As a plus sized girl I know the struggle of doing dance moves like that. It takes ten times more effort to get them than everyone else in your cast. It can make you really embarrassed, and self-conscious. I could only imagine how Mercedes was feeling then. Mr. Shue handled it so wrong. Encouraging her was alright, but the second he said did you even practice he crossed the line. She was obviously embarrassed. She didn't feel well. Maybe it was an exscuse, but a volunteer school program should not shame a student.

The answer to this is simple: Rachel WAS indeed the best in the club, and she was the best because she believed she was. End of story. There's a scene in Night of Neglect, where Rachel tells Mercedes she has to literally take the spotlight away from her, if she really wants it. Truth is, Mercedes thought that her voice was all she needed, while Rachel knew having a great voice wasn't enough.

Mr. Schue knew Mercedes was right every single line she just said, Mr. Schue Said that “ if you walk out that door, you’re out of glee” He said that because His pride and his ego was hurt so he just couldn’t let that go.🙄😑

Mercedes is just as much of a diva as Rachel is. She has a powerful voice, yes. But that alone isn't enough. Mercedes would be able to take solos if she gave as much efforts as Rachel does in practicing. But she wastes time bitching around and blaming rachel instead of trying to improve. Jesse pointed it out too, Mercedes's problem is that she is lazy. And she refuses to admit it, because for her, she shouldn't feel the need to earn something, it should be given to her. I know a lot of people want to defend Mercedes here, because y’all are right; Will does let Rachel get away with more BUT TELL ME THIS: Two equally talented vocalists are standing in front of you, but one wakes up every morning to practice, practices every evening, dreams of actually being in musical theater, has shown acting chops, and in spite of being selfish, does so because she clearly takes it very seriously... And the other one was told by her boyfriend she is a star but never actually dances, practices, and has expressed no desire to continue in musical theater after high school NOT TO MENTION when asked the year previous by someone more experienced than her about if she practices, she literally said she didn’t need to. Rachel is selfish. Annoying. Egotistical. One thing she is not is lazy. Mercedes is. Rachel earned her solos, the role, and the ability not to have to attend booty camp. Mercedes needs to work harder in booty camp. I am a big girl, but I went through hell to learn all the dances to play Tracy Turnblad when I definitely was not a front runner or favorite. I put my all. She just pisses me off.

I can kinda agree with Mercedes when it comes to rachel, but Mercedes and rachel are both divas. the difference is rachel is more ambitious. she works to get what she wants and does it in any way possible. I feel like Mercedes doesn't work hard enough to get what she wants. I mean, she puts in effort, but just not enough. and, honestly you can't say that rachel doesn't have her good moments. sure, she's obnoxious, rude and has like the worst attitude ever, but I thin mad the show went on she became less intense and more normal. because you need to take into account that rachel didn't really have friends growing up, so she's socially awkward and doesn't really know how to care about anybody but herself really. and I think the show did a good job of progressing her character, but still keeping her personality the same.

I think people are getting into the "Rachel Berry" part of this argument. It wasn't aimed at Rachel, more so towards Will's blatant favouritism for her. Rachel not being there is the byproduct of Will's consistent babying of her. Sure, Rachel fought for everything, but she didn't have to fight much when she was practically given solo after solo. She's not there because Will already has his own dispositions on the team. Not to mention the fact that he can't play to people's weaknesses at all. Sure Mercedes doesn't get enough solos I agree. But this outburst was not Rachel's fault. Rachel practices the dance moves every day. Everybody saying Mercedes never gets solos. In season 1 sectionals Mercedes was supposed to do the solo NOT Rachel, but Mercedes told Rachel she couldnt do it and let Rachel take the solo. In season 2 for the fundraiser concert episode, Mercedes was acting like a total brat and diva. And when they couldn't get her a damn puppy to wipe her hands with or get people to carry her everywhere, she didnt want to do her solo. And then Rachel herself went and told Mercedes if she wanted to be in the spotlight she had to TAKE it from Rachel. When they did double casting for West Side Story, Rachel was fine sharing the role with Mercedes but it was Mercedes who was being a damn brat and didnt wanna share the lead role so she quit. And even before that when Emma,Coach Beiste and Artie tokd Mercedes and Rachel they had to audition again as callbacks for Maria, Rachel wanted to be friendly and give Mercedes a hug and Mercedes was the one who was being stubborn like "You can hug me AFTER i win" like wtf. Mercedes and Rachel both get on my nerves. But they are both equally talented in different voice styles. Rachel is more fit for Broadway and Classical music as where Mercedes is more fit for R&B and Soulful music. Another thing, everyone says Rachel is a horrible person, but when the people who are supposed to be her friends say awful things about her, yall dont have a problem with it. And Rachel forgave all of them EVEN SANTANA for the horrible things they have said and done to her. But the second Rachel does or says 1 horrible thing you guys all degrade her. And the only thing you guys bring up is the Sunshine crackhouse thing. Because in reality thats really the only horrible thing she has done to someone. And Rachel APOLOGIZED to Sunshine and explained she was only scared of her talent. Where most of her glee club 'friends' never apologized for what they did to her. What im trying to say is there is a double standard for Rachel and the other Glee club members.

