For the last couple of months I have been using this fantastic series of exercises as my go-to strength workout when I've been pushed for time, or when the weather has been too bad to exercise outside. Check out my Strength Training Workout Logbook: payhip.com/b/AraNS

Brilliant John. Wondering why you omitted a vertical pull movement? Just practicalities? The one you suggest in your book has worked out really well for me while I rehab a chronic Golfers elbow condition.

Thanks Philip 🙏🏼. The vert pull is a key movement and can be added in. I have installed a chin-up bar at my house so I have the vert pull covered 👍 Thanks for supporting my work and purchasing my book. I hope your elbow gets better soon.

Cheers John, this was a really great work and I would love to understand your look on what training you can do to be quicker and not slow down, as it feels intuitive that doing plyometrics, functional training and other similar training would make you quicker at your sport etc. But after listening to steve maxwell, Drew baye and others it appears maybe not as well as moving around injuries but I would just like to know your account for this like Steve saying we cannot selectively recruit fast twitch muscle fibres and pavel saying we need to lift heavy and move fast in order to keep these in our old age as we need them to respond quickly and almost instantly to reduce risk of injury when falling over etc. Pavel said this on the joe rogan podcast referring to mitochondria as well and Steve has said what he said on quite a few podcasts or interviews.

Hi Samuel, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Some really good questions there, the answers are long and the space here is too short to do them justice. It is worth noting that engaging in sport is not necessarily healthy - there is often an acceptance/expectation of risk, whereas exercise should always be safe.

Pavel himself has had multiple surgeries and has elbow issues. There are not many (if any) above the age of 70 that can practice his programs, just something to think about. Try teaching a 70 year old lady to do 1-arm swings with as low as 12 kgs and maybe som box jumps and see how that works out(don't actually do this lol). I'm with Steve on this one.

It is a heavy duty furniture removal strap that has loops at specific intervals. Before I had this I used (and still do) a roof rack tie down strap with an adjustable buckle.

@@johnmetcalfecoaching yes it does. i do basically the same workout but do an underhand grip row at one and a chin up at the other, so the emphasis is slightly different. that was the point i wanted to make, because only doing rows just does not cover the whole back right?

John, Steve and Drew Baye are at the forefront of this high-intensity bodyweight training style. I learn from all three. I guess it could be argued that every single 5x5 programme out there is inspired by Reg Park.
