I recently filmed a video showing two Custom LEGO Passenger Trains running with Jacobs Bogies around the GJBricks Custom LEGO City. It's an upgrade I'd been planning to make since the day I saw this slick new 2018 LEGO Train. And I'm very happy with how it looks.
• Dual LEGO City Passeng...
As part of that video, some questions came up from my subscribers. So this video includes a bit of a Q&A, to begin with as well as some history as to what Jacobs Bogies actually are and why they exist.
The first question that came up was asking what are Jacobs Bogies. And the 2nd was how do I do this myself? This video answers both of those questions!
To start with I'll tell you a bit about what the Jacobs Bogie is, some of its histories, when it was created and what is so good about it for trains. Also, when and where it is used on real-world train systems.
Then I'll show you how I translated that to work with the new 2018 LEGO City Passenger Train 60197. If you haven't seen it previously, I reviewed this set. I loved it, but in my review, I'll go into more detail:
• LEGO CITY Passenger Tr...
This LEGO Tutorial shows you the parts you'll need to do the upgrade and starts at 03:30. My how-to shows you how to build the bogie as well as some suggestions for things you can do make it custom for your own train. I also talk through why I made some of the design decisions.
And finally, let's test it! I will confess that there is a train crash around 8 minutes into the video at around 08:20. You need to bank the corners to make it run at Power Functions system run at speed 10.
To finish the video out, there are more shots of my dual LEGO Train 60197 sets running around the city. There are a few new parts of the city you'll see, but they'll be coming in my next Custom LEGO City update.
Let me know what you think along with suggestions when you've finished watching the video, and don’t forget to like it!

So I didn't plan to make the train #crash. I forgot that a recent track update, I hadn't banked the new corners. Luckily it was an inside corner and not the ones that end in #LEGO Train eating Concrete. What omissions have you made in your train setups that have been near misses?

the main safety advantage of Jacobs bogie is that it prevents telescoping (aka 1 carriage riding up another and sliding into each other) also it makes the train more rigid and less prone to capsizing when derailed

Thank God you didn’t go to speed 11.... Cool train. I’m not that knowledgable about trains or Lego trains in particular, but I do like these! I spent many years organising station openings and train naming ceremonies for Royal Mail. I used to order a model of the train we were naming from this chap who was, by all accounts, one of the best modellers in the UK. His models were totally accurate and so detailed. I often thought about ordering an extra for myself, but they were blooming expensive!

Hey, thanks for the comment. In this case it's the weight - or lack of weight - of the train. Unlike the Crocodile that comes off on junctions and track chicanes this tips over. The Horizon Express doesn't due to it's weight.

Really nice solution! I was wondering if the cars bould bump together in curves if you reduce the lenght of the jacob's bogie of one stud (3 studs in between the axels instead of 4). This would make the train more compact and realistic as I think that the "hole" between the two cars is quite big (even if it the same as the original). In any case I really love this simple, realistic looking and compact solution!
@GJBricks

Thanks for the great comment! Glad you liked it. I’ve done it to all my passenger trains now as it just looks so much slicker. And I’ve been wanting to look into closing up that gap. From memory it didn’t work closing it up but I’ll try again. I’m in the process of heavily modifying my 60197 to make it look better and the carriage joins was on my list. I want to make it tilt but I can’t make the mechanism compact enough for my liking (yet).
@yuezhao7487
@yuezhao7487 2 жыл бұрын
I think it really depends on the curvature of the curves. The bigger the radius the closer you can close the gap. Another fact is the length of the car. The longer the car, the greater the gap.

Love this set, just one problem...Those tiny carriages. To look right a passenger carriage should be five times longer than its height. So most lego carriages are 8 or 9 high, wheels are 2 and the body is 6, 7 or 8. So this train is by my count 9 high, so the carriage length should be 45 studs to have the correct proportions so it looks right. Those carriages look 24 at most, barely half the length they should be. Maybe a project for the future? Trains rule ok!

@GJBricks
@GJBricks 3 жыл бұрын
From memory, when you join the two last passenger cars, the under carriage element will have quite a gap to the bogie which you can fill in (or ignore). A lot of people swap out the bogies then leave the last two carriages as standard. One thing you’ll need to do joining to trains is take out the motor from the last train too or it’ll drag. One motor can pull the whole train although personally I’m working on making mine dual motor in the front car

I shortened my train so it only needed one motor. The powered up system is more powerful than the old IR system. If I add a 4th passenger car it slow. Apparently, the latest app has an option to reverse a motor, but I can’t find it. I need to reach out to LEGO about it. I motorised my Christmas train recently, but controls are reversed currently using the Bluetooth app on my phone. Easy if you use the controller, just rotate it

@GJBricks
@GJBricks 4 жыл бұрын
I am only running one as when I did it you couldn’t attach two. They’ve change that now. But.. the engine design needs tweaking as the front bogey is only 4 studs long (look closely). But I’ll probably do the upgrade at some point to smooth it. I’ve got the 7938 train too. GJBricks I meant basically keeping the 4 wheels but changing the magnet piece really. Would that still have the same affect as only using 2 wheels total
@GJBricks
@GJBricks 4 жыл бұрын
Ah, right. Not quite the same as the two bogies vs 4 reduces friction. Also, the overlap is different in the Jacobs bogie which changes the dynamic a bit too. And if you change the magnet to something more solid, check it through junctions. If you check my Hogwarts express motorisation, I flagged an issue where the connection they used actually details the train. You have to swap the 3 bar they use for a 4 (or magnets)

Got ideas, just need bricks - and maybe a second Hogwarts Express set (and then I can use the other parts for another train MOC too!). I'll try and make sure I do it as a step by step. I've also been gathering ideas for furnishing the station so I'll share those as tutorials too! Thanks for sharing your ideas! I really appreciate the feedback!

Did you leave the train motor in both engines? If not, how did you build the rear bogie on the unpowered engine?

It was just one motor in the front engine! Pulled fine. But I’ve since lengthened the train cars and now I have two motors in the front engine connected to the the same box - same way I do my horizon express. I just built a new bogie for the rear from spare parts

@@GJBricks can you show us how you built the rear unpowered bogie? I'm not happy with what I came up with.

It would look a lot better if you extended the undercarriage tanks.

Thanks for the feedback I actually have but did it after this video. I’m planning to do a remake of this because I’ve made other upgrades to that train as well. But I still think it looks really cool like this! Planning to upgrade my 7938 train too when I get the extra carriage for it

Ha ha. Still got it. Kept the train shorter for my layout and using the parts for another moc. Although I have considered stretching the train carriages by 4 studs
