My shubunkin goldfish were starting to lose their color. It wasn't their food or water quality. Could it be the light I was using...was it the wrong light?
Chromatophores/ pigmentation was being lost... I upgraded my lights
Glowrium full spectrum led light with moon sway effect.

Great update Chris. That light is top notch. In theory, if the color loss is due to insufficient light, and not genetics, you can still breed them to get the results you originally kept them for. The next generation should be fine as you know. It just sucks when You want to look at them, and display them on camera.

Text Chris. I'm pretty sure I'm going to keep it or both of them for that matter but we'll see and it could have been you know stressed but I doubt it. Not that that quickly. I don't know who knows. Could have been BH water temperature but water temperature was good. Was in the mid 70s so I really don't know. I put it down the light and because that's what I can only be. That's just a sort of educated guess. Thanks again Chris. Merry Christmas!

I had no idea they could change color in such dramatic ways, especially due to light. Really too bad about the one with the black vertical stripe, he was one of my favorites. The moon mode is definitely something I haven't seen before, I like it a lot better than just blue lights for night. Good review, Chris, I hope this will stop the color loss in your fish! 🤞🤞

Text Terry. I was really shocked at disappointed to see the female with the black vertical striped loose that marking. Especially after it's been there for 3 years and it happened so quickly. I remember you commenting on it and liking it, but I have others that have similar markings that I can fall back on depending on what happens. I really glad you like this light. I think you would like one anyways. All the best, Merry Christmas! Thanks again

So many different things can affect pigmentation in fish, water quality, food, lighting, and of course genetics. I know one fellow who had an beautiful tancho kohaku he paid a lot of money for with a perfectly round and centred red (hi) spot on the head . After a couple of years the spot entirely disappeared leaving him with a white fish. The colouration of my own koi varies based on being indoors or outdoors and the amount of natural light and vitamin D they receive, definitely better when outdoors in natural light. Hopefully the new light will make a difference to your shubunkins. Looking forward to an update in the next few months. 👍🏻

Thanks buddy. Yeah I know you're not a fan of those but you're a fan of color and quality fish. I've heard the the same comments about the other people with high-end koi. That would be just heartbreaking to spend that kind of money and to end up with a dull white fish. Yeah this light is pretty cool. I think you would like it anyways. All the best, my friend. Merry Christmas!

I have raised many fish outdoors in the past years, not in ponds but in concrete tanks and the like and the ultraviolet light of the sun colors the fish in a unique way, also having a significant impact on their diet. The spectrum of this LED ceiling light is truly excellent. Have a nice week Chris

Sorry two of your fish lost their colors. Hope the new light keeps it from happening to your other tank of beauties. I have the timer lights on all my tanks but ooh that moon phase I think would look nice and give them more natural look as they’d experience outdoors adjusting the intensity if the moon to mimic when it’s full moon or new moon. I will check them out! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! - Maureen

Thanks a lot Maureen. I think you would actually really like this light, especially as you can control them. Moonlight from 1% all the way up to 100. I keep mine at 1%, but if you know you had a tank in the hall or in a living room where you want a little additional light, a 10% would look pretty cool. Yeah I was disappointed to see those fish lose the colors. They're like koi in that respect and it's disappointing. That's for sure Thanks again. Have a Merry Christmas. All the best

Good review on a nice lighting product option, very informative Chris. Light spectrum plays an important roll in many life forms and definitely can affect pigment in the skin. I wish you all the best in results for this trial with your Shubs. I was happy to hear you mention genetics, this is a major factor for colour longevity,.. just a small point-male ‘carp’ tend to peak sooner than females with colour which in turn means they ‘fade’ sooner as well. You talked about water quality but left out chemistry, not the same. Reds tend to wash out in higher pH (KH/GH) while for blacks that hits the mark. Also, stress can and will cause colour loss,… stress comes in many forms-stocking density to spawning to netting/handling just to name a few. Keeping goldfish/koi indoors has many challenges compared to outdoors. I hope you find the Balance for success.

Great info. I had not put it to stress as these fish had live inside before and weren't showing any other signs and didn't seem to affect the others. As for sexing I had not considered that .. I am hoping that between the better light and then going back outside next season that there is an improvement What an excellent comment.. thanks so much

It looks like a nice light, I don't think your fish lost their color from the light because it was so fast, I think it could be from stress from the change of the environment, I bet they will color back up when you put them back outside next year, even one of my new shubunkin lost a few small bb size inky black dots in a few days, they are completely gone that's why I think it is from stress but who really knows for sure, awesome review on the new light, it will be interesting to see if the color comes back.
@stubbsaquatics6080
@stubbsaquatics6080 6 ай бұрын
I really don't know for sure. I'm stuck on what it could be. I don't think it's stress just simply because they've been inside the four and the one I had for 3 years and there's nothing that would be adding stress that not already there. I'm wondering if it's more genetic than anything else or as someone else pointed out. You know it could be the sexing but being one was male and one was female. I'm not sure. Goldfish like a koi can loser color due to many factors from water temperature to pH and then so on but to happen this quick it really shocked me and I know I've been feeling of quality feeds and there's nothing that I know of that would be adding stress nor did any of the other fish lose their colors. So I'm still guessing but might take the chance on lighting right? So I I put better lighting in for them and hopefully that helps. So far no other fish have lost any coloring. Thanks again buddy. Merry Christmas!

Chris I'm reading to use a darker substrate to retain the black colors, could the fish be lightening up to blend in with the ground color of the light substrate? also they say a higher ph of 7.6 to 8.2 but To me that seems kind of high to me.

I wonder if the change in colour due to the change in light is a defence mechanism that Goldfish have. Something along the lines of there's more light, so more black is required to blend into the background to avoid any predators. 🤔 If this is the case, I wonder if the environment alongside light plays a part in pigmentation. If there were darker hardscape and/or darker plants, would there be more black pigment on them, as they would want to blend into the background as much as they can?
@stubbsaquatics6080
@stubbsaquatics6080 6 ай бұрын
Thanks Justin. There's so many factors that could play into this. I think genetics has a lot to do with it. It could be difference in water temperature. pH. And the sex of the fish all can play roles. Being that these fish had been inside before, I don't think it was a stress so it's just a guess. But I think it's either light condition or it's genetics. But I am not a scientist and it's only a guessing game right? As far as a defense mechanism, I don't think so again that would go back to stress and I can't see that there's anything that's actively stressing the fish, especially when they're in two different tanks, right? There's no big fish that is picking on them. Was really weird with the three-year-old that the block just disappeared though. Like almost instantly and thanks again buddy. Hope you're feeling better. Hi Kris. I will do my best to explain it . First you need to turn light off. Click on power button until red light comes on. Then select, the 6,9 or 12. You set that for whatever time you want the light to come on in real time.. for example do that at 9 am. The light will always come on at 9. The moonlight will always be on you just select the lowest setting if you don't want much moon light. I hope that helps
