With a name more commonly associated with road cycling, it may come as a surprise to see Zipp release a pair of mountain bike wheels. Their pursuit of speed and aerodynamics has put them at the front of road bike wheel technology, and these MTB wheels follow in a similar innovative vein, featuring a single wall design heavily influenced by motocross bikes, hence the name. 3Zero Moto.

The GMBN Shop: gmbn.tech/fA
The rims, made from Uni-stitch carbon weave, use an asymmetrical construction to offer the strongest wheel build possible; the single wall design allows the rim to deform around big impacts. Zipp says that this Ankle Compliance technology, should increase traction and smooth out rough terrain, whilst allowing lower tyre pressures and reducing rider fatigue. Lateral stiffness was not forgotten, remaining an important factor in Zipp's brief as of course, you'll still want to smash some turns!

I guess its bring carbon wheels up towards the performance of top end alloy wheels... addressing one of their main issues, harshness. Given quality high end alloy wheels can have the same lateral stiffness and better compliance, for less money AND the same or even lower weight (carbon wheels weigh more than equivalent alloys), and can take a ding, not sure what the usp is, except for bling factor. Seems like 'reinventing the wheel'...literally! Hopefully it is tech that helps inform other areas where it is worthwhile

Doubt it...alloy rims have 'ankle flex' (I.e. verticle compliance) fir decades...so still need a cushcore etc if u need one now...except the tyrewizz will get u to pump up your tyres to prevent bottoming...
@tbenallie
@tbenallie 5 жыл бұрын
@@rupedog I was just curious if the ankle flex plus the rim flexing 5:43 was something that would have an affect on the punctures like the ENVE M-series pinch flat resistant rims. I know they'll never completely illuminate the use of tire inserts but it looks like they might reduce it in a similar way to the ENVE rims.
@tbenallie
@tbenallie 5 жыл бұрын
But ya the tyrewizz would be a cool way to tinker with your pressure so's you could find an ideal balance of traction vs rim/tire protection. I tend to run higher pressures because I destroy sidewalls if I don't
@gmbntech
@gmbntech 5 жыл бұрын
@mhmm Tyre inserts can be beneficial for many reasons and this is a great question we can ask Zipp. The "Ankle Flex" is the ability to for the rim to roll slightly as opposed to just up and down vertical compliance and Rupert is right that the TyreWiz is a great way to optimise pressures with digital feedback.
@rupedog
@rupedog 5 жыл бұрын
@@tbenallie I suggest getting a rim protection insert then, and drop ur pressures. I dont go too.low as I dont like squirm...but 26 front 28 rear @ 90kg ride weight so far ok. +2psi for park or if I was somewhere v rocky. Seems ok to me, not sure tyrewiz will benefit anyone bar pro's, and 10g on your wheel is significant rotating mass, (thats car wheel balancing weight) esp with valve on top, if ur going fast only of course, but wouldn't leave one on... the shockwiz tho...different story...that really can help your avg rider make significant set-up gains...if the users reads the manual...seen pro online reviews and most of them get it wrong and make incorrect use assumptions = non-optimum set up! Points of engagement have NOTHING to do with the quality of the hub. It's just a feature. Too many points of engagement will cause your 20000 EUR suspension to work like shit. It's very much depends on the conditions out on the trails, riding style, rider weight and a bit of personal preference. Softer pressures offer more grip but can squirm in corners or even burp off the rim. Harder pressures roll faster but increase rider fatigue and offer less grip. A good quality pressure gauge and experimentation out on the trails is a great way to find out what works for you. The Shockwiz offers the most detailed look at tyre pressures when out on the trails and can help recommend settings.

@@gmbntech u mean tyrewiz? Must add, to not propagate the myth...Harder tyres only roll faster on hard smooth surfaces, tarmac, smooth dirt, etc...trails with small bumps (roots, rocks etc), I.e. off road chunder, harder tyres roll slower as tyre is 'micro-chocked'... it has an opposite force created from the impact which slows it (aside from loosing control as it bounces off, causing rider to slow) This 'chock' effect is lower where the tyre can deform around the rock etc due to being softer.

Charging a premium for these is removing the whole purpose of why moto wheels are single wall to begin with....thus making it mostly marketing hype! Moto wheels are single wall aluminum simply because of cost/strength/width reasons. The purpose of the double wall was a lighter rim that's torsionally stiffer, but the risk was always pullout of eyelits since you've halved the thickness into two sections...hence newer designs have riveted eyelits or extra material. Single wall creates softer wheels in radial compression (less cracked rims) and beefs eye lits without extra production steps at the expense of heavier rims. It's also a lot cheaper to produce single wall because the extrusion is simplified for aluminum rims, and the hand layup is simplified for carbon rims not needing the internal bladder. I suspect these will sell well with the weekend warriors who don't see past marketing, but it's a hard pass for me.
@bradillingworth
@bradillingworth 5 жыл бұрын
These aren't designed for moto and they're not punted as economical. It's a premium wheelset designed for performance mountain biking. In alloy, this design wouldn't last very long on a mountain bike that's ridden aggressively with low (grip providing) pressure. Dirt bike tyres are also far tougher and you have ample torque to cope with the weight. On a (normal) mountain bike, tyre weight needs to be kept to minimum and therefore as system, the performance requirements of the rim are altogether different. If you ran alloy rims of a similar design with currently available tyres, at 'suitable' pressures, it won't be long before those alloy rims are trashed.

