Another ride and ramble this time with my mate on his MT-07. Showing off some of the lovely roads and sites to be seen within Dorset.

That little strip of road that connects the light house to the village is always fun at 3 in the morning in the pitch black 😂😂

Nice to see where I grew up! Need to get my full test done and find some time to get down there again.

Your not related to a Matt Hollinshead are you ? Perhaps he was Hollingshead. I worked with him a few years back. He lived on Portland. Anyone living in and around this area is very lucky.

@@velofan. Late reply, my bad aha. No unfortunately didn't know of any Hollinsheads around those parts growing up. All of my family are from the Midwest :) Was a great place to grow up, that I agree!

@@danielhollinshead3702 thinking back Iam sure Matt was hollinshead. So who knows maybe you guys related lol. I only put two and two together and got five because of the location of Portland. Anyway thanks for watching and commenting. One day I hope to grow a biker community. Maybe create a Facebook page to enable group gatherings.

The small roundabout at 10:16 has a newish load of houses on the left. They’re built on the site of the old Whitehead torpedo factory, which had its own jetty and carried out torpedo tests in the harbour. The pedestrian crossing traffic lights just after the roundabout are where the cycle trail, built on the site of the railway, joins the cycle path across the causeway to Portland. I was able to cycle on cycle paths from my house (about 5 miles or so north of where the trail joins the causeway) all the way to Portland Bill, only having to cross a couple of roads. I used to cycle down to Sven Cycles to visit my pal Darron, who built both of my bespoke bicycles. Happy days!

Ah wow, great bit of extra info here like this is what i want from these videos is peoples experiences and knowledge on then area i'am riding in. Bespoke bicycles sounds cool. My bicycle model is called i'm not a number by Pearson cycles. They claim to be the oldest bicycle shop in the world i think but if that's the claim they must be at least the oldest in the uk. Either way they make great bikes. I just don't push the pedals anymore just twist the throttle. Will get back on the pedals at some point when the knees down feel so bad.

I prefer cycling and motorcycling on my own for the same reasons you mention. Go at your own pace, stop where you want for as long as you want, and change the route as you go if the mood takes you. There are three lighthouses on Portland. They started with one, built a new one which made the first one redundant, which, in time, went out of use when the one on the Bill was built. You passed one of them at 23:17. One of my two bikes is an eBike, built to my specification from steel racing tubing. It has a torquey MTB motor, and there wasn’t a hill locally that I couldn’t ride up on it, including the one up to the top of Portland. I haven’t yet cycled around here, but some of the roads are in a shocking state, so I’ll be fairly selective where I explore. On the Velo, too, when I get it. I used to feel as though my guts were being rearranged on some of the bumpy Dorset country roads when riding my 1930 Scott, and I’ve taken a leaf out of pre-war TT riders’ book, and bought a body belt for riding around here on the Velo! Have you visited the Tout Sculpture Quarry on Portland? It’s worth a visit. It’s on the right along the road your pal took at the roundabout at the top of the long hill up to the top of Portland. Have you visited Billy Winter’s on the causeway between Weymouth and Portland? It’s a really good place to eat and drink, right by the harbour. It’s on the left heading to Portland a couple of hundred yards or so after you join the causeway. Rustic, but a great location.
