Agreed. Ed Wood seemed to genuinely care about his craft and tried to better himself as a director. Uwe Boll's solution to criticism was the equivalent of a elementary school bully and he never tried to better his "skills" at all.

well, it is surprisingly progessive, even for modern day standards surprisingly. I mean, the closest we got recently was a movie with a trans teen in it, and they were portrayed as selfish and immature, so.. yeah. I'm mtf trans, and this is a harmless little thing, showing trans people in a positive light, for the most part. Other than the whole thing on how he has to change to continue being a man, as if it's that easy, or possible.

As you said, transgender people were basically outcasts and being openly LGBTQ+ was considered a death sentence in many circles. So it was a very brave and progressive thing for this kind of movie to be made...even if it was executed very, very poorly. It's hard to determine whether or not by modern standards Ed could be regarded as trans, but accounts by his friends suggest he did it more as a turn on than an expression of his gender identity, but who knows. I will say whatever his reasons I actually have a soft spot for this film as it must be one of the earliest films that is sympathetic to folks who don't conform to gender norms. It is kind of hard to work out where Ed fits on the gender spectrum, & back then trans,non-binary,gender-fluid (and even fetishists)tended to be all (inaccurately)lumped together.It's fascinating as a cultural artifact of one man trying to figure it all out. There are definitely movies that do harm now, but movies like The Danish Girl, I believe it was called, were really great even if it didn't have a transgender actor. So, while getting correct people for correct roles is important, I feel like it's the message and delivery that counts more. (I think the actor was male gender wise.)

Nicole Schoenhoft That actually sounds like it could be a really art filmy sort of analogy tonuse i the film. having a transgender woman dress as a man, like they used to, and then slowly changing so that by the end of the film, the main character, and in turn, the actor, have removed their costume to reveal the woman thst they always wanted to be. (By remove their costume, i mean slowly using less and less of the stuff that makes them look like a man, and finishing the film dressed like how they'd normaly dress in that time period).
