Gotherington Halt on the Gloucester and Warwickshire Steam Heritage Railway is only half owned by the railway, the other platform being privately owned. Fortunately the owner is a rail enthusiast and he has a vast collection of railway memorabilia which is laid out to enhance this otherwise lonely spot. The overall effect is to present the station as it might well of looked in the day. Well worth a visit
Home to the adventurous subscriber. As well as films we have a bi-weekly Vlog to keep up to date on the previous and next week’s videos, and a chance for all to air their views on a variety of subjects, why not join in.
My passion has been walking, a while ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and walking does not come naturally any more, however the more I walk the easier it gets, for now anyway. I hope these videos will inspire others to keep going and hanging on in there. I try to cover variety of subjects, such as old abandoned railways, and canals. I love the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, with its rich history and I usually take my camera whenever we holiday in the southwest and Cornwall. The rugged coastal paths are a magnet for anyone who loves dramatic scenery. I live close to the Cotswolds Hills and have done quite a lot of walking around there, recently, following some of the lovely rivers. Hill walking on the Malvern’s is a challenge but worth the effort. I try not to let Parkinson’s get me down and take every opportunity to get out with my camera and film, I hope you enjoy watching. P.W.

Hello Ron - greetings from Poland What a gorgeous video. Real nostalgia served up from an authentic country station. A beautiful site and congratulations to the family that own the station buildings - they have done an excellent job in preserving yesteryear.

Delightful portrait of what must be one of the most beautifully preserved Halt's on any railway with a cornucopia of memorabilia to engage your attention while you wait for the arrival of one of the GWR's immaculately turned-out engines. It doesn't look like there's a speck of dust on the loco's metalwork. The pine trees and the distant hills add to the atmosphere of the place. As, you say, Gotherington is certainly worth a visit - and maybe - one day - that departure board really will announce the next train to Leamington Spa and Stratford upon Avon.

Good Morning, Ron. I’ve been through Gotherington a couple of times, on the train. You can’t appreciate what has been achieved on the site, when you’re in a moving carriage. Your beautiful film really brings the station to life in great detail. All the original signs and advertising boards, the trolleys and odds and ends, fence posts, of course essential for a vintage railway station recreation. Wonderful. A lovely tribute to the railway. Take care. Ron.

Agree with all the good comments, there are two privately owned restored on the former worcester Bromyard Leominster line at rowden Mill and fence, they have been buitifully restored to twin track passing loop full cattle dock and a small collection of wagons and the odd coach. At one time there was talk of rejoining the stations as they are only a few miles apart but unfortunately that didn't happen but still they are worth a visit. I go now and again to look down from the railway bridges that over look the stations to admire the hard work put in by the owners. The owners use to open them to the general public once or twice a year but not sure if that still happens. Keep up the good work always entertaining better and more professional than some of the programs on TV regards Sam Woodward 😊

Hi Ron. Those fenceposts must be proud, still fulfilling their fencely purpose. If I owned that station, I'd be on those benches as often as I could! What a nice day out, thank you. Off to do some eclipse-watching tomorrow. In Toronto, we get 99.7% totality but one of my colleagues suggested that we should take all the year 12s to a place called Grimsby, outside of Toronto, for the full effect. Six busloads to squeeze out another .3%. The trip would usually take an hour and a half, but they're predicting massive traffic jams as people head towards Niagara Falls on the same route for the same reason. I'll be lucky to get home by late evening. OVM won't be pleased. The weather has been cloudless for the past two days, but tomorrow promises to be cloudy, with a chance of rain and too late to cancel the buses, so a nice wet day ahead...! Have a good week Ron.

So much nostalgia Ron. Beautiful piece of filming. Do the trains always stop there, or did they think you were waiting to board? I like the way you concentrate on the locomotives driving wheels and connecting rods. Made me feel as if I'm actually standing there. Could almost smell the steam. Great film Ron. I really enjoyed watching that.

