And it comes directly after other church goers prayed for wealth, fame and glory. At least the woman asking for love didn't come across as a greedy narcissist - anybody who isn't a psychopath wants love, even if some may not consciously realise it, and it's a perfectly reasonable thing to pray for - but she was still asking God to do something specifically for her. Esmeralda didn't ask God - who she might not even fully believe in since she said at the beginning of the song that she didn't know if He was there at all - to give her anything, not even something as pure as love. Her focus was totally on other people. Esmeralda is an absolute saint. People like her are incredibly rare.

I'm a hardcore agnostic and leftist, but I always appreciated sincere spirituality, being raised by two catholic parents who are just not blind followers but conscious and good religious people who gave me a good example of what true spirituality can be. I love the symbolism as she walks away from the shadows of everyone greed. She's the only one in that church that isn't asking for personal gain, she only wants the safety and happiness of who she considers her family and loved ones. This character, as well as this film, are criminally underrated.

I think a point not to be missed is that the other people in their prayers look a bit more desperate and wretched than she does. Also, they are dressed like what wealthy people would be dressed like in the medieval era

Liza Kirchyunger I believe there was once a time that she was officially included in the Disney Princess line-up. But the reason that she got eliminated was that she was a bit "sexualized" in the "Hunchback" movie, and the movie was rather dark and it focuses on rather scary, serious and mature themes, so Disney stopped including her in their "Princess" franchise, because I guess they felt she was too "adult".

Because when they did, it was the RELIGIOUS people who got mad. Christians boycotted this movie. If people of faith are angry that Disney won't touch religion anymore, they have only themselves to blame for that.

@@vintagearisen I'm a Christian and watched this movie for the first time ever a few months ago, and it's honestly one of if not my favorite Disney movie now because of how mature it is and also how it almost feel Christian. I haven't read the book the movie is based on, but the movie itself blew me away. While it is drug down by what almost feels like corporate interference to preserve an image(The garogyles), when this movie chooses to delve into mature topics like Christianity or Frollo's entire character, it excells. If anything, it surprised me how respectful this movie was to Christianity even though its villain is a completely opposite representation of what a Christian should be. While I myself am not Catholic, the Arch Deacon clearly shows what a Christian(or in this case, a Catholic specifically) should be like as a contrast to Frollo. Even in the climax, he tells off Frollo for his assuault on the house of God! If this type of movie was made now, I feel like that type of character wouldn't exist and the message would just be "Oh Christianity is bad," which is unfortunately what a lot of out of touch Christian adults thought based on your comment(I wasn't alive when this movie released, so I'm taking your word for it). It's sad to me as a Christian that movies that are Christian or touch on Christianity in respectful and mature ways like Hunchback here get frowned upon, mostly because a couple of older pastors or something see anything other than what they're used to as evil or a terrible representation of Christianity. And while there are terrible representations of Christianity EVERYWHERE in media now, not every piece of media that mentions or shows it is doing it with malicious intent and that fact is sadly overlooked. Because so many companies do do an awful job at representing Christianity or just make it a mockery in their media, it does leave a lot of Christians including myself apprehensive about seeing things that aren't techically Christian(Like Hunchback) tackle Christainity because we've grown to expect the worse. I do my best to keep an open mind, however, and encourage this type of thing. Hunchback is special to me for several reasons, and again, its exploration of Christianity is one of them. Had this movie been marketed as what it truly was and not just "The Feast of Fools," then maybe people would have not been taken so aback and actually watched it and not immediately seen it as an attack on Christianity because the movie was promised to be much more lighthearted than it actually was. If anything, typing this essay of a comment makes me wanna create my own Christian media more than I already wanted to, whatever form it'll come in. At the end of the day, I'd be happy actually to see Disney make more movies touching upon Christianity. The only issue is that in this day and age, someone in the pipeline would probably try and misrepresent it and kill whatever good intentions existed. Only the future will tell.

To be fair, no other Disney song has as much meaning as this one. What came before it? Someday my prince will come, a dre is a wish your heart makes, once upon a dream, part of your world, a whole new world, beauty and the beast, hakuna matata? Colors of the wind is closest. Those songs are all wonderful but none of Disney, renaissance, silver age, new age, or any of it, can measure to the complexity and deepness of this movie's music and message, specifically this song, in my opinion.

Sweets, speak for yourself. I believe different songs hit different people that have gone through different situations in different ways. A person who has always wanted adventure and to pursue their dreams but are held back due to their responsibilities and not wanting to disappoint their loved ones may really connect to 'How far I'll go' no matter how many times it's played while someone who has always been considered an outcast (be it by religion, race, social class etc) may find themselves bonded to 'God help the outcasts'. It's not right to call another song redundant just cause it doesn't speak to you the same way it does to others.

