I recently did the VLOM delete on my 2015 6.2L direct injected Corvette with only 28k miles on it after #6 exhaust lifter stuck on the highway at 70 mph. I changed out 4 AFM lifters on the passenger side. During the VLOM delete I had to cut the slot in the aluminum sleeve you include with the release tool. I also had read your emergency UTube post about the oiling hole for the high pressure injector pump. So I drilled the small hole in the sleeve that faces the solenoid hole and checked it with compressed air. BTW, I get about 40 psi at idle when cold at about 50F on startup. At 200F water temp I get about 30 psi at idle. Also did the gasket cut mod where they seal to the oil towers. You can’t remove the ECM on the C7 Corvette to reprogram it and turn off AFM, so I had to purchase HP Tuners which needed 4 credits so that cost me $600. The car runs great now. BTW, I also had a bent pushrod at that bad lifter location and replaced it with new stock one. Also purchased complete chrome moly set of aftermarket pushrods that I intend to swap in when I get a chance.

Can you point me to the emergency KZfaq post regarding the oiling hole for the injector pump? My VLOM is bad on my 2016 Yukon and they’re on national back order so I’m thinking that I’ll need to do this and I want to make sure I have all the information before trying it.

First of all.. thank you so much. My truck i just bought 3 months ago and this lifter bs happens within 2000 miles of owning it. It doesnt even have 110,000. Crazy but im glad im found your videos and youve explained everything very well. I just bought your vlom plug last week and didnt all the labor. Replaced all the lifters vlom plug and cut the gasket of oiling towers. And of course all new head bolts and all the other gasket and stuff. Actually my first time doing this and it sounds/ runs great. I just finsih and havent driven it yet but i just had to tell you and everyone. Youve saved me alot of money. Thank you so much!

2015 Tahoe 5.3 PPV police package This might be useful info for others. Got P0300 error. Cyl 1 and 4 repeated misfires. Oil pressure good (39psi). Thought it was ignition related. Replaced plugs, coils, and wires (they were due anyways). Misfires Still there. It would misfire at around 1200-1700 and bog/struggle. Multiple gears. Was pretty certain it was stuck lifters so bought your plug and tool, sent my ECM for tune. Took vlom out and Valve covers. Discovered that all lifters were good. So, no lifters were stuck. Examined the vlom and had signs of leakage. Plugged it up, no leak. Put everything back together. Running fine so far. No more misfires. Im thinking the leak was enough to cause unintended AFM/DOD activation on 1 & 4 cylinders. Was happy I didnt have to fix it with a hammer 😄

I've done numerous afm deletes on the non direct injection units but only done one on the newer direct injection models. I love the trick you came up with to "un stick" a lifter. I use an old Oldsmobile pushrod cut at the correct angle with the help of a slight burst from a air hammer. the vibrations seem to do better than hammer blows. I also use small spring type hose clamps with the ears ground off smooth to block the oil hole to the solenoids along with the gasket snip. Steve's GM reprogramming in Michigan does all my ECM deletes for me. Extra $50 bucke for him to delete the DI units tho.

Do you have video on how to cut the gasket on the Lt vlom and can you buy a new gasket for it to go around the outside?
@azreeal1
@azreeal1 5 ай бұрын
The solenoids are leaking because the manifold has to be installed on the block for the fiber plate to seal. A new one will do the same.
@CrazedPerformanceRepair
@CrazedPerformanceRepair 5 ай бұрын
That makes zero sense. The solenoid pack is attached via rivets to the manifold (VLOM). Nothing happens to the solenoid pack by bolting it to the block besides it being able to direct oil to the oil tower when the AFM is activated. It's identical in design to the previous generation besides the oil passage being on front of the engine and the rear now has a hole for the HPFP. If you test the older design this way they don't have the issues these do.
@azreeal1

The seals will cross feed without the manifold bolted to the block. Try a new one with air pressure@@CrazedPerformanceRepair
@michaelhallman6196
@michaelhallman6196 Жыл бұрын
I imagine the pin hole is so the unit doesn’t get air locked rather than for oiling the high pressure fuel pump lifter. Under normal conditions, oil will be sent to the VLOM to deactivate cylinders and the air has to be able to escape so oil can enter the passage ways. I can’t imagine it being related to the HPFP. But, I could be wrong.
@CrazedPerformanceRepair
@CrazedPerformanceRepair Жыл бұрын
Actually that's a really good point. They may have done that because of all the issues GM had in the past with a AFM system. Perhaps this was their attempt to solve the issue even though it was clearly related to lack of oil pressure during activation not air pockets. Kind of like how they thought that relief valve in the oil pan was causing the oil consumption. Total fail on their behalf It was all in the valve cover.

