The NC500: 516 miles of undulating but beautiful Scottish Highland roads. In 2015, Mark Beaumont set the inaugural record, and now he's back to reclaim it. There will be a GCN+ documentary of Mark's challenge (coming 6 Dec 2022 👉 gcn.eu/cycling...) but first we join Hank in the support car, following Mark for what he has described as the hardest single-ride effort of his life!

On the text at the start, it's stated that Mark set the inaugural record at 32 hours. It was actually just under 38 hours. James McCallum brought it down to 32 hours 23 min in 2016. That stayed until Josh Quigley then took another hour out of it in 2020 (31 hours 19 mins), and then Robbie Mitchell then smashed that last year down to 29 hours and 5 minutes. A remarkable set of achievements by all concerned over the years, chapeau !

@@toosas I trained for 9 months having never ridden a road bike before. I'm quite lucky where I am in Scotland that a 15 mile route was around 1.5k of climbing so that was my training for a long time. I upped the distances as I rode more. Then I rode around the Isle of Dunoon as a typical nc500 day for us which was an eye opener for me in terms of time in the saddle and nutrition. Our team completed it over 7 days for charity.

It's a superhuman effort. Incredible work. I've cycled the short B869 Stoer/Drumbeg section of the route, it's only 20 miles or so but has some brutal hills/ramps on it. Ardbhair Brae coming in at 27% or thereabouts is particularly brutal. More amazing than the result is that Mark can actually sleep the night before an attempt like this.

From following Mark for a while I was inspired to give the NC500 in under three days a ago and managed to succeed. Massively inspirational ride but don’t think I will be trying a sub 29 NC500! Great job and keep up the fast work!

An absolute monster of a ride, chapeau to you Mr Beaumont. I am full of admiration of your astounding efforts. Buuuuuttttttt.... Am I the only one watching his toe off and hip rock in the early hours, then as the fatigue sets in the beautiful alternating sinusoidal curve Mark's spine draws and thinking either the cranks are too long or his seat has been set too high? 😳

Definitely a force 8 on the Beaumont scale. Those seas are roiling! Him, the support team, and the GCN production team. Maybe the Pacific Coast trail for the next challenge. And now it's time for something entirely different! That has the reputation as being really tough!

Beaumont is such a beast. the limits he push himself to are super human. Hank is a good motivator. Is there no challenge these two can't beat. Next on GCN, Beaumont and hank ride to the moon and back.