Well i listen to moana's how far I'll go over and over again and i still feel the emotion. Disney songs are good, old or new.

'Colors of the Wind' is an absolutely beautiful and timeless song with so much emotion and deep meaning. 'Savages' is another good song from the same movie. 'Part of your world' is a great song. It's not just limited to wanting to be with a man but to want to change the course of your destiny and trying to be a part of a world different to yours. 'Circle of Life' is an absolutely amazing song and so is 'We are one' from the sequel of the Lion King. Mulan's 'I'll make a man out of you' is instrumental in showcasing how you do not have to be a man to be worthy of the privilege of protecting your land and people. You might love this song more than the others but that does not mean that they are in anyway less beautiful or meaningful than this one.

I just said IN MY OPINION (I am speaking for myself), no other one is as meaningful as this because of its MESSAGE. Which is why I said colors of the wind is also up there in most meaningful because both songs have a theme about caring about other people. All the "I want" songs are focused on what the character wants for themselves (which is fine) and the side characters's songs, while wonderfully composed and super fun to sing and dance too, do not have the same emotion or "caring about others" message. Mulan wants people to see her for who she is, ariel wants to be a part of the human world, belle wants adventure, Hercules wants to prove himself, moana wants to sail the ocean, and what does esmeralda want? For the persecution of the poor and downtrodden to stop. What's the message behind "under the sea" or hakuna matata? They're masterfully crafted song that I know all the words to and will sing at any moment because I love every song I've mentioned and more, I just think the MESSAGE in this one is the most meaningful IN MY OPINION, with colors of the wind being second (and colors of the wind isn't even my favorite pocahontas song, it's "just around the riverbend" with "savage"s being second, but colors of the wind is the most MEANINGFUL) Everybody out here thinking I hate all other Disney songs or that I dont think anyone else can have a different favorite🤦‍♀️

+Antona Bowen My grandparents Hate my mother. There highly Christian and my mom believes in more of a freedome\spiritual religion. Because of this they see me as an outcast in the family, it doesn't help that I was born out of wedlock and my parents are split up. Because of all the hate I get from my family I get violent easily. One night at dinner my Grandma and my aunt were talking about how gay people should go to hell and all that. I stayed calm and asked them if they wouldn't talk about people like that. My world crumbled when my Grandma called my a (Half-breed Basterd) and ordered me to go to bed without dinner. I lost my temper and hit her. Hard! I then grabbed my overnight bag and ran out the front door. There house is 4½ miles away from mine. I walked home, in the dark with the biggest grin on my face. Since then I keep away from them. They can believe whatever they want to believe, That doesn't mean they can try confirming me into religion or call me names.

Eh. This movie has some tone problems. It goes back and forth between dark, deep, broody scenes and Jason Alexander making fart jokes at the drop of a hat. The filmmakers wanted it to be dark and serious but Disney wanted something lighter that was easy to advertise and merchandise, so the result is a bit muddled in places. Part of the reason it performed so poorly upon release is that most of the previews made it look fun and lighthearted, and audiences were very surprised at how dark it turned out to be. I definitely think it's underrated, but people who praise it as the best Disney film ever tend to forget about certain aspects of it. Ultimately I would say it has some of the strongest scenes in all of Disney but is ultimately unable to pull together into a strong cohesive while.

The problem is they couldn’t decide what kinda movie they wanted to make. They had deep and meaningful scenes, but then the gargoyles or whatever were just ridiculous and ruined the movie in a similar way to how Jar Jar ruined the first Star Wars movie 😂 lol

I dressed as her for Halloween after seeing this movie when it came out. I always loved gypsies and thought this woman was a wonderful character, so strong & full of life & love.

Average Joe my church will occasionally let congregation members perform musical pieces...with a few paraphrases ("I ask for wealth" to "Some ask for wealth", and "my people" to "the people") I could sing it as a solo perhaps. Only problem is that she goes right to the bottom of my vocal range.

Various males and females differ from each other in various characteristics including sexuality which is the most important of all. And there's also trans people. I think the male and female genders should be expanded with sub categories. Also, there should be a solution found about trans people who are neither male nor female.

Still, even bisexuals usually seem to identify themselves by the gender of their body. This whole "boys and girls don't exist" mentality seems more like a political rather than a scientific approach.

I can relate to this, when I was little I was a lot more faithful than I am now, and while I can't say I am a Christian, I do still believe in their beliefs. I believe that God exists, but I don't worship him per say. I merely acknowledge that they exist, I am neither religious nor atheist, but I do still harbor some faith.
