I just worked on one of those. It had an oil leak coming from the vacuum pump and good thing it did. When I pulled off the pump this tabs were broken up and about to fall into the motor. I used a magnet to get the pieces out. It took a while but it could have been worse. And for those new to this change, change the seal as well or you’ll end up with an oil leak.

Did a 2017 Malibu last month with a 212K on it. Scanner said it was bad. I did pads all around and we went for a test drive (I service cars for a small used car lot) and the brakes were tight. Code said this was bad. Pulled it off and it was all broken up inside. I think the aftermarket part was like $35 and I put it on in like 30 minutes. Charged $65 labor. Pretty much $100 for the customer and the car was fine.

100% true. also beware of low mileage neglected motors if you pull that pump and its sludged that motor is toast. I've recommended replacing engines for that the tech said no put a cam and pump in it they always come back within 1k with the same issue.

I do hvac for a living but have worked on a lot of cars. I sometimes walking to a place with my girl I say that trucks got about 100,000 miles and I hope he he changed this this and that. If not it’s going to be hella costly later on. I get a kick out of it

Man I wish I kept my 1997 4.3L S-10 5 speed. 292K with minimal issues. Traded it cause no one could diagnose my issue, a seasoned mechanic figured it out within 2 minutes after I described the issue a couple of years later. Thank you for all your excellent advice.

I had a vacuum pump in my 86 300zx but I threw it in the trash last December along with everything that handled EGR, A/C, cruise control and the auxiliary air intake valve. All garbage. Fuel pressure solenoid and headlight sensor, garbage. Charcoal canister and idle air control valve, straight into the trash haha.

When I worked at a Chevy dealership I had to replace both the vacuum pump and the camshaft because it wouldn’t start unless I disconnected the camshaft sensor and when I would pull it into the shop that thing was hard to stop lol

I had just got a 22 Malibu, I had seen other reviews stating the same thing, of course everyone says its avoidable with the right amount of maintenance, but I will definitely take your word for it! Whats also crazy 😂, I sold my 3.6L Avenger for it, so I had plenty of knowledge about those damn roller lifters 😂 Love the videos my man!

Why is there a vacuum pump on a gasoline engine? I mean as a secondary source of vacuum used specifically for the brakes maybe for safety reasons. That way if there is a vacuum leak and manifold vacuum drops off, you still have the pump to supply vacuum to brake booster?
@edwinblessing9811
@edwinblessing9811 Ай бұрын
I didn't even know that vacuum pumps were on these engines. I thought that all the vacuum was from the manifold on the engines.

Some of these newer engines are meant to work wide open, so I don't think there's much vacuum at all.

Modern turbo engines do not create a lot of vacuum on their own, so a brake vacuum pump is necessary.

Had to do this with my 2019 malibu in my backyard. Apparently when the pump locks up, it can destroy the end of the exhaust cam, and send big chunks of metal throughout the cylinder head.

Yknow, the nightmare also comes when the vacuum pump pieces knock the cam reluctor off sync, so now your timing is off, and you cant get the car started, or it runs bad. And the only way you can tell, is visually comparing a new cam against the old one. Compare the lobe positions vs the reluctor windows. Bad design

My vacuum pump gave out at 100k. I replaced it and I now have 150k. How often should this part be replaced ? It was super scary when it gave out on us the first time we were in mountain roads on the hwy and lost all brakes on a downhill with no check engine light or anything.
