It was never specified on how finn died in the show the writer said he was going for drug overdose at first the same way the actor died in real life but he changed his mind and decided not to give a cause of death at all,so canonically he either died from a car crash or the original idea of drug overdose.

What the boy should've done: 1. Don't touch the "drugs" 2. Call the cops 3. Accuse teacher of framing 4. Cops takes the small bag and confirm the boy didn't have any affiliation with the drugs 5. Teacher gets arrested and you will be seen as a hero

Well in the show they kind’ve set it up as if Finn did drugs before once or twice and that’s where his character kind of mirrors himself (Cory) so yeah that’s what Finn should’ve of done but didn’t merely because he didn’t know that was happening

Actually there was a real drug problem because do you remember that it was couch Tanaka that had just got the same chronic lady from Sandy Ryerson? And also what will shuester said was that there could be a better solution for joining another club which would be more helpful for finn because in being part of the football team you do have take performance enhancers to empress the football scouts for getting a football scholarship