I have an 08 Tahoe. I replaced #4 Intake lifter 2 times for failing on start up. I have also replaced the VLOM with a Dorman part. The same lifter has failed again within 200 miles. You commented that oil pressure is the cause of most lifter failures. I'm really not understanding if oil pressure is the cause, the VLOM solenoid leaking is a possible cause, which has been replaced, what in your opinion is the root cause? Thanks in advance for any assistance!
@CrazedPerformanceRepair
@CrazedPerformanceRepair 4 ай бұрын
The root cause of the AFM side of a lifter is always lack of oil pressure during activation, or oil pressure when it's not being activated. The pressure required to disengage the AFM locks fast enough for the timing events is 26psi or greater at the lifter in those oil towers. If ever the lifter sees less during activation the locks will bind causing damage to the shelf the lock engage with. Also, if solenoids leak pressure while it's not supposed and the locks partially disengage it will cause the same damage. Pre 2015 AFM non direct injection engines don't often have leaking VLOM assemblies. They usually fail from lack of pressure during activation. Post 2014 with direct injection AFM usually fail because the VLOM assembly leaks. They are also known to bend pushrods but that's another topic/issue.

The lifter release trick won't help with that issue since the lifter isn't stuck. What you need is something like the pushrods I sell. They can be found at www.crazedperformancerepair.com/product-page/pushrod-upgrade and will make sure your factory interference issue is no longer a problem. be sure to do your part though and make sure all related components are functioning correctly though and not lose or something.

@CrazedPerformanceRepair Жыл бұрын
@@acourtneylawson2065 You probably have lifters that are leaking too badly and soaking the valve cover in oil. This causes the PCV system to be overloaded and unable to drain the oil out of that poorly designed valve cover. You can check it by starting out with the valve cover off and seeing how far the oil shoots out. A good functioning lifter will barely have any oil come out of the rocker area. If your lifters are the problem it will shoot oil darn near over the fender. Your lifter kept collapsing because you haven't shut off the system in the tune and it keeps activating. Cutting the gasket will only sort of solve the issue. It will also create more issues in that every time the system activates it will leak oil into the valley cover like crazy for a moment dropping oil pressure. Also it will throw a code for the computer after a while and eventually cause it to enter limp home mode. You need to deactivate it in the tune, I recommend LT1Swap.com for doing this service.

Just found you recently and I am hoping that you are still paying attention to comments. 2015 GMC 5.3 and the garage said it was either a sheared off lifter or cam lobe. They said they do an engine swap when this happens, which makes sense to me. But if it is JUST a stuck lifter (here's hoping), that is infinitely cheaper! I am thinking they just don't want to do this, unaware, or don't want the liability (I am in Maine and no shops have signed up to do this work yet). I am taking the truck back and bought the release tool today. But, is it true that keeping these engines in "manual" of the 6 speed transmissions keeps the VLOM system from activating? If so, can't I just run it like that INSTEAD of VLOM mod or delete?
@CrazedPerformanceRepair
@CrazedPerformanceRepair 10 ай бұрын
Must no have actually watched this video. If the VLOM is leaking it will activate lifters when its not suppose to leading to damage. No shutting off the system electronically will solve a mechanical failure. You have to do both the Mod and Shut it off in the tune. I recommend LT1swap.com for the system disable. These direct injected engines are a must to have both done. They are also prone to bending pushrods. You might want to check that first before you dig in to deeply. I do also offer a pushrod to solve that issue as well. the Tool, Plug, and pushrods can all be found at my website CrazedPerformanceRepair.com as well as its best to message me there for a much better likely hood of response.
