It can be inconvenient to be a gamer in Brazil--thus, its fame as a game piracy hub--but there's also a strong cultural spirit of progress in the country that can make it a great environment for developing new, original IPs.

About this video: I agree with most of this, and, since the release of the video, there were some changes: 1- Steam is here already 2- playstation 4 was really expensive, with the price around 1500 dollars 3- I usually see most of games translated to Brazilian Portuguese and sometimes not even translated to other Portuguese variants. 4 - I'm looking foward to know where you found a brand-new Sega Genesis, I've never heard about them being produced here. 5- Unfortunately, with the economic situation of the country, I don't see a development in the game industry in the next years I know this video was made basically 3 years ago

Yet I still can't buy AAA games on steam outside of crazy summer sales because even though they cost 60 dollars, that's around 200 reais and our income is so low. That said, I think console games on the PS3 era used to cost around 300 bucks on retail iirc so it's definitely progress. We still have a long way to go..

Decided to give some updates on the current situation here in Brazil. Over the last few years the minimum wage has gone up (about 100 reais per year, now being at around 1000 reais per month, which is still around 10 times lower than minimum wage in the US) but the currency conversion rate also changed, 1 dollar is about 4 reais here, which basically makes the minimum wage increase worthless when talking about foreign products like video games. Not only that but the high taxes makes certain game developing companies and publishers shy away from exporting to Brazil (Nintendo for example) and the situation doesn't seem to be getting any better, politics is chaos right now and politicians have other stuff to worry about rather than reviewing taxation policies. But we can always hope.

I am Brazilian and I can confirm all what have been said in this video is correct. Though I just would like to point out a little something that I believe is important in the Brazilian video games scenario: Gambling. You see, one of the reasons taxes over video games in Brazil are SO high is because the government labels them as gambling. And gambling is illegal in Brazil. Now, the following is mostly my personal guess but I don't think it is far from being a reality so here I go: The reason we can have video games, despite their absurdly high price tags, is because the government KNOWS it ISN'T gambling so they can't prohibit it. But since the Brazilian government is more interested in taking as much money from the people as possible (seriously, ask any Brazilian) they use gambling as an excuse to keep the prices/taxes as high as they can so that way, they can have a huge chunk of profit over each sale.
@MikeDragon
@MikeDragon 8 жыл бұрын
+Fernie Canto Dude. Calm down. Brazil itself is bullshit. I do have to admit that my information might be a little old. Initially it was included in the gambling "category" but I haven't checked in any recent information on the status in the past few years. These changes you mention (which I don't doubt) are very recent stuff. Though if you look up you will see that what I said about gambling is true. They base that allegation on a really old law about gambling and for that reason, even fire weapons are cheaper than games! "Did You Know Gaming" even mentioned that a while back and I believe I have read a detailed article about it a couple years ago on Gizmodo or TechMundo. Aside from that you should also find info on that on tech websites, news and other reliable sources. I don't know if they FINALLY changed that ever since I learned about all that nonsense. Although you are right about the government and industry being slow and afraid of risks/changes, it can't be denied that, at least on the government's part, they have little to no intention on rushing any change that may result in lower taxes/prices for the consumer. After all, that would mean less money in their wallets and underwear. Ugh... Brazil is such a complicated country but one thing I tell ya... Things in that area in Brazil will only change IF the (international) pressure on the government is unbearable for them. They won't bother otherwise. Just look at all the things the country/people is in need of, as an example. Pressure to make them change things for the better have always been there. They simply don't give a damn. Just raise more taxes with the claim that's just so they can provide better conditions for the people but those "better conditions" never come. In the meantime we have spend more money with taxes than with food to keep ourselves alive while living conditions are deplorable, to say the least. Brazil will not change by itself. Not within at least the next 20 years. It would already have by now if they cared. Time is something we already had plenty of.
@MikeDragon
@MikeDragon 8 жыл бұрын
+Fernie Canto No, not really. I don't. I am aware of all that and yes, I do know things can and have changed. Heck, I lived through most of the things you just mentioned. I was born during the last dictatorship, I remember seeing in the news about Collor (even though I was really young at the time), I saw the birth of the Real, etc. My "problem" is not a "cultural problem" but rather being fed up with all the crap I have to deal with everyday. Yes, I know Brazil is not the only country with problems such as these and definitely not the worst in the world (hell, it could be a lot worse. It could be North Korea). But I won't pretend I have faith in it anymore or that things are ok just because it used to be worse over 20 years ago. Not that I don't want to believe things will improve more but I have just reached a point in my life where I am just numb towards anything Brazil-related. I've reached a "f*ck it all" stage, I guess I could say. I know the government isn't the sole cause of it all but it is a huge part of the problem. That's why I focused on it. The industry is a big part but not as big as the government itself. Following your line of thought, one recent example I could mention on how some of these companies benefit from a market with little competitors is the war between Uber and taxi drivers as well as the mobile phone companies and WhatsApp. Not to mention the cable TV companies and Netflix. They complain about the new services to the government and demand them to be extra taxed and the people in power simply go and do it. It wouldn't happen the other way around, if the intention was to remove extra taxes. Not as quickly as they are imposed, at least. Regardless of what the companies want or not, the government is the one with real power. If they want something they will just do it and companies will have to cope with it. Trust me when I say this. I don't have a cultural problem. I know about the strong points this country has. I am just numbed by all the BS around us. It's so much dread from all sides that it's not that I can't really see the good in this country. It's just that the problems overshadow the good. I REALLY want to believe in Brazil but I just can't. Not anymore. I am tired, I am done. Besides, it does not help to look at the good things that we have and the things that changed for the better when there is so much wrong out there to be corrected. Just think/see the strong points will not do when the bow of the ship is sunk into an ocean of problems. It is now that we either pump the water out or abandon the vessel before it finishes sinking with us on board.

