Hi All! In todays 10 min "Workshop This!" we explore the best acrylic paints for the gelli plate! We talk about paint binders, how binders effect the finish; gloss, satin or matte. Plus what results to expect when gelli printing based on the formulation. Gelli prints are used in a wide array of mixed media art applications. Gelli printing is a mono printing technique, the goal is the build up your layers one by one. I have a question, if you’re still answering for this video… im confused about high flow and pouring and fluid paints. What are they and can they be used on the plate? BUT boy was I glad to find this video!! It cleared up a lot of questions and confusion I had. Im certainly willing to experiment and learn of course but it is awfully nice to get a clue or two so you know what youre seeing and why in your experiments… nice not to entirely reinvent the wheel! GREAT VIDEO.

I gelli printed for a long time, but it wasn't until I started mixing the different types of paints that I was able to make papers I love. I use Liquitex, Golden, Blick, Craft, etc. The Arteza metallics and iridescents are transformative. I love watching your videos while I make prints! It's like we're friends.

Robyn I just love these little "bite size" 10 minute videos! Even though I have absorbed some of the knowledge through your workshops, getting this concentrated, focused information helps reinforce some of what I've heard before. I'm in Australia so many of those brands are not available here. I've found Mont Marte, a cheap local brand is really good on the gel plate, as is Amsterdam acrylics. Unfortunately, Golden and Liquitex are often prohibitively expensive for us. Great and educational video though xxxx

I got empty paint tubes, mixed a few colours together ( i made myself a dark purple nearly black) AND cut the bottom of said empty tube and ladled my purple in. I sealed with my hair straightener and it works brilliantly. I hope this crazy tip helps Oh I put tin foil on the hair straightener to prevent melted plastic on it and yes, it makes a mess😊

Question...does the translucency of the paint impact the pull off the plate?

I love my Arteza Fancy Black. The problem I have with it and other metallics is they seem to be hard to roll out. I get a very streaky coat on my plate.

Metallics can be tricky, they need small of paint on the plate and using a light hand to roll them out so as to not get the brayer marks. Arteza metallics are superior over the cheaper craft paints because they seem to use a sufficient amt of pigment to binder Thx for commenting :)

I have been experimenting with maimeri, which is made in Italy and also pebeo I think made in Spain, both being a more affordable option than golden (which I love, but isn't always in my budget). Thank you for sharing. Binders 🤣

I have had great results with the Pebeo pearl acrylics. When I mixed the Pebeo gouache tempera in that did NOT have great results 😆)

There’s one of my paints that seems to pull the other colours off really well, and I hadn’t realised this was the reason (higher quality). It’s a pearlescent paint so I had thought that was the reason but what you’ve said makes more sense. So good to know.

Other than the binders, why are the top of the line paints expensive? Can one add binders to the inexpensive paints? If so, to what proportion?

I think it has to do with the purity of the pigments. For ex Golden brand actually uses pure minerals for their colours. More expensive thst way.

The more expensive paints have less additives, extenders, or fillers. Sometimes meant to give a certain texture but often time added simply to cut cost. The more expensive paints have a higher pigment to binder ratio. So more of the good stuff I.E. Color and what makes the color stick! You can add binders yes, that in the simplest form, is what mediums are such as the matte medium.

Robyn, thank you for this video! Being a newbie in acrylic painting, I make so many mistakes and thought buying only Amsterdam paints was a good idea (for my level of spending)! The Amsterdam black always goes on too heavy, for example! Since I just discovered your channel, I need to ask about transparent/ translucent paints- as far as I can tell, they aren’t labeled as such. Please explain! Thank you!

On the Amsterdam tube, and most paints, there'll be a small box or icon indicating transparency/opacity of paint. Hope this is helpful ❤
