Love the control unit. " This way That way ". I'll bet that's been on there for years, no one these days would think of putting anything like that on there. It's to patsy. It's old scool. The maze of xing's, point's and junction's going through the main hub was boggling. Couldn't you build an awesome Marshalling yard for your Trains. N scale. The hum of that old donk and the rest of all those killer sound's. Awesome.

Always love seeing big old EMD's from down under. Old girls sound like they're running in top condition! I love that SSR keeps these things running in revenue service!

GM10 and GM22 are back at it again. This time they are on the AK test train. They really did a nice job taking the AK test train through NSW and Victoria.

Nice one mate--I liked the B&W bit towards the end--saw the satellite dish on the roof of our building :) Keep the honking horns coming--its a great background sound on our 1800News :)

Well I haven’t seen any SSR content in a while, let alone a train! I was at Chullora today filming, the entire train is stationary at Chullora Enfield Yard! Anyone who wants to see they are there! (14/04/2024 - 14:00AEST was the last time I saw them!!! Thanks for the video!

Saw them pull in for the night at Benalla on Wednesday while I was waiting for the XPT.
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER3 ай бұрын
Yes they went out to oaklands also.
@Gnrnrvids3 ай бұрын
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER Yeah they came down from the Yarrawonga line and then went away southbound, then reversed back up to Benalla again and parked up. I think GM22 was lead with GM10 immediately behind, then the AK's.

In the future where in Melbourne will double stack trains terminate/depart? I ask because all the inner approaches seem completely incapable of handling the height. What route will they take? Will this occur within a human lifetime? I'm having a crisis, things are happening too fast. We simply aren't a country that 'gets things done.' From idea to completion is usually 150 years. There's at least 100 years of politics to be milked, 5 years of construction before the money runs out, a cost overrun Royal Commission, a criminal trial then another 1/4 of a century of idle time, then the project completed to a tight budget with none of the critical connections being connected. I expect the inland rail link & the Murray Basin rail project to be completed not before 2150 if ever. They'll end up like the Maldon to Dombarton Railway Line won't they? I see a double stacking terminal in Melbourne similarly. Heavens such cynicism.
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER3 ай бұрын
It's definitely happening, major works under way at somerton, and possibly a PN terminal at little River in future. Almost all bridges have been done from somerton onwards, but still a few left before double stacking can start, this will be solely for the Melbourne Brisbane line, (inland rail project.) There's alot of things being improved, it's been a slow process and a one based on date from the current freight movements, the docks have had a semi major overhaul, now trains don't need middle man trucks to move from train to ship so that's a cost saved, there will be trip train from the docks to somerton and lysart near Cranbourne, with another intermodal terminal there built now. It's all in an aim to pull a few trucks out of the cities and leave it to rail and local drivers to deliver.

What is the purpose of riding at the back?
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER3 ай бұрын
To ensure brakes on the rear loco don't sneak on, also can be handy if the rear one is having issues as we are in communication with the lead unit from the rear by radio. The train had to go into southern Cross plat 2, all the way down and straight back out. Nowhere to do 2 loco run around the train, so we went in push pull. Hope that answers that question.

Assuming the AK cars are wired through for push-pull operations, given it looks like your a passenger there?

GM10 is 1952 and GM22 is 1962 yea? For as much as I'm totally loving it I'm baffled on a commercial level that today in 2024 Southern Shorthaul are still using a 70 year old loco. Imagine going to the airport today and climbing aboard a de Havilland Comet or seeing a 1952 Bedford Truck at the BP roadhouse. I'm obviously missing something here. Yea it's a "test train" but surely this is a rolling historical display not an everyday legitimate commercial run yes?
@jd01923 ай бұрын
The AK Cars are almost a waste of any better horsepower. It takes so little effort for the GMs to maintain the cars at 100km/h that a more modern loco is not even that much cheaper. It's a VERY limited locomotive market in Australia, and for a company to replace pretty much anything, it's a upwards of $4 million, and usually $7 mil plus investment. It takes a very, very long time to make a positive ROI with figures like that on trains like these.
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER3 ай бұрын
Pretty much the case, the 2 locos are just insurance really, but at times you have to maintain speed up hills in between trains so the addition of a 2nd unit helps maintain a good average speed. Or to balance fuels, they are shut down overnight in yards along the route and restarted and warmed up while the buys make breakfast on the cars before they head off.