These wheels look fantastic and I can understand how much time,design and cost has been spent but surly this company needs to understand that they are selling a set of wheels for same price as,say a six month old Whyte G170 bike!!!! Or a six month old Trek Remedy 8!! This sport is out pricing itself through greed! More people are taking part yet the cost is going up for everything!!!

There aren’t any options significantly lighter than that in the aggressive trail/enduro category, especially if these can replace tire liners that are needed in other rims. We’re not talking about xc wheels here...

@@katietrotter9374 Stans no tubes are super light, and at a similar price, Katie. DT Swiss also do a super light carbon. Admittedly neither of those have this new flex feature, which will make these popular with people who do hard/ fast rocky riding. I'm just a trail rider, so that feature has far less value for me.

Phil R a Stan’s flow mk3 wheelset in 29” weighs 1905 grams. Basically the same weight as the zipp Moto. You can’t compare zipps enduro wheel to Stan’s and DT Swiss’s xc and trail wheels. 1900 grams is about what’s expected for tough enduro wheels, regardless of material.

That kind of money puts me away. Where I live, it's almost a year of minimun wage only for the rims. The life warranty is a plus. The pace where new boost, boost+, superboost and other things boost, kind of moves the lifetime warranty from the rims itself. So for me, only in dreams. Or if anyone could send a pair.... And a bike that fits, I will ride the crap out of it!

@@gmbntech yes, thats a fair appraisal/way to put it. lighter than some carbon enduro rated wheels, but same or slightly heavier than many similar spec (top end) alloys. They look sexy tho, and great they have got the compliance now to get closer to good alloy wheels... but I am missing the usp over a pair of £700-1000 alloys...like dt's or Hunts (MBR Feb 19 test winner v carbon and high end alloy), and British made💪👏👏👏

But the race is also over if you break an alloy rim. Every time I read discussions about durability of certain materials, I'm reminded that the only bike frame I ever broke was made of steel. On the other hand, I still made it home with that frame ;-)

They are mostly not lighter...top end alloy wheels are often the same or some lighter... a myth carbon wheels are all much lighter, comparing like for like...check out MBR Feb 2019 wheel test, v much same...the dt swiss alloys were lightest on test.. plus perseonally my race face turbine R alloy wheel set is lighter than the race face next carbon wheelset, both on same hubs, but cost under £900, half that of the Next wheels. Both enduro rated. Carbon wheels have to be material intense to be suitable for wheel use without impact fracturing in 'normal use', so they save no real weight...and (until now) gain harshness. Carbon main frame yes, wheels alloy tho

Hi Tom, In cycling in general we see a wide range of spoke patterns from 4 cross down to 0 cross (though this is only really ever seen in Track and Road bikes with rim or no brakes). We will do a video about spoke patterns and lacing at some point so this should help explain a bit about the pros and cons of different spoke configurations. MX wheels have a large hubs, larger spokes and a smaller rim diameter compared to mountain bikes or bicycles in general. When this is the case it's best practice to build with less spoke crosses to avoid stressing the spokes in key areas such as the nipple and hub flange. It's also not practical to build a MX wheel with more crosses due to the limited flex in the spoke.
@tom6493
@tom6493 5 жыл бұрын
GMBN Tech firstly, I build wheels as part of my love for all things two wheels (mtb, bmx, mx etc) and have built them for all disciplines, therefore I’m fully aware of the multitude of lacing patterns. Secondly it seems you have completely missed the point about my comment, it’s quite clear it’s a 3X pattern which is pretty much the standard, as it gives flexibility as well as good torsional rigidity for its weight (for the extra weight of 4X, you don’t gain much strength). What I’m referring to is on the 3rd X, the outer spoke is laced ‘under’ the inner spoke. This is wrong for two reasons, 1. Spokes work in one direction and in tension only from nipple to hub (this is why straight pull rather than ‘J’ bend spokes are preferred but hubs are more costly to manufacture) when the spokes are bent round each other a lateral load is placed on them, which will require more tension as the spoke is now fighting to straighten itself. This can result in premature failure. Lateral stiffness is only achieved by decreasing the angles of the spokes with wider flanges etc. 2. As is obvious from 1. It causes the spokes to touch and as the wheel flexes, they will rub which causes wear, which causes (again) premature failure. Motorcycle wheels are not built like this, not because the hubs, spokes and rims are bigger (trust me, I’ve seen people interlace motorcycle wheels, it’s not nice) they’re built that way because maths and engineering dictate that. If you don’t believe me, maybe you should ask Mavic, as ALL factory built Mavic wheels are built correctly. The only reason for interlacing is for speed of building, nothing else (it’s self supporting so the rim can be offered up to the spokes). Lastly, if this is Doddy I’m replying to, you’re not the all-knowing font of cycle knowledge you’d have this generation believe, I remember when you were doing articles in MBUK about how to wear a belt buckle 😂