Very good. I'm also Brazilian and you really did your homework, even helped ME understand my own reality in some aspects. I would criticise the assossiation of Culture with Carnival stuff. It's not quite real, carnival stuff is a show-off brazil does for foreigners, it does not really dialogue with true brazilian culture, and many brazilians hate the objectification of women in this party, and other grave issues associated with it. But yes. Games are a cultural mirror, and if all the world produces games, its gonna be very enriching for all gamers

I'm from Brazil, and I'm sorry to say that the taxes WON'T go down for nothing, and when brazilians want any product, despite the industry (movies, tv, video games) it comes from, we have to pay a high price for it, pirate it, or look for it outside the country. Even the market and capitalism here are broken because of the size of the State and it's taxes and regulations. The PS4 for instance, costs BR$4000... equivalent to US$1800 or something... and the PS3 is only now reaching the US$400 mark (all this in a country with a minimum wage of US$300 or so). Our problems with videogame and entertanement prices will not be touched until our problems with the government are tackled. And like Matheus said, the general population isn't helping one bit.

About what you say in 4:05: I wish it were that easy - the exorbitant taxes levied (on everything) down here are used to fuel government corruption, more so than in most other LAC countries. The sad reality of Brazil's tax problem is significantly more complex than simply "not getting around to it". Other than that, your observations about the country's games industry are spot on. I am a big fan of your show.

Well, it's really rare to see foreigners talk about Brazil with this level of accuracy. In few more than 2 years after this video has been uploaded, we're finally seeing the game market here in Brazil start to show it colors. The great majority of AAA most important titles are all localized now (nearly all console exclusives, except from the ones from Nintendo). Steam became a big hit in Brazil, launching games with incredible prices that anyone can afford (Scribblenauts Unlimited was once sold for the equivalent of $3.60 dollars at the time). Ubisoft kind of became that company that came here first and is seeing how supportive Brazilians can be. Damn, we are even launching some pretty amazing indie game getting decent attention from internetional media, like Chroma Squad and Torin. Right now, the economy is facing a few problems, due to the more severe fight against corruption, but that can sprout some outstanding results. After all, you can't make an omelette withouth breaking some eggs. Well, guest that's it. Just know you've been doing an amazing job with this channel. Keep up the good work. I'm trying to start making my debut game and your channel has been a great help.

I reeeeeally doubt a large amount of investment would solve Brazilian's piracy problem. Piracy is so deep in Brazilian's culture, a cut in about two thirds of the price of video games would really not be enough to incentive people to not pirate. You see, the pirate stores out in the open are really, actually a lot more true than it sounds. You can pirate anywhere. It's just the norm. It would take a lot to change that. Most people who play games here aren't nearly as dedicated or serious about this stuff as most other countries. People are happy about having a PS2 or Xbox 360 and buying GTA and sports games. I hate to say it, but majority of population is just not willing to spend money on it. However I am really happy professional people like you and your team still have hope in our country. Thank you for this video! Not everyone here is just hue, zoeira and soccer, lol. There are still plenty of Steam users and intelligent people.