It has always been the Finn and Rachel show. Idk why when everyone talks about who got all the solos and shit like that they always come for Rachel as if Finn did not get all the roles without auditioning.

While I was really annoyed by most members only thinking about themselves, Mercedes is right, Rachel was Schuester's favourite, she got everything she wanted, all she had to do was ask and the rest got ignored

I loved Mercedes but this is one of the moments that I hated about her. Rachel was honestly my least favorite character, but in the end Rachel got the solos and the attention because she worked harder than anyone else in Glee. There were so many times where the Glee Club pulled through, or were amazing because Mr. Shue and Rachel pushed them. The mash off in season 1 for example, where all of the girls except for Rachel decided to "wing it" instead of actually practicing. She also exposed half of the club in season one for pretending to do the warm ups. Mercedes was right, she was just as talented as Rachel, but there were so many times where she wanted the spotlight but didn't want to do the work. She always said she wanted to be the next Beyonce, but Beyonce spends hours, days, and sometimes weeks working on her performances, choreography, singing, etc. Mr. Shue wasn't picking on her, he was pushing her because he knew she could do better but there were times where she chose not to.

the thing that doesn’t make sense about this is that mercedes in the past put in JUST as much work as everyone else. dancing at competitions, memorizing songs, usually going above and beyond by doing runs and adding flourishes in each performance. so this characterization of her as ‘lazy’ honestly came out of nowhere. this whole scenario only happened to kickstart the troubletones storyline.

I agree with everything she said. Whenever Rachel storms off because she didn't get what she wanted ppl seem to have selective memory. That's why when she went to NY with that 'superior' act saying she didn't need nyada she lost everything. She had to humble herself to get everything back. The girl who sent someone to a crack house because she was threatened, the girl who was willing to take school president from her so called best friend, the girl who walked in Glee club with tape on her mouth telling ppl that she was being silenced and that Mr. Shue was threatened by her talents when she literally gets every solo, the girl that had Finn like a cheering mascot. I get that Rachel is talented but it's Glee club not The Rachel Club. Everyone, especially someone as talented as Mercedes, deserved their fair chance to show their talent. Everyone says that Mercedes never got solos despite arguably being the best singer in glee - well then, watch the video! Mercedes didn't get the solos because she didn't work for them. She came to rehearsal late and quit when she couldn't learn a dance move! Mr. Schue gave Rachel solos because she clearly expressed how hard she worked, and was always the most passionate about glee club (remember that episode when she got ill or something because no one else was signing?) This clip right here is exactly why Mercedes didn't get more solos! She didn't have the work ethic.

People really getting pressed over Rachel getting all the solos in the show. She’s the lead character. Point blank period. The producers made a character they wanted to be the star of Glee, and have the best MUSICAL THEATRE voice. Lea auditioned for that character, the producers loved her and her voice, she got the role, and became the lead character. They use the “Rachel is the favorite” excuse to show the fact that she is the main character, not the only one, but the main one. You have to remember that the producers created this character to be the one to be front and center of the show and get the most screen time because that’s what lead characters do. I love the show for focusing on the other lead characters too and giving them story lines (even if they don’t always make senses) but if Lea/Rachel is the leading lady, of course she’s gonna get the most screen time/songs, she has the main storylines.

When Tina and rachel left both of them git gastlighted with the same excuses but when rachel quits its like the world when a search party to get the brat back into that glee clib even if it meant the others werent gonna get to shine

I love Mercedes, but I don’t get how people in the comments sided with her on this. Rachel practices every night, fights for a solo, and puts in 110% with everything that she does. Mercedes could get all the solos, but she doesn’t try. She thinks that she’s good enough to just show up & win, which is why she never won. Rachel always got the solo or the part because she was willing to do anything to get it. She may have been a bit narcissistic, but she still put in the effort.
