You might need to change your cassette for any number of reasons; a new set of wheels, a worn cassette, or maybe you're adding some easier gears. Whatever your reason, changing your cassette is a job that you can definitely do at home with the help of just two specific tools - a chain whip and a cassette tool.

Best description for proper use of the chain whip ever! I should adopt it for future cassette changes. Yes, very convenient that my SRAM GX 10-52 cassettes are only one piece.

Great video, thank you. I didnt realise that the tool for wrenching on it is actually to undo the ring at the very top of the cassette - I had thought that it was for a nut I had in the center.

Hey Anna, I had a question regarding the gouging many report on the shimano HG freehub body. Is it just lack of care or is it that the hub design is just not capable of taking higher torque/impacts?
@yarkmates3409

Quick question @GMBN , at 6:05 you can see the cassette disassembled, the smaller cogs removed showing the remaining block. I have the same XTR cassette, appears to have a broken rivet holding the 8th gear cog in place on the cassette block on, is this normal or do I have a chance with a warranty claim ?

Not all Sunrace cassettes though! They also produce cassettes with 10 teeth cogs, which won't fit on HG freehub bodies.

#AskGMBNTech Hey Anna, Doddy, I've been schooling myself for a year or two now on all things MTB maintenance, building custom wheels, suspension is on my short list. Your video's are such a help and inspiration to just tackle stuff, which I really appreciate. I've seen your rear derailleur vid and I for the life of me, cannot get the clutch axle to come out those 12s derailleurs which have seen some daunting weather here in Belgium over the winter. I believe it's a matter of applying the required mallet pressure on it, but I'm a little reluctant to breaking stuff.. Any tips are appreciated.

All videos explain well. But NO ONE explains how to remove stuck threads. Which is what you see every day. Nobody changes newly installed and loose spare parts. We change when we have to change, and they are practically welded together.

Glad you found this useful! If you're interested in building up your MTB toolbox, we use tools from Park Tool; however, other brands are available. Normally you'll find that cassettes are torqued to around 40Nm. Although it's worth checking the locking wheel ring.👍

#AskGMBNTech Hey Anna, hey Doddy! Mountainbike tires are getting harder and harder to mount on rims. Last time was the first time i had to go to a shop and ask the guys there to mount my tires. I‘m riding michelin wild enduro race lines and bontrager elite carbon wheels and couldn‘t get the tires on the rim. Actually really hurt both of my thumbs badly when trying to fit the tires. How the hell do you fit tires without hurting yourself? Special tools? Cheers 🤙

Question: how would you know if your shifter cable is too tight, too lose or just right? Do you have a tool to measure the slack?
@Tom-jj6jo
@Tom-jj6jo 6 ай бұрын
im not sure if theres a tool for it, but you can kind of measure it by shifting gears. if the chain doesnt shift all the way and the chain is ticking after shifting, is too loose. if it skips a sprocket and shifts up 2 gears in one click, the cable is too tight. gmbn tech also made a vid about adjusting your rear mech explaining all this. the best one i found is a vid by parktool on adjusting the rear mech. hope it helps(after a year xd)
@cstrike105
@cstrike105 6 ай бұрын
@@Tom-jj6jo Yes, indexing the gears involves a lot of practice. Once you know the technique. It would be easy as long as you install good parts as well as have a well maintained sprocket, chain and chainring.

Would it be nice if U did not have to replace the entire cassette all the time. I use the 3 high gears 80% of the time. If I replace the chain on time it would be cheaper if I could only replace the 3 high gears every other time.