+Ridley i'd say fuck copyright then, and move to better financing options. let people pay for the game experience they have experienced, rather then for the "right" to play the game. so they can make a informed assesment what hte game is worth for them. also crowdfundung for the other side of the economic spectrum. and hell, maybe that's a way to get around these absurd taxes..
@Rickfernello
@Rickfernello 8 жыл бұрын
sofias. orange What you've said really sounds pretty good and perfect, however... People aren't as honest and honored as they could be. Hell, how many people do you know that have bought winrar's license? Yet almost everyone use it almost daily. It really could be good, if people were willing to actually spend money. But it won't work, SPECIALLY in a country like Brazil, one of the most dishonest and dishonored countries in the world. I really think your idea would be great, in a world where people are honest...
@sofia.eris.bauhaus
@sofia.eris.bauhaus 8 жыл бұрын
heh, people still use winrar? i really thought 7-zip (and a few other open source alternatives) replaced it by now. :D and when people aren't willing to spend money, copyright doesn't help either. at most it prevents people from having fun.. but when they start supporting the game creators as as directly as possible, they may have positive feedback. especially for a niche project it is quite possible that ones contribution to be a significant part of making a game possible, this should be way more motivation than having a game you otherwise would also have. (and a small portion of the price also going to the game creator). i don't really know brazil, (except the movie, hehe :P ) but with taxes like theye, i would be even less motivated to buy games then here in germany. ^^

Watching this almost 2 years later, I'm happy to see that things are changing already. Prices dropped considerably, for starters. They're still pretty pricey, but achievable. With this and better online services, people are more willing to spend money on games. Also, there's an steam equivalent called Nuuvem, and Steam itself now accepts more payment options and show prices in Reais for us. The indie scene in Brazil is kinda small, but strong and close-knitted - I think that they lack some local spice, most just lend successful formulas from the industry, but that's a slow process. Oh, also, Amazon is getting in here. They started selling Kindles and e-books only, but a few months ago the started selling physical books and are already crushing the local big bookstores in price and shipping times. They'll probably expand to other products on the next few years.
@juliahenriques210
@juliahenriques210 9 жыл бұрын
Aside from "the book", this video is spot on. The biggest issue in the Brazilian market is price. Taxes and retailer profit margins are quite high, and the average physical game can cost 30 to 50% of the minimum monthly wage. A console is a major purchase, averaging 2 to 4 minimum monthly wages. No wonder piracy is rampant: games are unafordable for most of the population. However... Changes in the way games are sold can lead to an increased "legalisation" of the market. It has happened to films, for example. When the average DVD dropped from R$ 60,00 to R$ 20,00 people immediately started purchasing them at licensed stores, and the piracy profile shifted largely to the latest or niche releases (judging by street markets in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo). When World of Warcraft was released in Brazil, Blizzard did its homework and discovered Brazilians were willing to pay a monthly subscription that actually wasn't so small as to make the game unprofitable. They compromised, lowered the profit margin, and were good to go. Brazilians buy stuff on Steam, PSN, and X-Box Live all the time, where prices are reasonable. Since download is the future for most of the game industry anyway, soon the retail store conundrum (charge high, few customers, charge higher to compensate) will be irrelevant.

Indeed, taxes dropped from 40% to 30% in consoles. The problem is that 1 USD evaluated to 1.80 BRL in the date the video was posted. Now, 1 USD evaluates 5.00 BRL. Consoles got more expensive. Not the same for digital media.

i warked as a game master in brazil. And it is very frustrating as a brazilian to see all that. I came to korea to study and i see a huge potential. Only need funding, and brazil could very well fund but people just don't know about it, or just dont care. In brazil, gamers and people who persue a gaming carrier is someone who does it for passion not money, cause we know we wont get any money from it cause if that shitty market. =/

Well, the piracy thing is has not really been true since the turn of the decade. The gaming market moved from the console wars in the late 90's to a huge playstation dominance. By the 6th gen, no one had neither an xbox nor a gamecube, we all just pirated our games. And we did it by buying some burned cds in many stores or stands generally located in the commercial center of our cities (those still exist). And those games (and movies) are not really cheap for 10 bucks you get a cd where someone recorded a torrent they downloaded for free, and many times someone acted like it is a steam sale and buys 100 R$ of games, without the benefit of getting a legiti copy. Not cheap at all, but since your average parent or son in the early 2000's didn't know how to mess with downloads and hacks, people used it to get loads of inlegitmet money. But by the 2010's things changed. When the ps3 was released sony decided it'd be really funny do make it cost 8 fucking thousand reais, leading the market to a sixth gen state until 2010, when consoles started costing payable 1200 reais (considering inflation, it pretty much 1.2k dollars , incredibly expansive, but much more affordable). The playstation name continued to dominate the market, and since we could't pirate the games, our market move away from that awful state I said before. Although you can get a hacked xbox 360 from the same shady stores that sell you for 10$ their torrents, most of those are not in fact hacked. So yes, nowadays piracy is no longer the dominant way Brazilians get their games, movies and music, but it definably was 6 years ago.

