That’s where I am right now. My goal is to figure out how to pass the guard and not let people keep lifting my entire body off the ground.

Thanks Robin. I really needed to hear this. Thanks for the motivation. The gold is always found where the dragons are. “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure that you seek” -Joseph Campbell

Yes! My goal is typically to not get submitted as fast as I did yesterday, last week, last month etc. I went into jiu jitsu with the mindset that I was going to be terrible, just completely green, never practiced any martial art of any kind in my life up until that point. I knew it was gonna be hard, taxing on my body, but I needed to stick with it. And I honestly think that helped me a lot, just going into it completely open minded. After all it's a marathon and not a sprint!

Thank you for the refreshing perspective, Professor. As someone the same age with many other obligations in life, this angle of viewing progress is exactly what I needed to hear.

Really heartening to listen to someone with this much experience talking about exactly the things I've been thinking about since I started learning BJJ in the past few months at 34 years of age. Balancing survival, technique and efficiency feels like a really great way to approach learning BJJ and it's definitely something I'll be keeping in mind as I learn more.

This is great. Too much internet BJJ stuff, which then goes on to influence real people in real gyms, is about how world champions train, and having a world champion mind set, and going one million per cent and never taking a backward step, etc, etc. But most people who train BJJ are ill-served by a world champions mind set, unless they just want to have a brief love affair with it. For a longer term love affair with Jiu jitsu, we need to hear more views like this one. Thank you for sharing

For me a reason why I want to reach to Black Belt is because I want to feel like I have achieved something in my life. When I got promoted to Blue Belt, even though I was so eager to get it, I felt that I was hungry for more in this game
