At the very end, of you listen closely, you can here a stuttered, tear-filled breath.

This song tears me up (tears as in rips) AND as in drops as far as that goes. For my own personal life, hers and the lyrics themselves. How very authentic to bare the soul in front of the world with this. What a song!! Def one of the most poignant things I've ever heard.

In honor of their mother and the pain of her breakup with the husband that left her for another. she also died of cancer in 2010 at 63.

Kate (who did die of cancer in 2010) is the songwriter, writing about her own breakup with Loudon Wainwright. Anna is her sister, and they recorded this song together, as well as many others. Kate's children, Martha and Rufus, are both musicians as well, but as far as I know they've never recorded this song.

On a website, Kate's daughter Martha Wainwright said this song was about her father cheating. Martha listened to this song as a child and has said that you can hear her mother's teardrop fall on the guitar near the end.

such a deep and heartfelt song, very few this intimate and powerful (the original sang by Kate herself) though the daughters do a great job .

Yep, teardrop at 3:05.

Life is complicated and there's two sides to every story. Having said that...how could you cheat on a sweet, wonderful McGarrigle sister? You gotta admit, Loudon, that to the outside world it 'stinks to high heaven.'

Loudon Wainwright III was, and is, a self-centered, childish, egotistical piece of garbage who was never talented enough to pull off his love-em-and-leave-em rockstar shit. His lousy behavior is slightly mitigated by his having been a sperm donor for three amazing musicians that he didn't stick around to raise.

@@peterkuchenbrod5696 No. Sometimes there just aren't two sides. A "man" who doesn't bother to raise any of this children is a piece of garbage. Knowing, from his marriage to Kate, that he couldn't be counted on to be responsible, he should never have had more children.

Amazing. Listening to this from the newly uploaded compilation (by Anna it seems) . Sound does seem cleaner than some of the ones that have been around for many years. (Listened to them all over and over again ( :) ). Has not been a better 'group' imo before or since.

F’in Loudon… what were you thinking? To leave Kate and 2 young kids… and for Penny Arcade?

Lovely voice - sounds a bit like Joan Baez.

Yeah, infidelity by a man you trusted enough to have children with has never been that big a deal. Kids growing up without their father-- no worse than a hangnail.

I agree. The saddest song that always tears me up whenever I hear it is "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast." by Wayne Newton. Second runner up is "Old Shep" by Walter Brennan.