***** They are fucking hard to find in regular stores. Thankfully there are plenty of computer specialized stores where you can buy them, but those aren't ussually cheaper than if you asked them to build a computer for you, so you'll have to buy them online. Sadly some folks still buy those pirated pieces of shit thought IT IS THE FUCKING DUMBEST THING YOU COULD DO, and you can buy 1 yo AAA games on steam for 9, 15, 25 reais, when the fucking torrent on a disk costs 10 reais. You can literally get a better price for a AAA game + the benefit of actually owning it on a steam sale. Those stores have no right to sell those thing, be it movies, cds or games and are making tons of money out of uninformed people. Thankfully, like I said, they became a small, though considerable, amount of the sales of media here. Now I can say that brazilians actually buy their games.

Otávio Oliveira Bopp That is just not true, some games at steam still costs R$100,00 or more, so buying it for R$15,00 isn't such a bad idea, but yeah, a lot of games are coming with affordable price tags now, but some are still ridiculous. I am from Brazil Btw.

+steamnamebbderinvade 1246 There are indie companies, if that is what you mean, but it's rare to see video games from Brazil (Even here), And yes EC is right, the PS4 for example was to be priced R$4.000,00 and the peliticians only changed after many people conplained (At launch it was priced at R$3.200,00, I think, still a lot, but more affordable). But (as EC said) I do believe they will start to talk about it once they realise the potential of gaming as an entertainment media. Sorry for my poor grammar.

most would be like US games our entertainment culture is very based off the culture of the US(mainly because we rarely do make our own entertainment) some new ideas and maybe new genres might spawn from south america but it would take quite some time for that to happen and even more time for those new genres to gain footing in the market and become viable and profitable

The Speaker That's a bit too bad, I was hoping seeing how vibrant and vivacious the culture in South and Central American countries are, I thought some pretty interesting games could come through them. I once remember seeing a screenshot from a South or Central American game and I could see from the art style that it was heavily based off of South/Central American tribal art, like that of the Aztecs or Mayans. I thought it was really cool looking considering its different style and appearance from that of other games- I think its just the edge of what's possible from South/Central American developers.

lol, you're dead wrong about portuguese, whenever i see a game with portuguese language, it definitely is brazilian portuguese, rarely games make the distintion between brazilian and continental portuguese, they just slap brazilian portuguese in the game and call it portuguese, and believe me there's a big difference.

Ok, i am brazilian and i'm on my way of becoming a game designer and i must tell you... you WON'T be seeing us grow in the game industry for the next decade, or ever. Our economy have only gotten worse in the last years (remember that pricetag of 120 dolars for a game? As for today dolars are worth almost twice as much "reais" as they were when you posted this video). And still, the main reason we won't grow in the game industry is our "gamers", you would not believe how little support our indie games recieve here. Unless you are a big youtuber, ("A lenda do herói" is on Steam greenlight) you probably will not suceed. "Satellite rush" had a lot of potential and even global recognition but failed its kickstarter campain. I know, it is very sad. Most of our self-called "gamers" only play triple A games, specially COD, league of legends and minecraft. Oh! And we do have steam here, and it is actually our biggest win in the game industry, since steam converts dollars into very low prices and games end up being a lot cheaper than they should (at least in Brazil). "Gamers" here only care about ubisoft or EA. It's no wonder Nintendo abandonned us, and specially sad for me since i'm a big fan of Nintendo. Anyway, sorry for the big comment, it's an old video and you probably won't even read it, but still... And relax, i'm not criticizing your video, it was pretty good (and pleease stop putting that hat "representing" our culture, Carnival and gamers don't work together ;) )

I am Brazilian, and I am sad to say that this video is veeery wrong about it's perception of the Brazilian government! Our government and politicians could not care less about education or public health, they only care about increasing taxes to fulfill their own desires; the universities and schools are constantly in strike because of the ridiculously low salary our teachers get. We have one of the highest, if not THE highest taxes in the world, everything should be working as well as freaking Canada or better, but it does not because of the politicians' selfishness. It is really hard to say these things about my country, but its the truth :'(

I'm from Brazil, and I gotta tell you guys a little story: when the first or second version of the Ipad was released, it got prohibitive launching prices in here (you know, you'd look at the price tag and say "WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?"). Well, there's an apple factory in Brazil, and the company said the taxes were just too high, which made the prices skyrocket. Alright, the government gave Apple a tax isenction for Ipads built in Brazil... and yet, the imported Ipad would be cheaper than the one produced in Brazil. What Apple just did was extending even more their profit over the end product. I agree, we are overtaxed in many situations, specially manufactured goods , but most of the big companies (and I mean, in general, not only videogames and electronics) just sell stuff at higher prices because of some crazy elite status stuff. Most of the time they prefer getting smaller profits for the sake of a "selected market" than going into mass appeal.

