Scissor's left hand weapon is super effective for grabbing shields. I don't think you mentioned that. That's why he doesn't have shield, he is meant to counter them.

It is almost like you just pitched an idea for a Gladiator game. If done in a similar fashion to Kingdom Come, but focused solely on combat in arena, it might be a very interesting experience.

I have not yet been able to discover the literal meaning of this word; I've found that it comes from the Greek word "Mymillon", but I have no idea what that means, except that it may come from the Greek word "Myrmiddon", which would kind of make sense given their equipment. My understanding of gladiators is that the more armor they had, the shorter their weapon was. So one guy had full armor and big shield and a little itty bitty dagger and the guy with the long trident and net had almost no armor. Then there were some in between. I guess I was wrong about that.

+Arsène Lupin No they weren't balanced, infacti sometimes we have situations of two gladiators against one to try and balance up things, but most of it was the experience of the gladiator, a veteran could be very difficult to defeat no matter the class.

I just read the Gladiators: The World's Most Deadliest Sport and learned all about these I love how well thought the classes were, the fact they balanced the Gladiators like the ones with holed helmets they couldn't see well, so the had to get close, but in their advantage was their body shield and gladius, it's also where I learned Contemptus Mortis. which mean't fearlessness in the face of death. This was a fantastic book and anyone looking to learn more on the gladiators must get this book it's by Fik Meijer.

First of all, nice shirt! I used to have a book when I was a kid called "A Visitor's Guide to Ancient Rome" and it had an section on gladiators and the Colosseum. There was a part where they listed and described many of the common gladiator classes. This video made for a great trip down memory lane.

Great vid, would love to know more about the rarer classes. It reminds me I saw a documentary a while ago about this very subject and it mentioned a few additional things. It seems it is thought the reason most gladiators possesed good protection to the head, arms and legs but not the torso was that the public prefered to see quick and bloody deaths rather than drawn out maiming. Also in regards to the Retiarius it was also mentioned that most gladiators were not allowed to actively retreat from their opponent, only the Retirarius was allowed to use this tactic and thus make full usage of their lightly armoured nature and to 'bait' the opponent to keep with the fisherman theme.

The Provocatores are a variant of the Hastatus Legionary class of the manipular system. Hastati had a scutum, helmet a pectoral (small square/rectangular plate of bronze on the chest) and one greave on the left leg. Originally the Hastati are said to have used the Hasta lance as main weapon but switched to pilum & gladius in later times, but when exactly is not clear to me. One source says they changed weaponry and tactics after the Gallic invasion of 390BC(?) others figure it was after or during the Samnite wars. Do you know anything about that great Metatron?

Given the fact they were divided in classes, were they allowed to grab equipment either dropped by or from a fallen opponent in the case multiple fighters were in stage at the same time? Or did they have to stick to their designed weaponry and armor? Great video once again, thank you!

The Trax is holding the sica the wrong way, unless that's how he means to stab. The blade was sharpened along the curve, like the opposite of a katana or sabre.

A question here if you have the time and intrest. "There are a lot of complaints about half-armour in fantasy styles and questions about bikini armour and so on. But, suppose you have limited funds. How would what kind of priorities would you make. What would you invest in first? What I am really wondering is if it, for example makes sence to only protect one arm with plate.

The Gladiatorial Classes were not necessarily balanced. Some of them were purely designed for entertainment, like the Retiarius Class.

I'm quite certain that many of these classes evolved as direct result of different sponsors competing against each other. Lucius the Fish Merchant has sponsored a school training retiarii and secutori and Marcus the Horse Trader sponsors a school training diplomachii and bets big money on his gladiator being being better.

Weren't gladiators basically like movie starts/entertainment artists are to us? I mean, lots of people volunteered to be gladiators, and really good ones gained huge amounts of popularity and fans.

Very good video. The Retiarius must be the class that died most.... The trident is a very bad weapon to kill people due this 3 pointy spikes. One single point is the best for penetration purposes (no pun intended). Also he has almost no protection comparing to the others.
