I did this on an early mix of mine because I didn't "know better." I used a convolution reverb preset called "rock club" or something and dialed it back to 10%. It sounded awesome. But I didn't do it again for a while because I had "learned" not to do stuff like that. And so I distrusted my ears. Lately, I've been getting back into doing it. I find that any convolution reverb modeled on a room sounds pretty good, but it's especially effective if you think about the vibe of a song. If it's a punk rock song, you might want to pick a "basement club," where if it's a jazz song you'd want to pick something more elegant.

The reason you're "not supposed to do it" is because often there's at least a few tracks that don't do well with reverb in any given mix, and the "approved" way of doing it, is to send almost every track to reverb (or a mix of 2-3 differing lengths of) on fx sends set to 100% wet. This way you can pick and choose every track's amount of reverb, and not send the tracks that don't really want reverb on them to it. However, this takes a ton more time, and if you are ending up going to send EVERYTHING to the reverb anyway, and by roughly the same amount, and the reverb is already the shape you want it (frequency wise and dynamically), there's very little reason not to use this technique. It does however afford less overall control, like you can't EQ or compress your reverb on it's own anymore (another reason people tend to use fx sends more).

This is great, I often feel the high end of cymbals can stick out and feel offensive to me. I'm hopeful techniques like this can tame what I'm hearing. Love the highlights on the cursor to show what you are doing on the DAW helps focus on where to look.

I’m making melodic techno and This technique really helps the transitions in the breakdown and has given the whole mix a little more clarity.. gonna go thru some more tracks and I’ll give it another try on a different reverb I just tried convultion reverb as a quick go to and it works a treat techno peeps ❤ This is the way

I actually tried this technique but in a lil different way, I ve set 3 room channels but with different pre delays and send the tracks kinda like it would be in a live stage , depending where the instruments would be , everything of course in parallel and you don't really hear it but when it's off something is missing , it's a good trick to make the mix sound 3D

Usually I would put this on the Master bus, as you want to keep unity gain, It is not prefferable to automate anything on the master bus, instead I will create a mix but rout every bus and track to the mix bus and then route to mix bus to the master bus. with the mix bus you can now automate, do sends to fx busses and shape the sound of the track with anything but dynamics processor, as I do like one or two plugins on the master bus, but only dynamics processors, all the other processors should imo be happening before the master bus.

I put the EW Spaces I digital on master and then compress with the MV2, both a very tiny bit only. THis mix all together but without creating confusion (but for orchestral music, with long transients)

any ideas what other plugins would do this apart from UAD ones ? Great video and technique
@AlexWhiteComposer
@AlexWhiteComposer 9 ай бұрын
Yes! You can use any reverb plugin that allows for a very short decay time (reverb length) and preferably isn’t something like a spring reverb which will have a very identifiable character (that spring sound). What DAW are you using? I might be able to recommend something specifically in that DAW!

@@AlexWhiteComposermaybe something from Ableton? I use a room snare reverb which I dial back quite a bit on my drums. I wonder if any other room reverb would work on the main

Does this work in edm?? I make techno and on my master bus I shy away from it because I’m unsure of how to use it correctly
@AlexWhiteComposer
@AlexWhiteComposer 9 ай бұрын
Yes, it absolutely does! It’s style irrelevant, because you’re not trying to use it to make “the sound of reverb”. You’re adding a “glue”… a cushioning and common element to everything in the mix - it should only be something you can hear kind of “padding out” the sounds - especially on sparser sections or breakdowns. It’ll add an almost 3D dimension to the mix that makes things sound wider and fuller, but never a sense of actual reverb. It’s all about the gaps, not the core of the sounds.

@AlexWhiteComposer
@AlexWhiteComposer 8 ай бұрын
Honestly, any reverb that can have a really short decay time! They all sound a little bit different but you’re looking to use it in very small amounts! Think like between 2% - 10%, and 10% would probably be on the high side! Just listen out for it in the gaps, rather than on top of the audio itself!

wouldn't you first mix (glue) the song properly before trying something like this?
@AlexWhiteComposer
@AlexWhiteComposer 9 ай бұрын
No! This is very much one of those processes that you mix into! It’s the same kind of thing as mixing into a compressor! Bear in mind there are no rules, lots of folks mix very differently from each other, but setting up a selection of plugins on your mixbus as the very first stage of your mix is very common, and this is a great first process to get started!