Not only am I Brazilian, I worked for almost ten years for Devir Livraria, the company that brough roleplaying and Magic the Gathering to Brazil. I was their games import manager. What James doesn’t understand is that the games tax is not specific to games (and certainly not to gambling, as so e people hypothesize below): its main component is an industrial product tax that goes on almost all products produced outside of Brazil and brought i to the country. The BEST way to get around this would be to, somehow, reclassify games as printed material, which do not get this tax. Good luck with that: Devir tried for decades.

(I'm currently livening in BH Brazil) you are completely correct, its the lack of funding, i fell that the reason that people here buy pirated games is for the lowered price, i lived in a "lower class" area for a while, and the console that most people had, were PS2s, but in bigger cites (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, ect…) people do buy games consoles legally, hec, ive seen a game store here that sells games legally, but the problem is the hefty price tag here.

Extra Credits Extra Credits, great job on doing this video! I'm Brazilian, a programmer and a game developer and I can tell that the accuracy of the facts presented in this video was great! Piracy is a problem in Brazil, I've grown up getting my PS1 and PS2 non legal games only because of the crazy huge difference of price. The taxes that abroad games get is simply too high, no way we could afford paying it. Nowadays in my new life condition the difference of price from a steam game to a "free" non legal "pirate bay torrent" doesn't justify piracy, I buy all of my games in a legal steam way to support the industry. I am also a student of computer engineering in a public college (which I don't want to mention the name). The point is: I get payed (a little haha) to develop educational content for high and elementary school, we create mostly game puzzles to help kids to learn a science subject they have been thought in school by their teacher. It is more like a complement for normal school learning methods, our recent project was an app with data about the diseases: "taeniasis" and "cysticercosis", it tells about the parasite and its life cycle, pretty nice. We use mostly Unity3d and we have a nice time developing on it. I am an example of the developers James talked about, an educational content developer. My dream is to become an indie developer with my buddies from college. Imagine 8 crazy nuts computer engineering students living in the same house! Well, I'm one of them ^_^. The amount of crazy and brilliant ideas that have already been drawn in our white board is just ... T-T ... fantastic!. But it's true, it is really hard to make the ideas on paper become reality but there is a point from our game industry you guys didn't approach from Brazil (I really do recommend listening to the podcast from "Jovem Nerd" about game developers if you speak "Portuguese", it's pretty good). Brazilian developers are also gamers from a generation of non brazilian games being created, therefore the quality control a developer has here is not local, it's global. A Brazilian developer won't make a game with "brazilian quality" because a brazilian gamer has global quality in mind, they won't accept bad crafted stuff. I want to make games for the world, no way we can make games for a niche or even for the world by not competing with well polished global quality stuff. Brazilian game industry has a high probability to be established already built up and strong in therms of quality. Thats it, love the show, hope meeting you guys one day if possible. May the game industry go bigger and more creative!

A more structured and standardized format for these is not a bad idea, but by all means please do not cut down on the amount of detail. This video, although longer than most of yours was highly informative and I honestly cannot wait to see more like this.

I don't know how much helpful this information is, but I'm Brazilian and I'm studying Programação de Jogos Digitais(Digital game programming ) in middle school. We learn a lot about the game's situation on Brazil. But the simple fat that there are technical schools and colleges about game producing shows that there IS interest of the country and of the government to enter the market. Ps: I'm glad to see a episode of your work about my country, I quite a fan of your work and I salute you all with all my Hue.

I think you guys did a great job ! You made a very good, althought not entirely accurate view, of how the game industry works here. I agree there is alot of piracy here, some people i know paid for a PS2 and didn`t paid a single buck for their games. But we do have lisenced stores that sell these games legaly, thing is...200 reals is virtualy unconcivable to an average brazilian consumer, even more for the speed the gaming industry has been releasing games nowsdays. Still, I think you guys, Jame most of all, did a nice job and I hope we keep seeing more people supporting your channel !