Good Morning Ron, was it worth it? Damn right! In spades! What a wonderful station although like you I'm a little bit dubious of some of the details. You did force me to go look at Google Earth to see what was in the back garden and he does indeed have a few yards of track. Although nothing on it. I'm paying my own visit to a preserved line - the Battlefield line a little further north. Ride all day for a tenner and you can be a 'Driver for a fiver' as well. I expect that queue will be a little long. Although it doesn't state how far you drive, perhaps the length of the platform. There is a model railway show for club members - I joined the club! I have started my flexi retirement. I'm on a 4 day week now. This week has been tough with the bank holiday - I had to work only 3 days this week. Hopefully the weather will start permitting all of us out of the house soon although my garden resembles a swamp right now. Good old Gloucester clay! Cheers Simon

Hello again. That was such a lovely nostalgic trip for me. We went up and down that line so many times. If we went first class we often fell asleep with the lovely comfortable seats and the gentle rocking motion of the carriages. I was very surprised that you resisted getting on and having a short trip back to Winchcombe or Cheltenham. You really should join the GWR and every now and again the owners of Gotherington have an open day and he might let you have a go on the pump trolley. Delightful tea room at Winchcombe or great lunch at Toddington too. Just giving them a plug. Since I have lived here I have done one trip after Covid all the way to Broadway. Such an achievement. What’s on next week?

Rowden mill and fencote are worth a look there's a spectacular spiral bridge at Suckley just past the cross keys pub leigh station is now a private property but still there, lulsly station is also still standing. Been told the vieduct across the river team is there but never found it to be truthful. The station yard at Bromyard still has the remains of the Bromyard to Linton light railway wich ran on part of the original track bed towards worcester for about a mile. The worcester Bromyard Leominster Might be worth more investigation?. On another note after watching your video showing the straight view down the track from ashchurch station reminded me of a photo taken on 9th July 1955 showing the unusual crossing made over the main lineby the Tewkesbury evesham line. This photo can be found in the book British Railways past and present book 33 page 116 and 117. This photo also shows something that wil interest you a midland rail semaphore wooden signal post. If you don't have this photo i will send it to you somehow not quite sure how to do this will need daughter's help, ( not of the computer or technical age. regards Sam

Mornin' Ron, What a treat that was! Thanks for taking us along with you I spotted the two squirrels on the path a 1:26 and wondered why you didnt mention them but then we had the delight of seeing them both perched on the fence just a little bit later. Was it me or did they appear to be partially red? I didnt think the two species mixed, actually thinking about it, I'm not sure if I have ever seen a red squirrel in real life, I think the nearest to me in the UK would have been on the Isle of Wight, only seen grey ones here. I was just musing on the platform on the private side when you pointed out the difference, to the halt side. I think theyve used paving slabs but it all merges quite well, obviously some parts have been modified the main building didnt look original but its been built so well it just looks perfect. I spotted the sign for Mazawattee Tea and had a quick look on wiki, its a fascinating read, anyway it says "the name is perhaps based on the Hindi "maza", which means "pleasure or fun", and the Sinhalese "wattee", which means "a garden". This was shortened to "Mazawattee" and duly registered as a trademark for retail sales in January 1887" Quite an approriate sign for the station house and garden i think. This week I ventured up one of the valleys to see the hydro electric power station I've been following the canal that provide water from the top of the valley some 1200' higher. The river was in full flow and had a bluey white colour to it which I've only see from glacial water in Norway. In the end I climbed the zig zagging path up the valley side to get some photos of the high mountains and in the end got most of the way to the top. I kept saying I'm only going to the next bend in the path but I just kept going and going, I'm glad I did in the end!! This one was well worth the effort, a great video, well done!! Have a great weekend!!

@@michaelpilling9659 Hi Michael, Thank you. Its interesting I dont think I've sen a red squirrel here but wikipedia says that there is only this type of squirrel in Spain (40 variants of the species). Just had a look back at some photos we took in Cazorla National Park in 2006 and the ones we saw had very dark fur maybe a tint of red. I'm sure we will have some in our woods nearby I'll have to pay more attention I think. Have a great weekend!!
