*NO JUDGEMENT!* 🩷 If you, like lots of women, grew up with Mom, Grandma, or Auntie doing your hair at home or being taken to the salon, and continued relying on beauticians as an adult, it makes sense that you wouldn’t really know your hair or how to maintain, cut, and style it.
@hereforit2347

Out of frustration, my mom chopped off my and my sister’s hair when I was in first grade and my sister in Kindergarten. She left us with short Afros that we were responsible for taking care of. Every year or so, she trimmed our ‘Fros with clippers. Aside from that, washing and combing was up to us. My sister, to this day, never really connected with her hair. I, on the other hand, did, and helped her care for hers. The summer before starting 5th grade, I’d gotten my hands on a hot comb and taught myself to press my hair. My friend’s mom had pressed it once when I was in 4th grade and I paid close attention to what she was doing. As an adult, I’ve had stints here and there when I went to the salon somewhat regularly, but health-wise, it did more harm than good. For the most part, I did my own hair and even taught myself to cut it. I’ve worn pixies, bobs, and layered cuts, all done and maintained by yours truly. I taught myself to use marcel irons and everything. But I didn’t really learn what my hair needed for optimal health and length retention until I started a hair journey in 2016. I learned everything I know from KZfaq, Google, and logic. Now, my hair is denser than it has been in years and 4-5 times longer than it has ever been in my life. ❤

Lol this girl in high school way back when, brought her flat iron to gym and tried to flat iron her hair between changing out of gym clothes and before the next bell. I swear she passed over her one section of hair 20 times. Had the locker room smoking!!!!! I was like damn! I didn't know you could set a flat iron to "depths of hell"!

His flat iron technique is SPOT ON. I do a few things differently: 1) Instead of “tapping” my roots with the flat iron, I press my roots, nape, and edges with a traditional (non-electric) hot comb one small section at a time. A mini hot comb is great for snatching short, tiny perimeter hairs. I think using a hot comb in this way creates a more finished look. If you don’t know how to gauge the temperature on an old-school pressing comb, an electric one will do fine. Many of them have temperature gauges now. 2) I then divide those sections into TINY sub-sections, even smaller than those in this video, and flat iron them. The smaller the sections the greater the chance of direct heat getting to each strand of hair. This allows for silky-straight results at a lower temperature. 3) Since the chase method requires so much dexterity, I attach a self-adhesive heat-resistant comb to my flat iron which leaves me with a free hand. 4) I wear heat-resistant forefinger and thumb covers (or heat-resistant glove) on my free hand and lightly pinch the tip of the flat iron during each pass. This helps me get a tighter squeeze with the iron and a smoother result. 5) Like demonstrated in this video, I make very slow passes in a downward motion. One pass is all that’s necessary. But I don’t go so slow as to leave the iron in one place too long and potentially burn my hair. Personally, I never add more heat by creating curls with a curling iron once I’ve flat ironed my hair. I will either wrap my hair or pin curl it. ❤

Can you do a video for curling hair? I don’t know how to curl my hair without straightening it first but the curls fall right out.

Thank you! My straightener goes up to 220 degrees max. Can this be achieved if I apply this technique correctly?

I need so many tutorials at 43. I've always stuck to figure it out. And THAT'S why I have broken off the crown area of my hair. It's slowly growing back. ☺😅
