with the junction have a small extension piece to make it curve. Or leave and join them together for the best of both worlds. It's kind of like a small piece of flexitrack. And Downunder bricks does the same thing - although I think his are slight trims to make them fit. He apologises every time he does it. Lol! If it works, and you don't mind doing it, fine by me. I will aim to minimise it, but I'm happy with the space I gained doing this!

GJBricks any plans for getting larger radius curves? I know the shipping to Oz is crippling. That’s one thing that bugs me about LEGO track is only having one curve radius (unlike Hornby Dublo for instance) so you can’t have nice neat parallel curves going on. Does me head in! 🤯

You've seen the size of my city yeah? I'd basically just have track if I did that :) But, I have heard it's possible to download the 3D printing files and do them yourself. The joys of 3D Printing! I wish I could afford to buy that track - then I'd probably also have the money to buy the Emerald Night train (and metroliner, horizon express, the 7938 train - converted to jacobs bogies, etc)
@BlockHeadUK
@BlockHeadUK 6 жыл бұрын
GJBricks LOL, ok. I hear you 😉 I would love Horizon Express. Apart from the cost, it has quite an overhang at each end and I’m wondering if there is enough loading gauge in my tunnel - it’s a tight fit with the curves, wall and tunnel entrances! 😱
@GJBricks

Do you have the white high speed train? I imagine that would be similar overhang (was never a fan of that train)

One of the most informative Lego videos I have seen - excellent description of what you did and why, GJ. You had a problem, thought about it and solved it - that’s what all of us Lego builders do. I’m not against cutting Lego to make it fit your needs and for those of us without unlimited space (or aren’t jangbricks 😜) it is a necessary option. I’d never cut anything other than tracks or base plates though. It’s not as evil as glueing Lego!! That is just plain wrong 😀👍

The only thing I do not like about this is that motorizing the switches is probably impossible from the ground level. Maybe from down under ;) I will try to do it but I think I have to raise the tracks about two bricks to fit the motor under the tracks. I have two left switching tracks to spare from my powered up cargo train sets, so I will probably hack them up :)
@GJBricks
@GJBricks 5 жыл бұрын
I will be interested to see how you go. But I'm sure a lot of people have done it from the top, or do you mean by shortening them, the closeness makes it hard to do?
@juliansbrickcity5083
@juliansbrickcity5083 5 жыл бұрын
@@GJBricks Yes, because after shortening them you only have 8 studs to work with and the switches are between the tracks and already use 6 studs. I raised the tracks by two bricks and a plate and now the m-motor fits just under the tracks. Switching works perfectly now. My other solution would be to just use a curved track instead of the straight to give more space for the motor but that limits where I can put the tracks in a layout or makes it bigger again.
